Fic Recs: All-time Favorites

I’ve been meaning to put together several fic recs because there are so many amazing writers out there. I started reading voraciously since end of November 2019, getting completely re-immersed into Harry Potter fanfiction, especially Harry/Ginny (which will make up about 99% of my recs). I haven’t read everything, but by god, I’ve read a lot and am excited to share some amazing stories. There are too many stories to rec in one post, so here are some of my all-time favorites!

Anything with an * is a WIP.

All right, be prepared to have your mind blow ten thousand ways. The Changeling and the Armistice Series are the pinnacle to fanfiction in my humble opinion. The themes. The themes. The nuance, the character develop, the exploration of the houses, events and circumstances that shape us but keep the core of us the same, the slowest of all slow burns, the absolutely magnetic attraction between Harry and Ginny, learning to accept who you are, feminism, house unity, realistic post-war politics and ramifications, everything that could have been in one amazing package. If I had one story (I’m counting all of these as one – bite me) with me on an island, this would be it. I could read it forever and ever, and still learn, laugh, and cry. Please read this and realize that Ginny should have been sorted to Slytherin and the epicness that would have ensued.

Okay, if I had to choose any writer whose writing reminds me the most of canon, whose writing makes me feel in my bones that I’m reading more of the actual series, who has completely spot-on characterizations, who expands my mind what these characters could have been feeling beyond the canon narrative, this is it. Flo has made me laugh, cry, feel all the feels, and desperately wish for more of the canon world, particularly Hinny.

I love her longer series, such as Not from Others, and still need to read the rest of her amazing work (it’s too good to read all at once, and better to spread out as wonderful gifts over time), but it’s really those stolen, happy, pining, angsty, loving moments of Harry and Ginny during Ootp, HBP, DH, and then post-DH that get me.

There are far, far too many to rec, so really just read everything, but my absolute, absolute favorites include:

Missing HBP moment – Harry trapped in a cupboard with Ginny for the first time

Missing HBP moment - Harry falls asleep being held

Realising – Harry realizes he loves Ginny 

Safe – where Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he broke up with Ginny

Missing DH moment - Ron interrupts the kiss

Missing DH moment - Harry thinks about what could have happened with Ginny 

Missing DH moment - Harry stares at Ginny’s dot

Drunk in Love – because who doesn’t love drunk!Harry?

Quizards on the Run – who doesn’t like a good pub trivia?

Aunt Marge’s Even Bigger Mistake – yes, yes, because Ginny is the best

An accident at work left Harry with a mysterious case of amnesia and a wife he couldn’t remember.

I have read this story so, so many times, and I still get emotional every time. Amnesia is one of my favorite tropes, but it’s very difficult to get just right in my opinion. Annerb works her magic once again, even managing to make Harry jealous of himself (an absolute favorite trope of mine).

Read it. Read it again. Read it always. I’m writing my own amnesia fic that was inspired by this one and Annerb’s pontificating on what if Ginny were the one with amnesia. Hope it can hold a candle to this gem.

Ginny picks a rose, and her world spins out of control.

I read this over ten years ago, when it was originally posted on LJ. It stayed with me all these years, and I was overjoyed to find it again. It fits the amnesia trope, but not in a conventional way. I love Ginny’s struggles with this, her loneliness, the exploration of the point of life, and the aching loneliness of missing someone who is right beside her.

All right, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and I also have way, way too many stories to rec that I can’t possibly fit them all in one post, but these are some of the stories I have reread too many times to count, and my love for them never, ever fades. That’s not to say I don’t absolutely love many more fics, but these hold a special place in my heart.

I’ll be breaking out the rest in additional future posts in which I group them by things like tropes (amnesia, friends with benefits, coffeeshop AU, muggle AU). Because I’m a weirdo and am overthinking this even though no one cares about my categorizations.

I never really came across Muggle AUs and Coffeeshop AUs until this year, and MAN I was missing out in life. Most Coffeeshop AUs also happen to be Muggle AUs, but not all, so I’ve decided to combine them in this post.

Muggle AU

College, Muggle AU: Harry suddenly realizes Ginny is pretty. Fuck. This is one of my all-time favorite Muggle AUs! Harry’s epiphany is so hilarious, as is his fear that Ron will find out. I simply love Harry in this story. He feels so like the pining, angsty Harry I love, even when he’s a Muggle.

College, Roommate, Muggle AU: Ohhh, I just love this story! Recently injured football player Ginny goes to visit her brothers’ campus as she scopes out potential universities to attend. Given the lack of available beds, Ron gives up his room so Ginny ends up rooming with his best mate, Harry for the weekend. This captures the essence of the Harry and Ginny I love, the way they can’t help but be drawn to each other, and the ticks they need to choose whether or not to overcome.

Muggle AU: Harry has been reliving the same day over and over. What happens when he seems to meet someone in the same predicament? Full of beautiful angsty clues. It’s like a wonderful puzzle you’re trying to piece together.

