Five Years and Still Standing

This is something I've been wanting to write for a while now, forgive the ranting nature of it, I promise it all comes together by the end of the post. I've been putting energy and hustling hard to make something happen for Impossible Voyage for 5 years now. We've seen 4 drummers, 4 bassists, 3 guitarists and a few local record label releases in these five years with myself being the sole constant force since the inception of the band back in the summer of 09'. I want to talk a bit about our journey so far and what its meant to me, since this has been the longest and most energy consuming project I've ever been apart of. Over the years in New Jersey bands like Knife the Glitter, Rocking Back and Forth to Create the Illusion of Satisfaction, The Number 12 looks like you, and many more (all with similarly exuberant sentences as names) had built a New Jersey scene and energy that seemed very cool to a 13 year old Anthony. I saw the attraction to this scene, the inaccessibility and raw emotion that kept those who would oppress it omitted from its fun. It was an exciting time to be involved in music. Some of these bands went on to minor success, and others faded from memory. Folly kept the New Jersey dream alive still, and bands like Red Light Green Light held the Rockaway flag high. But still these bands faded too. At this point (2008) I had met many of you fans of the scene that would later become some of my best friends. I had played many shows in the previous two bands I tickled ivories in, and met many a fellow scenester in the tri-state area. And so when there was no clear holder of the flag I thought it was my chance to grab it. I talked to Jonny, Dylan and Connor about forming a band with some sort of hope that we'd sound vaguely like Horse the Band mashed with The Fall of Troy. How could that not hit home for the Rockaway/Denville scene? And yet many of us (bandmates and fans alike) were shipping off to college, and we caught what little flame was still left that wasn't quite enough to blow us up as I had secretly hoped. Still, those that had heard our call became staunch supporters. And to those fans that are all now such close friends and family to me I want to say thank you, and that I love you all. We played our fist show in a hot field in Rockaway those five years ago. This was before Yuck formed and shipped Jonny over seas (The first of many members to shuffle in and out of the band). It was before College and before yoko-ono esque girlfriends. Before forceful parents and fear of the future would be ripping the band apart over and over again for the next 4 years. I had had a dream those 5 years ago. I had a vision. I wanted this band to come up and take the mantle left behind by the disbanding of Rockaway and Denville's latest and finest. But the struggles we had to keep a steady lineup and build a steady amount of material over ensuing years had proved more difficult than anything I could have ever imagined.  Time after time the band was left with a gaping whole that a quitting or leaving member had previously fulfilled and time after time I was left picking up the pieces to a project that was very near and dear to my heart. Every time all the pieces scattered to the wind. A complete redo over and over. I've been doing this again and again for 5 years now and because of this constant reincarnating we've never been able to have any sort of stability that would be conducive to touring or recording or anything of that scope. Thus you've seen small smatterings of releases here and there. With each release we've released one less song. This is as apparent to me as it probably is to a lot of you and its painful to look at the VERY large backlog of music that has been made and thrown away with each member that left. Several albums worth of material has been born and drowned without ever even seeing a single recording mic (although at least many of it has been played live to you wonderful friends and fans). Every time the band is pushed down I ask myself: Is it worth it to continue? Wouldn't any sane person who is tired of the emotional roller coaster that is this band have decided its better to cut losses by now? Let it be known that I have never come to a clear or easy answer to these questions. The only thing that is clear to me is that after every devastating blow to this project I have somehow been able to get up and continue. And if I did that before then I can do it again. With every sundering destruction of the band I tick another notch on my prison wall. Another notch is another day. Another day closer to a dream being realized and a freedom to be had in knowing our success. And sure, maybe some would say that logic is flawed but its driven me this far, and its continued to fill the part of my soul that never wants to give up. That never wants to surrender. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes of last year, stronger and wiser every time I die. Sometimes I make myself weary even thinking about all of the history, all of the arguments and tears shed and deep dark frustrations had. Sometimes I get really really sad about it. Sad about the self fulfilling nature of our band name. About all the times people have tried to help us and we couldn't even help ourselves because of some bump in the road. "But that was then and this is now" I say every time, and I pick myself up, dust myself off, and keep looking forward. So yeah, its been five years. And we're finally playing in NYC for the first time. At Brooklyn's St. Vitus Bar. It took my first band less than two years to play several well attended shows in NYC, and it took this one 5 years to finally drag its ass to Brooklyn. But I'm relieved. Because despite the slow turn of these wheels every year does look like progress when compared to the last. The songs are sharper. The bandmates are better players and better friends still. And the future, while never seeming to be any closer, always seems like its getting bigger. Who knows where we'll be in another 5 years but you can be sure I'll still be here, chipping more notches in the wall, waiting to break out into the sun. This might be our last show for a while. So come if you give a damn. Every attendance had and every link shared, and every props given and handshake had at our post set breakdown makes me swell with pride as I write this. Truly it does, I feel the power of all the years of hope. The high fives and the smiles and the encouragement. Thank you all so very much from the bottom of my heart for seeing me this far. And I hope you'll see me farther soon as we take a break and work on a new album. We don't have any money, but we have each other. So expect it to be a low-key production. No studio affordability means our music has to be that much stronger. You can polish a turd but when there aint no polish ya just gotta shit a real nice turd in the first place. We hope to do just that. Here's to another 5 years.

