ā pope and angel have been best friends since third grade. the two have been through a lot together and somehow managed to stay best friends since. angel is pretty close with the rest of the pogueās, but pope will always be day 1.
he was angelās first kiss, he taught her how to drive, his family is hers. the only issue is unspoken feelings.
pope knew he had feelings for angel since freshman year. the night she explained how she was the only girl in the ninth grade who had never had their first kiss. angel told him she didnāt know how to kiss, and she was terrified of āleaving a bad kissing impression,ā her words exactly. he simply stated that he didnāt know either and suggested they learned together.
angel thought it to be hilarious, but pope just prayed that it didnāt make anything weird. the two kissed for 10 seconds before angel broke out into a laughing fit, saying kissing was so weird. pope just sat there, mortified because it made him realize something new. they never spoke of it again.
now, two years later, pope still feels the same since the day angel let him be her first kiss. since then, sheād kissed one person and immediately told pope of how terrible of a kisser the guy was. it only boosted popeās ego more, considering he was the only person sheād ever kissed.
so sitting at this boneyard party, watching angel chew on the rim of her solo cup and giggle at the guy in front of her only made pope want to vomit. guys always flirt with angel, including jj. it was only casual flirting, and she never fed into it. pope was used to it; he knew angel didnāt see jj that way. with random guys, he never knows her feelings about them, but he can tell by the way she looks grossed out and calls the guy a douche.
the dude in front of her is obviously a different story, heās saying all the right things and looking just the way angel likes. heās tall, dark, and pretty. not handsome, pretty. which irritated pope even more. pope is handsome, heās been told by angel herself multiple times, but he isnāt pretty.
pope watches as she lightly places her hand on his bare shoulder, gives it a little shove, and walks off, toward pope himself. he quickly turned to the side, pretending to be occupied with anything else but the sight of angel flirting with this guy.
āpope, you will not believe.ā she smiles, hopping up on the huge branch pope is sitting on, right next to him.
āyou see that guy, righttt there?ā she points to the guy who is now talking to kook who looks a foot shorter than him, making sure pope sees the right guy.
āthe tall one?ā he looks away, his blood slightly boiling.
āyes! i just had such a good conversation with him. we talked about the ocean, and school, even though itās summer, and heās really smart.ā
pope just nodded, not wanting her to continue, but also not knowing how to respond to that.
āi think heās perfect,ā angel sighs, just staring at the guy.
āstop staring, heāll think youāre a freak.ā
āyouāre right.ā her head shoots to the side, now looking at pope. āhe asked if he could kiss me.ā angel giggles.
āno.ā she said, sounding almost offended.
āoh. how come?ā the corner of his mouth goes up, but he looks away, trying to keep it in.
ābecause a kiss is important, and he was moving too fast.ā angel takes a sip of her drink, feeling awkward.
āyeah,ā pope gets up, grabbing angelās knee lightly. āimma go talk to jj real quick, alright?ā
āmhm,ā she nods, watching pope walk off to jj, whoās talking to another blonde.
she continues to watch as pope whispers something to jj, he nods, they do the pogue handshake and pope walks back over.
āhey, i need to wring it out. can you come with?ā pope says. angel wants to laugh but holds it in. she hops down off the branch, feeling popes hand on her back to hold her steady.
ādo you need me to hold it for you?ā she walks with him anyways.
āyou sound like kie, and no, itās just dark over there and i donāt want to go on my own.ā he looks back as they walk to the bushes by the water. itās behind a good amount of trees so most people come here to piss or do other things.
āaw, youāre scared. thatās cute.ā
āiām not scared. jj has almost got jumped by a girl for going piss over here by himself.ā
angel laughs. āalmost getting attack by a girl is cr-ā
pope cuts her off. ānot in that way.ā
they make it to the area, and angel checks for any couples doing things but itās clear tonight. she turns around so pope can do his thing.
āguess no one is in the mood today,ā she giggles to herself.
āmaybe because itās a monday,ā pope says.
āuh, what?ā she can hear pope zip his shorts.
āokay,ā he says, and she turns around. the two sit on the sand by the water.
āboys are so lucky,ā angel sighs.
āwhy?ā pope sips from angelās cup, looking to the left where everyone is out on the boneyard.
ābecause like you can just casually whip it out and piss whenever or wherever. i need to piss so bad almost every time we have these parties, and i canāt just go pee wherever.ā
āi mean, you kinda can.ā
āiām not popping a squat in a bush, especially not when i could get poison ivy,ā she shudders. āthat idea just made me cringe, gross.ā
āof the poison ivy?ā pope pauses, like heās thinking about it, and then shudders. āyeah, no.ā
the two talk a little more before heading back with their friends. when they get to them, pope and jj whisper to each other, and angel pretends not to see before she gets too curious.
