I’m supposed to be writing/arting again. But every time I think about it I can only think of something snarky or half assed. I don’t know what I am supposed to do. They just want me to get better. I guess… I want to get better too (I’m not sure what “better” is). I guess I’m starting this again because this blogging/constant writing used to help me a lot. Over the years though I got over it. I started feeling pressure and disinterested with sharing more than what I just said with others. So for those of you who actually know who’s behind the computer screen welcome to more of my deeper and perhaps more vivid thoughts. Time to time, I don’t usually blog with just boring prose. One of the most interesting things I’ve noticed about non-natives appropriating our stuff is they never want anything but sage, smudging, and feathers.

Native people will share: our food, our music, our dancing, our art.

But no one is interested in those. They don’t CARE about our food and music. We never see those things in popular culture. Non-natives just want to take our religious items, because they feel entitled to the things people don’t want to share.

Food! There’s a been a major resurgence of interest in indigenous foods lead by Native chefs, many of whom are on youtube!

Dance! This one is a little trickier because no, you, non-Native person absolutely should not dance at the powwows unless it’s an open dance AND you’ve been invited to do so. (And if you have, please don’t do the white hippie dance. Please.) However, you can and absolute come out and support the circuit & the dancers. Some of my favorite dancers/competitions:

O.B. (Ohh Bizz) who mostly does grass dancing. (Yeah, I know he hasn’t updated in forever. the #NoDAPL protests derailed a lot of people’s lives.) He’s a lot of fun to watch and a complete sweetheart.

While I have no issue with tumblr trying out new website functions, this one is confounding to me? Less that it exists and more why it exists. In many of the above wordings, it takes the same keyword and ‘translates’ it into the same pictogram, such as ‘b. a .b .y’ or ‘c. h. i. l. d’ (spaced for legibility), or l.a.u.g.h and l.m.a.o. As far as I can see, it adds nothing of value to the post, often decreases legibility, and if anyone uses some of these extremely common keywords in a post they want to discuss a serious topic with it’s going to infantalise that conversation. Not to mention the living hell this will cause for screen readers. It even does it with the start of a word- for instance s.h.o.e.l.a.c.e. Is this a function that can be toggled? 

And even if you can turn it off, and I hope you can; what was the intent? Does this create a more Gen-Z friendly website or something? I’d love to be a fly on the wall for the developer meeting that made this happen.

For anyone like myself who had no idea what was causing this, it’s in tumblr labs and it’s called ‘emojify’. I presumed the toggle would allow you to view emojis in desktop mode when they had been placed by a user on a mobile rather than showing a box.

But nope, tumblr really did make a ‘fuck up the post’ button! I have to wonder why.