Here's an interview me and tommy did in 2011 for our friend that was interning at a place but then she didn't work there anymore and therefore our interview never saw the light of day. Also its (possibly) hilarious that we're talking about things that have COMPLETELY changed since then and the retrospect is quite astounding (to me at least). Now you can read how extremely annoying and hilariously (not) funny me and tommy were in 2011. -Anthony INTERVIEW:

• What was the first record/cassette/CD that you owned and how did it change you?

Anthony Gobeille: ACDC was my first, my dad gave it to me. I never listened to it!

Tommy VanHerwarde: NOW THATS WHAT I CALL MUSIC VOLUME 3! or it was No Strings Attached by N*Sync..

• If you could pick any musician's brain over a beer, who would it be?

AG: I would definitly want to pick the brain of Ben Wienman. Dillinger Escape Plan blows my mind with every new release. They just keep getting better somehow. And he is just so damn smart! Or at least seems like he is in interviews.

TV: Tomas Erak of the Fall of Troy. It may or may not show in my guitar playing but i love him so much.

• What would the name of your band's biography be?

AG: Impossible Voyage: An Impossible Voyage... GET IT?!?!?!

• Name your dream tour: up to 5 bands, dead or alive.

AG: HORSE the Band, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Genghis Tron, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Rhapsody of Fire!

TV: HORSE the Band, The Fall of Troy, Cloudkicker, The Fall of Troy, annnnd The Fall of Troy. And Maps & Atlases.

AG: OH YEAH them too. No dead guys. We keep it modern.

TV: Dylan's would be Damiera, The Blood Brothers, Sting, As Tall as Lions, and RUSH.

AG: yeah it totally would be.

TV: And matt's would be.. Jazz guys.... And sad folksy guys..

AG: HAHA yeah thats so probably not true at all. But I secretly agree.

• How would it feel to play with your favorite band?

AG: I'd probably be really nervous and even less funny than usual.

• What's the funniest moment your band has ever experienced?

TV: At this show in Newark, in a basement of this Hispanic metal bar, it was 1:30 in the morning and we played our set and it went really well, the crowd was into it, and after we played the singer from one of the other bands that hooked us up with the gig, who was shirtless, very sweaty, and very inebriated, jumped on the mic and demanded that the crowd "GIVE IT UP FOR IMPOSSIBLE. FUCKIN. MISSION MANNG." And the crowd corrected him (in unison) with "VOYAGE!"

AG: Yes that was quite funny.

• ...the craziest/most bizarre?

AG: Every time I get naked. Which is every time.. GIGGIDY GOO.

TV: yeahhhh.. Well the most bizarre was when Dylan was hammered and played his guitar with his hair. Maybe that falls under the category of craziest as well as most awesome.

• Who are you musically influenced by that no one would ever guess by listening to your music?

AG: I don't think anything would surprise anyone, I wear my influences on my sleeve pretty hard. I don't think its a secret among our friends/fans that I love 90's techno alongside my love for neo-black metal bullshit like Dimmu Borgir.

TV: It's probably not a surprise that a lot of my roots are from crappy screamo bands of the early 2000's.

• Tell us about the most unique member of your band and why he/she has earned this title.

