Wanderer chuckles, all low and mean, as if his entire purpose in life is to ridicule you. He continues ascending overhead, moving and looking like an angel, but the words that come out of his mouth are far from angelic. āCareful, now. I know you overestimate yourself, but I wonāt save you if you continue to scale a mountain with one hand.ā
āStop agitating me on purpose then!ā You nearly slip from the intensity of your yell, but thankfully, it isnāt your time yet.
āHow can I? Youāre cute when youāre mad.ā
Grumbling, you focus back on the mountain. Cute when mad. He must think heās goddamn adorable, then.
Youāre starting to lose sight of dents or protruding surfaces to get a hold of, and the mountain is getting steeper. You curse under your breath. If only you had Geo or Dendroāthatād help a lot much more. Maybe even Anemo, but that would be admitting defeat to the man whoās currently watching you intently.
Wanderer scoffs when your breath hitches, the surface youāre holding onto crumbling. He descends until youāre eye level. āIdiot, I told you that itād be safer if we didnāt climb this all the way.ā
āI know my limit.ā Maybe. You may or may not have gotten a little over-competitive and jumped a few times, but that shouldnāt be a problem.
āNot more than I do,ā he says.
āDonāt say it like that, weirdo.ā You appraise the mountain overhead and, with a sunken stomach, realize that heās right. Thereās still a long way to go, and itās a long fall back.
āDamn,ā you say. You turn to Wanderer and blink up at him with wide eyes, hoping he would take the hint without having to say it outright.
Wanderer sighs, holding out his arms. āJump.ā
āAre you serious?ā
āI wonāt let you fallāof course Iām fucking serious.ā
You grit your teeth, wondering if itās easier to humiliate yourself and jump into his arms or to let gravity do its work.
āHey,ā Wanderer says, gliding closer and hovering an arm behind your waist. āNo stupid ideas. Just jump and hold onto me.ā
Itās always unsettling when Wanderer is not acting all bratty, like youāre not quite sure if you should goad him back to being mean or watch him bristle when you point it out. Itās been happening too often recently. That must be saying something about him if his soft moments are scarier than his jabs.
Wordlessly, you reach out for his shoulder with one hand and hold back a yelp when the lack of balance causes you to slip. You hold on tight around his neck, eyes wide and heart jittery. Wanderer secures his arms, moving in one swift motion. Before you even know it, he has one arm on your back and the other under your knees.
āHow convenient it must be to have a ride as your companion,ā Wanderer mutters in amusement at your relieved face.
āYeah. Thatās why I keep you around,ā you say as he glides upward, barely straining from your weight. He looks as unaffected as ever.
He looks as infuriatingly and devastatingly beautiful as ever.
āHa,ā his smile is all sharp, āand not because you have a little crush on me?ā
āYou follow me around because you do. Donāt get it twisted.ā
He snorts, tipping on something a little more genuine. You wisely decide to stop ogling at his face and enjoy the view of the sky instead. The blue of his clothes and the shade of his eyes are much prettier, but youād rather lose that than start squirming in his arms. Not when heās carrying you bridal style and all.
Finally, he descends, hardly disturbing the grass with his grace. He sets you down, arms crossed, as you pat yourself off from dirt and stuff.
āWell?ā
You eye him warily. āWhat do you want?ā
āSome semblance of manners will do,ā he says, then leans close as if heās baring his face for you. Heās been less and less subtle recently, too.
Nonetheless, you find yourself smiling. The things heād do just to get a kissāit nearly makes you laugh out loud. But then heād start getting all irritated like a cat, and you much prefer when heās sweet like this. Sweet in his very Wanderer way, you mean.
You kiss him on the cheek. He puffs up like some proud peacock. He calls you adorable all the time, but heās the one whoās acting like this. Itās no wonder you keep him around.
i love how most yan wanderer fics that have nahida as a reoccurring/important character in the story either have:
a. nahida encouraging you and wanderer to become closer because you 'calm him down' and elicit joy from him
b. nahida having to TEAR scara off of you like he is a feral animal who escaped the zoo and latched onto a poor bystander (you)
c.
the mental image exhibit b gives made me laugh so hard please gkjkfsgkdgs that sums him up so well, across all iterations. just chomping down on you and refusing to let go (metaphorically) (or is it?).
i enjoy both approaches, authors really get creative. i like to see the fic's reasoning for why nahida encourages the behavior or discourages it. normally in yandere fics, the yandere and MC are the focal point, which makes sense since their relationship is what drives the narrative. so having a third party like nahida opens up new possibilities. whether it's writing the story from her perspective, having her speak with reader, or wanderer... there's a lot to do with it.
personally. the thought of nahida dangling you over wanderer's head for him to engage in self-improvement is hilarious. wanderer becoming a political science major to have the god of sumeru's permission to ask you on a date is a fun concept.
Omg BUT. HAVE YOU SEEN HOW SOFT SCARA LOOKED WHEN NAHIDA SHOWED CARE FOR HIM? LIKE A FEW SECONDS BEFORE THE "tsk"??? I HAVE A SCREENSHOT OF IT ON MY PC BUT I'M TOO LAZY TO GET ON BUT HE LOOK SO SOFT AND GENUINELY TOUCHED AND IT MADE ME SO HAPPY FOR HIM
sorry for the caps lock but this man just makes me want to scream because he's so adorable no matter what he does and what atrocities he commits
his relationship with nahida is very special to me. i consider nahida a foil for scara (and vice versa), two examples of higher beings that suffered mistreatment at the hands of humanity yet ended up so different. i find his one line during their fight very telling...
out of all the insults he could've directed at nahida, he picked the one that would, imo, hurt him the most to hear. he inadvertently reveals a lot about himself with his words and actions. since nahida is the god of wisdom, it makes sense she'd absorb this knowledge and make good use of it. she is guiding him well. scara will probably never admit it, but he's gotta have a modicum of respect for her.
all this gave me an epiphany: if scara likes you, you can surprisingly get away with a lot.
he'll grumble, glower, and have no shortage of insults, but if you tease him, he won't seriously try to stop it. he lets it happen. if this is what he has to endure to maintain your attention, then so be it. he's persevered through worse. he'll just have to find some poor, unfortunate soul to release his pent-up frustration on...