Muggle AU, oh no one bed: Harry’s flight is cancelled and he needs to find a place to stay. This is an absolute delight! One of my favorites of the wonderful fightfortherightofhouseelves. It’s funny, sexy, and all sorts of fun.

Muggle AU, Meet Cute: Harry and Ginny are on a blind date. Just, you know, not with each other. It’s adorable, it’s funny, it’s full of fluff. I laughed, I sighed, I swooned. When I was down because of it pandemic, this was the perfect COVID pick-me-up.

Roommate, Muggle AU: Usually Muggle AU/roommate stories are fun and on the lighter side. Not this one! Harry is a freedom fighter against the evil Tom Riddle’s uprising group. Due to a botched mission, Harry winds up needing to hide out with his best partner’s little sister, who reminds him some things are worth fighting for. Very impressive world building and intensity all around.

Muggle AU, Unplanned Pregnancy: Ginny and Harry need to be a bit more careful when they hook up with fit strangers. I’m really not usually one for unplanned pregnancy, but Brightly Bound writes so beautifully, I was not only on board, but craving more and more.

Muggle AU, Meet Cute: This was the first story I wrote in 10+ years away that I felt good enough to post, in case you’re interested. Harry sends a DM to his celebrity crush about egging and tee-peeing his ex’s house. He never thought she would show up with economy toilet paper rolls and three dozen eggs.

Muggle AU, Coffeeshop AU, College: Ginny the barista in America, Harry the bloke who keeps coming back for…reasons. Don’t know what to say without giving things away, but I simply adore the things Annerb makes me feel with so few words. I love seeing how she plays with my favorite couple in every world, but still can make their core characteristics the same.

Muggle AU, Coffeeshop AU: Okay, you know this has to be good because it’s not a Harry/Ginny story! It’s Ron/Hermione, and it’s so absolutely lovely (there are epic glimpses of H/G in the background). Hermione and Ron’s romance is so in-character. I love the growth of these two characters throughout the story and how they ultimately, realistically, come together.

Muggle AU, Coffeeshop AU: A cute, short coffeeshop story, where Ginny find a particular regular a bit…vexing.

Coffeeshop AU: A coffeeshop AU thats not a Muggle AU? What? A delightful, slightly angsty and pining in all the best ways story where Harry runs a coffeeshop. One day, Ginny walks through the door. It’s a lot of does she know, does she not? And Pottermum does a fantastic job of slowly revealing what happened that led to where we are to the reader.

HP RP COMMUNITY PSA:

Hey everyone! I received a message from someone (who is involved in and enjoys the community) looking to do a Buzzfeed (or another similar publication) article about the HP RP community. 

“My intention would be to highlight the creative aspects of what you’re doing here and the unique way in which that brings the HP fan community together. Because it’s a new way to use the technology and the platform we have - an evolution of fanart and cosplay and fanfic all together.”

This article would involve myself and a few other RPers, and could be a really awesome opportunity and cool experience! 

However, since this article would discuss the HP RP gif community as a whole, we want to make sure that the decision is left up to everyone, not just a few people, and that the pros and cons are addressed and weighed. 

Cons: If the article were to be seen by a lot of people or go viral, the community could potentially have an influx of people, which may lead to trolls or negative and unwanted attention. 

This is also an LGBT+ safe space, and many RPers may not have come out yet to their family and friends, so we would want to ensure that if the article is written, everyone is aware of the potential exposure, and has a say in it (although there are ways to make a blog private for those who may wish to keep their personal info close to the chest). 

Pros: In spite of all that, there could also be an influx of really fun, nice and artistic people looking to join in on the imaginative community we’ve created (which I’m always down for). Yes, it might mean a bit of exposure, but the community has been growing rapidly anyway, and frankly I’m incredibly proud of our little corner of the internet and think it would be nice for this fabulous group of nerds to get some recognition. ;)

I refuse to be convinced that Ron is a anything but a freaking amazing cook. Kid grew up with Molly “no son of mine is eating toast for an eternity” Weasley. And also, he loves food. He would’ve taken to cooking like his life depended on it. Until it got extremely out of hand.

“Ron, I have told you. We don’t need truffle oil in the mac and cheese. Rose is three!”

“If you want our daughter to grow up without taste buds, then FINE.”

Ok but also Ginny HATED cooking. She always felt like her Mom forced her to participate because she was the only girl. When she was on her own playing for the Harpies she ordered take away almost every night or had frozen dinners. She only had well balanced meals when she went to Sunday dinners at the burrow or her friends got concerned for her well being and cooked for her. When she and Harry got married he was always the better cook but they did it together and she had fun helping him in the kitchen. If Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione had dinner together, Harry and Ron would cook dinner while Ginny and Hermione would talk about work or their kids drinking wine and admiring their husbands from the table.
