ok some homophobic darry w pony x curly hcs cause i was killing myself trying to actually rant about it like in my way earlier post (this one)

•pls understand that he still loves pony, rlly he does truly, i dont think thats the thing in question here and dont think that ever rlly will b. HOWEVER this does make pony worry that he has to b perfect everywhere else to get darry to love and see him the same again

•he fully pretends it doesnt exist, he doesnt ask questions about curly and pony at all he pretends pony just doesnt have a love life at all but u can just tell he has SOME questions

•even if darry wouldnt hurt pony and pony makes that clear, curly would get pretty protective. i could see him being down to hide pony somewhere or even run away some place w him though pony would always turn that idea down

•pony chooses to sleep over at two bits house sometimes to get away. wether or not two bit tells darry is up to pony, all two would do is ensure darry that hes safe and he knows where he is, thats enough for darry but not for soda!!

•darry overcompensates in some areas to show that he still does love pony even if he doesn’t fully support him. maybe he tries cooking ponys favorite foods more often, giving him a lil more allowance, shows up at his track races more enthusiastic

•pony would hesitate to show more affection towards curly. whatever point curly and pony was at affection wise when darry found out anout them, theres a cap on that, pony doesnt wanna do more than they already do. he’s wondering if what they do together is right and or “worth it” to lose family over. this is a whoollleee different issue curly and pony argue about

•curly automatically hates authority figures but here he hates darry on a personal level for this one, he interacts w darry in ways he hasnt w others before, probably maybe could count as a hate rime some of the things he does

•w bisexual pony, darry is more lenient on him bc there is a chance he could end up w a girl. so when pony comes home w curly, darry is hoping it wont last much long and ponys only doing it for the fun of it now before he grows up and life gets more #serious. AND TO B 100% FAIR, darrys homophobia is coming from a place of worry for pony. if anyone finds out hes dippin in the pool of the same gender, brother it is wraps for ur future

•darry would call and say any other sayings before calling pony gay, bc of that it takes a while for pony to admit to himself too!! interessttinnngggg bc curly doesnt call himself gay either, partly bc of homophobia as well but also mainly bc he doesnt see the point in labeling himself. anywho both darry and pony doing that would also get under his skin bc it feels like ponys starting to not take what they have serious either, which ofc hurts curlys feelings even if he doesnt wanna admit it

•if it came down to it and pony and curly did get caught by the wrong ppl and were in trouble, darry would come to their defense. like i said i dont think hes hateful on purpose, just a product of conditioning/environment

How many times do we think the Curtis brothers have woken up in the morning to find a greaser they don’t even know sleeping on their couch?

“Hey. Who’re you?”

“Oh, hey. I heard this was a safe place to spend the night.”

“Heard from who?”

“A buddy of mine, his girl gets her hair done by a broad whose boyfriend was in the cooler with a hood who runs with Tim Shepard’s gang.”

“Right.”

I’ve seen “Johnny dies but Dally lives” scenarios, but what about the other way around?

After Dally and Pony leave the hospital, the doctors manage to resuscitate Johnny. Thinking Johnny is dead, Dally goes out and gets himself shot à la west side story. The gang learns that Johnny survived only after the fact, and Johnny wakes up to learn of Dally’s fate.

So now we have a Johnny who lives, and who lives when Dally doesn’t. A Johnny who is forever changed by everything he’s been through, for better or for worse. Who found a new appreciation for life but who had made peace with his death. Who rejected his parents so he probably can’t go home and doesn’t want to anyway. Who has to contend with his role in Dally’s death. Who is paralysed from the waist down. Who is now the living killer of Bob Sheldon, although the publicity surrounding the fire rescue and the Windrixville families could help him to be exonerated. Who now has to follow his own advice of “stay gold” which can be easier as a dying wish than a continuous living action. Who has no more time with Dally. Who does have more time with Ponyboy. Who has more than sixteen years now, whatever they may bring.

There’s so much to explore in a scenario where Johnny lives, and it’s so under explored. Johnny is so changed by the end of the book; what would happen if he continued living after such a monumental transformation? How would he act? Who would he be? How would he go about discovering it?

Bob and Cherry’s relationship is partly a casualty of 1960s gender roles. If your girlfriend tells you she doesn’t like you fighting and drinking, it doesn’t really mean anything because of course girls don’t like those things. Those are boy things. And it’s normal for girls to get upset when their boys do boy things because girls are delicate and sensitive like that, but it doesn’t mean you stop doing boy things just because your girl wants you to. Then you’re a pansy.

So that’s just the way it is; boys will be boys and girls sometimes get upset about it. That’s certainly what marriage is like, according to the jokes of all the adult men you know. You do manly things and occasionally your wife gets upset, so you buy her a pretty trinket and say sweet things to her and you try not to do those things in her presence out of chivalry. But obviously you don’t stop doing manly things, because otherwise you wouldn’t be a real man. And women want a real man more than they want you to correct whatever behavior they’re nagging you about this week.

