I agree for like individual or small-group interpersonal violence, but I think I understand the need to "make sense of" a lot more for large-scale atrocity—because I and (I think) many other people would also put "creates systems of care" (or perhaps "builds societies") in those top 5, so a large-scale atrocity is like the entropic "all the air molecules go to one side of the room" of human collective behavior. most people's models of humanity have roughly balancing tendencies towards violence and towards care/kindness, so an event where so many people's actions align totally on the side of violence all at once seems to demand explanation

#for me it’s not the violence but the scale #like I can understand ‘person kills another person’#but ‘government dedicates billions of dollars and thousands of people to erase a whole people’#is just such an insane scope of violence that I can’t really wrap my head around it

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I think it's a... Sign, I suppose, of the comfort of antiblackness, that it's easier to continue to beg Black people for patience, to expect it, feel entitled to it even, than it is to go to your peers and tell them to knock it off. Personally. There's a quote, I wish I could remember it, about the finite-ness of Black Patience. Mm.
