Film Blog turned 9 today!
Action movie where people transform into interesting creatures called ‘Avatars’ in order to carry out military operations. The movie is filled with shooting, action and adventure and could be considered exciting if you’re into that type of thing.
The action is not bad and the back and forth between the two opposing factions in the film feels competitive enough to make the movie somewhat compelling.
The negatives are the characters feel ordinary and bland and we are not really given any reason to connect with them in a strong way. The movie doesn’t stand out as being exceptional as you could see the same innovative action in most run of the mil action films. So all in all even though ‘Avatar’ is not bad it is not exceptional either.
6.5/10
Home team is a sports drama about a young boys American football team. We get a complete overview of the young boys journey and adventure and their highs and lows as a team.
The piece suffers with no real inspiring or standout characters for the audience to really invest in and at times can be tedious as a result. The main focal point of the team is the boys coach Sean Payton played by actor Kevin James who is a stern and established football coach who you could argue carries the piece as a character.
Plus the piece contains touching moments from the boys teams experience along with expressive reactions from the boys.
If you want to watch a narrative about the journey of a football team then this piece is fine depending on the viewers preference but at the same time they could have had more inspiring and developed characters to make the piece more interesting.
Score-6/10
The Blue Lagoon (1980 version)is an action adventure sequence where two young children and an old man find themselves stranded on a deserted island. The young children, a boy and a girl, named Richard and Em descend into adulthood as we follow their journey. Richard is played by Christopher Atkins and Em is played by Brooke Sheilds.
The film writer does things both right and wrong. When they arrive on the island we get many shots of the beauty of the island as well as showing scenes of the travellers swimming in the sea to build up a sense of intrigue for the location for the story plot. We also see clips of animals on the island like parrots, dolphins and turtles to get the audience interested in the feeling of nature and beauty about the island.
The protagonist characters engage in naturalistic endeveours throughout the piece like the boy Richard fishing for food and the girl Em having her period. This might interest the viewer as it’s an accurate representation of people being involved in a jungle lifestyle.
However with no real story or plot and much of the action being focused on routine everyday activities you could argue that the piece feels tedious. There aren’t many innovative scenes in terms of action which could really excite the viewer. With the exception of a scene involving a group of tribesmen committing a murder.
That isn’t the strength of the piece however. The strength of the piece lies in engaging the viewer with the scenic nature of the island. And also the intimacy between Richard and Em which is shown over melodic music to give the viewer a sentimental feeling of romance and loving connection.
The protagonist characters are kept simple - they are an ordinary boy and girl who are like feral children. Which is expected given the plot.
With no real standout action or creativity you could say that it’s hard to argue that this is a truly great piece, but as I’ve said before the strength lies in other areas of the piece. Some people will enjoy this whilst others may find it boring.
Score-7/10
365 days is a mafia inspired film based in Sicily, Italy about a gangster named Massimo played by Michele Moronne who tries to get a woman named Laura played by Anne Marie Sieklucka - to fall in love with him.
The film builds up drama and excitement with several heated exchanges between Massimo and Laura. There are several graphic sex scenes which liven up the action depending on the viewers preference. Along with showing Massimo engaging in gangsta activity to communicate the message he means business.
The whole thing feels like a convincing representation of the gangster lifestyle and as a result of that it is fun to watch. Allowing the audience to engage in a world and lifestyle which may not be familiar to them.
Score-8.5/10
Red Notice is an action film which does things well and also does things not so well. The first thing the film does well is the engaging story which keeps the viewer guessing what will happen throughout which is complemented by fast paced cutting edge action scenes which are fun to watch.
The protagonist characters are developed through having a role and a purpose. ‘John Hartley’ played by Dwayne Johnson is a cop aiming to solve a case and ‘Nolan Booth’ played by Ryan Reynolds is a world renowned art thief. We learn through the action scenes that both men are highly skilful and professional which makes their characters interesting.
Even though the action is entertaining - elements of the plot are hard to grasp immediately and the film feels unfinished.
Score- 6/10
Coach Ken Carter played by Samuel L. Jackson agrees to become basketball coach for Richmond high school. He serves as a mentor and a role model to the boys as he tries to mould them. The film is complete with several inspirational and touching speeches from the coach to the boys to get the audience interested in the film.