Probably my darkest headcanon is that Dally has been sexually assaulted by cops/prison guards. Not because it’s the most angsty fanfic trope I can think of, or because we need one conclusive explanation for his behavior or his trauma regarding jail, but because it’s just very likely. Sexual assault and abuse by cops and correctional officers, specifically in juvenile detention centers, is rampant. A kid who’s lived on the streets and been in and out of jail and reformatories since he was ten would most likely have been subjected to that particular form of police brutality.

Joking aside, I got carried away, and now we’ve got this! Post-rumble walk home. Darry got to show off his abs, Pony sprained an ankle, Soda lost his pretty privileges, Steve’s curls stayed perfectly intact, Two-Bit got brain damage, Dally broke his nose blocking a punch with his face, and Johnny kicked major ass! Eat up, my fellow outsider fans!

Darry faces his problems head on or pretends they don't exist, with very little grey area. Soda will talk about the small problems easy enough, but never the big ones - those he hides. But Pony? Pony doesn't face any of his problems. Ever. He just runs. When Johnny died, he wandered the streets pretending they were alive for hours, until a man saw him and took pity. He has nightmares about his parents but his mind makes him forget them - he runs even when he's not thinking about it. When Darry hit him, he ran. When the Socs cornered him and Johnny at the fountain that night, he tried to run. Ponyboy Curtis has always been a runner, but never towards things. Just away from them.

ANGSTY WHUMP OUTSIDERS FIC IDEA!!! yall know how Ponyboy wandered the streets confused and delirious, for HOURS, after Johnny died? And how the only reason he was able to get home was because a random ass guy saw him and took pity and drove him home? What if said random ass guy wasn't some nice, sympathetic guy? What if he saw an opportunity? After all, a young, pretty teen, all busted up and confused, wandering around late at night with no one around? It's a miracle Pony didn't get kidnapped! i NEED a fic where Pony gets into some rando's car because he's too delirious to know better, and ends up getting kidnapped. And honestly IDC if Dally's alive or not, but it'd be like, bonus points if he is. Because just imagine this interaction: The phone at the Curtis house rings and Darry rushes to pick it up because it's been hours and his baby brother still isn't home. "Ponyboy!? Pony is that you!?" "Wha- Darry, no, it's me. I'm in trouble-" "What!? Is Ponyboy with you? Dally what the fuck did you do!? It's been hours and neither of y'all are home!" And I dunno how to write dialogue but just imagine that Dally realizes he left a 14 year old alone in a hospital, severely injured and confused and grieving, and he actually finds a place to hide until the gang can pick him up, and he patches up the wound on his stomach, and then he and the gang go through hell dealing with the loss of Johnny AND Pony's kidnapping.

When the older guys at work are complaining about their children sometimes Darry joins in and complains about Ponyboy "the other day the kid....."

After a year or so new people goin the roofing crew and sometimes not knowing that Ponyboy is Darrys brother get real confused becuse they was swear Darry is in his early 20s but what do you mean hes complainging about having a teenage kid.

When the original crew and Darry find out about this confusion instead of correcting it they lean into it making jokes , Darry starts complaining about Sodapop calling him "the older one" and the new guys get even more confused

Additionally one time the new guys see Darry with Ponyboy , hes telling Pony to be home by the time the street lights turn on Pony walks away sarcastically saying " yeah whatever ya say old man"

Which further solidify the idea that Darry is infact a father and just looks really young.

Was originally amazed at how Ponyboy could fit a whole book in his back pocket. Of course he could… it’s a pocket book.

These are your mass markets mass market, they were everywhere like the pharmacy, grocery stores, liquor stores- practically inescapable! Small versions of either major books or easy readers for dirt cheap. Your pocket book and transistor radios were basically the ‘phones’ / pocket sized entertainment (pay phones and like regular phones were… also phones.)

They’re actually being phased out this year apparently! Which sucks, I have a ton and they always have the better covers…

I talked two years ago about just how much people carried around in their pockets and I think Ponyboy alone: Book, comb, bouncy ball, billfold, maybe pomade and he should have carried a blade! :0

ugh this is so sad i hate losing accessibility in reading. books like this, small enough to fit in your pocket, and cheap enough to buy in gas stations, call out to kids who have never seen a library, let alone stepped inside a bookstore. kids who saw a book amongst a wall of cigarettes and chips and thought, hey, let’s try it out, and blossomed a love for reading that they could carry around with them everywhere. when’s the last time you saw a kid, not at school, just pull out a book instead of their phone. it’s so so sad what technological industrialization has done to modern day societies and teenagers
