Tyrant

I am a tyrant of ideas.

I surround myself with beliefs like a cabinet of advisers. They arm me with confidence to face the world. They are not the source of my essential worth, but without them I feel like I am nothing.

Yet I am a paranoid tyrant because I know that they can betray me. At any moment, one of my beliefs can suffer a mortal wound, but I will not cry, “My beloved idea!” I will twist the knife and say, “The truth would not have failed me.”

I need constant warfare so that I may see how they fight. The assassin is my friend. I watch with eager anticipation to see which blow will pierce the armor so I can rejoice in the death of a lie, or rest in the strength of the truth.