There are scenes like the relationship between one of the players and his girlfriend and a scene where the boys sneak out to go to a party but not much else in terms of building the characters of the basketball players.
Also nothing really stands out about the story as being a great idea as the film mostly consists of Coach Carter either inspiring or discipling the boys for games.
Plus I suppose the film has an uplifting message about education which is a plus point. So even though it could have been better it is a good watch.
Score- 6.5/10
The Harder They Come is a ghetto inspired tale, based in Jamaica, about a troublesome young man named Ivan played by Jimmy Cliff who is trying to take off as a musical star but finds himself in a conflicting situation.
The action is never boring as Ivan is constantly involved in dramatically tense scenes throughout the piece and the sense of adventure and pursuit keep the audience guessing what’s going to happen next.
The action scenes are fun but do not stretch beyond the realm of realism even though Ivan is portrayed as having an uncanny ability to get out of difficult situations which makes the action scenes exciting and keeps you questioning what he is capable of doing as well as being impressed by him.
Score- 10/10
Uncorked is a ghetto inspired narrative about a young man named Elijah who wants to become a Sommelier ( a person with professional insight into different types of wine) even though his father wants him to work in their barbecue business. If you find it difficult to see how a film about working a job could be engaging you are wrong. The film has a sense of being adventurous as it covers the different stages of Elijah‘s life and journey. There are plenty of dramatic scenes throughout whilst sustaining the sense of the action resembling real life which makes it feel authentic and identifiable. The stubborn father also adds to the sense of creating dramatic tension throughout the piece.
Overall a truly entertaining piece which isn’t too ambitious with the action as it tries to resemble reality and create drama at the same time which works as the piece does not feel boring at all.
Score-7.5/10
Dastak is a tale about an unpredictable madman named Sharad Sule becoming obsessed with female celebrity Sushmita. The intense cutting edge action keeps the viewer engaged throughout the film along with the elusiveness of the Sharad Sule character. The storyline is interesting along with the action which takes several unpredictable turns… the film is definitely a must watch.
Score- 8.5/10
Gangster inspired film which focuses on the street life of 4 black teenage men. The action doesn‘t appear to be going anywhere to begin with but takes an interesting twisted turn when murders start happening. The killings stand out because the action is so much like real life. Protagonist characters ’Q’ who is played by Omar Epps and ‘Bishop’ who is played by Tupac Shakur both give inspired performances. The story is interesting and there is plenty of talking points throughout the film. Overall it’s a great film that you must watch.
Score- 9.5/10
John Henry played by Terry Crews is a guy who lives with his quirky disabled father in a small house… His mission is to protect a strange Hispanic lady from a violent gangster who is pursuing her - played by rapper Ludacris. There are too many bland talking scenes in the film involving Crews and the Hispanic lady. The violence is absolutely outrageous - scenes which include putting a Bunsen burner to somebodys face and smashing somebody’s head with a sledgehammer. Other than that the whole thing feels uninspired and would be better off avoiding…
Score- 4/10
King Richard is a film based on the childhood of real life tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. The protagonist character is the girls dad Richard- played by Will Smith who serves as a manager for the young potential tennis playing girls. You may ask the question “how could a story about two young children possibly be compelling viewing?” if thats what you are thinking you could not be more wrong. The film contains drama, story telling and high points in the girls lives. It shows difficult decisions the intriguing and stubborn King Richard character had to make. Along with hardships Richard experiences along his journey. The entire film is compelling and entertaining and definitely a must watch…
Score- 9/10
Villains manufacture a new drug that gives people superhuman abilities. Protagonist actor ’Art’ played by Jamie Foxx tries to stop them as he‘s accompanied by a dexterous schoolgirl who is a former customer for the drug created by the villains. It’s an action film but none of the action particularly stands out or comes across as being original or inspired. The film is mostly carried by the somewhat compelling story and a sense of pursuit. It’s a perfect film for someone who wants to watch a nice story for an hour and a half.
Some of the scenes and content is quite graphic if you’re into that sort of thing. There are a few character building scenes like focusing on the rapping prowess of the schoolgirl played by Dominique Fishback but nothing here stands out as being must watch television. Watch the film - but only if you have nothing better to do…
Score-5.5/10