AG: Dylan.

TV: Yeah Dylan is pretty weird. The stuff anthony does is pretty "unique" as well, but Dylan is so much more unique as both a person and a musician, he's awesome. And he uses effects way more often and way more adeptly than anyone I've ever seen.

AG: I LOVE HIM.

TV: ME TOO.

AG: AND MATT!

TV: YEAH I WISH THEY WERE HERE BEING UNIQUE WITH US RIGHT NOW!

• If someone invested a million dollars into your band, how would you use the money?

AG: On educating people to the wonders of training your ear a little bit. I think most people aren't even aware that they aren't listening to half the things happening in the music they listen to.

TV: BUY A BASS AMP. And what Anthony said.

AG: YEAH! Yeah, we use way too much of Dylan's gear, we'd probably just spend it buying our own gear and giving all the great stuff Dylan lends us back to him.

• How do you feel being on stage when the audience is having an amazing time?

TV: Happy. Energetic. And usually very sweaty.

AG: But not sweaty enough to take all yo clothes off like me eh?

• Which 5 songs would you cover if you had a cover band?

AG: Wellll personally I've always wanted to have an F-Zero cover band. But maybe thats just me..

• If you swapped ipods with other members of your band, what's the most surprising music you'd find?

TV: Well I know I was surprised to find "Halo" by Beyonce on Anthony's iPod, since the only other things on there are death metal and hardcore techno.

AG: Yeahh.. well she sounds really nice in that song. It's so epic!

• Name the place you'd most like to play a show, anywhere in the world.

TV: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN OBVIOUSLY. But other than that hmm..

AG: ANYWHERE IN JAPAN!

TV: BAHA yeah definitely not Japan.

AG: Aww!

TV: Nah just kidding obviously, I'd love to play Mt. Fuji. or at Hattori Hanzo's cafe.

AG: OMG. YES.

• What's the most memorable musical moment of your life?

TV: I made a "solo face" the other day. Didn't even mean to.

AG: Anytime I play music with Matt Olsson. Because he's the best drummer on the planet. possibly..

TV: Probably. Definitely. MOST DEFINITELY!

• If you got a band tattoo, which band would it be?

TV: IMPOSSIBLE VOYAGE, so they wouldn't be able to kick me out.

AG: Well then it'd be funnier to kick you out.

TV: -___-

AG: I'd love to get "IM NEITHER ANGEL NOR A DEMON SPAWN." Its a Periphery lyric. No, but seriously that'd be the worst thing to get tattooed on you. I saw some pictures of people with that. I laughed.

TV: Or the same tattoo but misspell it ANGLE instead of ANGEL.

AG: HAAA!

• Tell us a situation where another band really helped you out.

AG: We tend to be that band that "helps people." Or rather Dylan's gear tends to help people.

TV: I mean Lost Blue tries to book us all the time, they're really nice guys. We like them. Their bassist Greg let me borrow his AC adapter one time.

AG: Man we sound like we never play with bands on this question!

TV: The other five bands that Matt's in lending us their drummer.

AG: Yeah seriously that guy's in so many bands!

• What moment has made all of the hard work being a musician worth it?

TV: CAUSING MOSH PITZ. And improvising the jam section in "The Adventurer" and having it sound pretty cool.

AG: YEAH MOSH PITZ!

• If your band was a comic, what would each member's super power be?

TV: How bout the power of flight? That do anything for ya? Thats levitation holmes.

AG: How bout the power to kill a yak... From two hundred yards away... WITH MIND BULLETS!

TV: THATS TELEKINESES ANTHONY. How bout the power...

AG: to move you... Mmm yes Tenacious D that was good Tom. But seriously I think whatever powers we did have Dylan would have something really funny and weird. I'd be the Hulk. Cuz i'm so MAD.

TV: Well hold on which Pokemon would we be.

AG: What would Matt be.

TV: Wobbufett.

AG: HAHAAA! yeahh... And Dylan would be Lapras.

TV: He'd be Tangela dude.

AG: Hahaha shit yeah he would be! Well I really like Squirtle. So I'll be-

TV: Andrew W. K.

AG: Yeah I'll be Andrew W. K.

TV: And I'll be a giraffe.

AG: Girafarig.
