First off, fuck any and all domestic abusers, male on female, female on male, or any other gender on gender. This is not a “white knight” thing, it’s a “basic human dignity” thing.

Second, while people are assuming Justin Roiland is too big to fail for Warner, David Zaslav as part of his cancellation spree was looking to cancel American Dad to save budget, only to find the contract didn’t let him. Roiland may not be as bulletproof as one would gather given Zaslav may see this as an opportunity to exit a very expensive contract and all the spin-offs, tie-ins (like the Rick and Morty anime from the director of Tower of God) and other stuff being tax write offs.

Third, the fact that these are felony charges in California makes things so much worse. In California, domestic assault is classified as a misdemeanor unless a weapon is involved. Same with false imprisonment. So not only was Roiland charged with domestic violence, he was allegedly assaulting this woman with a weapon, which makes the consequences much harsher, turning a maximum sentence of 2 years into a maximum sentence of 9-10 years.

This could go a lot of different ways, although as of right now it’s too early to say.

In my experience, as a roleplayer, people who write self-inserts get more emotionally invested in the roleplay, and therefore if things don’t go exactly the way they want (often wish fulfilment if you, the other party, is playing a canon character) they get really like. Angry and upset. Worse, they can sometimes get really obsessed with you, the person behind the screen, and start trying to treat you more like a romantic partner than an rp partner. This is, as far as I’m aware, why the stigma against self inserts exist. Because this happens with some frequency in roleplay spaces. 🤷
