What is your favorite angst fic?

Unsurprisingly, this was very hard. So you’re getting a list ;) 

Turn by Sara’s Girl. Drarry. E. Summary: One good turn deserves another. Apparently. This is my favourite fic. period. It’s angsty and love and also Christmas. It’s happy and sad and every emotion in between. 

That the Science of Cartography is Limited by Rave. Wolfstar. M. Summary:  The whole thing is silly and illogical. There has to be a rhythm. There has to be a sense. Because there are things that make sense about living, and you can’t come to a logical conclusion from an illogical premise, it doesn’t work like that. Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Canon compliant. Enough said.

Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property by Helenish. Dreville. E.  Summary: Surely it is a mistake to allow a single youthful indiscretion to cloud an already promising career. God, I love this fic. It’s characterisations sparked an obsession with Draco/Neville that I was absolutely not prepared for. It is full of unexpected twists and beautiful hurt. 

From Valley Broad and Fen by Realmer06. Founders Era. T. Summary: Of them all, she’d loved him best. But life is not a fairy tale, and love isn’t always enough. Perhaps one of the most unique and beautiful stories I’ve ever read, following the painful tragedy of Helga Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Simply gorgeous. 

The Same Species as Shakespeare by Lomonoreen. Drarry. E. Summary:  Harry has been casually fascinated by Draco Malfoy for a long time. Draco has wanted to get one over on Harry Potter for the same length of time. When a person who seems intent on getting Draco in trouble for crimes he didn’t commit throws them in each other’s way, neither is exactly averse to the situation. But obsession, whilst perhaps a good idea in the abstract, is going to prove a very ugly reality. As with all Lomonoreen fics, this story is at times so painful and emotion-driven that it becomes uncomfortable. But this story takes so many intriguing turns that it has stayed with me for years.

I think it sucks that you have to go to so many different kinds of doctor to take care of yourself. It's the 21st century. I should be able to go to a single office where they scan me with a big xerox machine and tell me what I'm allergic to and why my tummy hurts and if I have any cancer or cavities or if my glasses prescription has changed. And then I should get a sticker.

Now I'm thinking about Steve walking into the home he shares with his mother to find his boyfriend talking at Diane about Dungeons and Dragons. Eddie is standing in the middle of the living room, doing his voices and talking a mile a minute, hand gestures aplenty.

And Diane just nods along, looking enraptured as she listens to every word.

Steve is like – noooo! boooo!

He should hiss and yowl like Eddie does! Goddamnit he wishes he had a spray bottle!

He has done everything to keep Dung Beetles & Dipshits out of his home – a safe, quiet space.

Lord only knows what chaos this woman's enthusiasm has unleashed now!

His mother glares across the living room with disapproval, pursing her lips as she cradles Eddie's Dungeon Master Nerd Bible in her lap, manicured nails tapping on the paper.

Oh shit, he might have said at least half of that out loud...

With a frighteningly quick switch from a deadly scowl to a warming smile, Diane turns her attention back to Eddie.

"Well, I think this is all very creative," she says.

Eddie grins, bouncing on his heels.

Do you have any advice on how to keep writing through the feeling that no one is reading?

Since I've neither had an active blog, nor been writing lately, I'm honoured by your trust with this question. My answer is tricky though.

Realistically, the answer is to get to a place where you are writing purely for yourself (and maybe one, really lovely, super nice friend). Fanfic is thankless. It always has been. You have to be writing for you and no one else. You have to write from your soul, and love what you're making your characters do. You should want to reread your own work, because no one gets that headcanon quite like you do.

But how to get there? Aye, there's the rub.

In my experience, the only way to get there is through. You write and write and write. You get mad and sad and disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. You get comments and love on something you hate. You lose a comp or have no one read a thing you post in a fest. You ask yourself if having the thing exist is enough for you. Some days, the answer is yes. Sometimes, it's no.

It sounds to me like you should take a break. But not forever. For a moment. For a breath. Hunt down a kernel of what you love about fanfic and write for it. Wanna write a self insert? Do it. Want to write shamelessly silly smut? Do it. Wanna do a crossover that no one else will even understand? Write it. It doesn't matter if you post it anywhere. But write the thing and love that you did. It'll help exercise that muscle.

And regardless, remember that there is someone reading it (even if you don't know they are). Your voice is needed in the world. So make the blorbos kiss. And keep doing it as long as it brings you joy.
