i think my favorite thing about the 'i hope you know you do matter to me' / 'i know' exchange is that it's.... so clearly not all of what eddie means or wants to say, and he is struggling to get it out. and like, eddie is not an inarticulate man. he's good with words. he's not always very good at communication, that's a separate thing, but when he actually intends to say something, especially to buck, he's usually good at finding the right words.

but this time, in this moment, the words don't want to come. he can't find a way to express everything buck means to him, can maybe barely look at the shape of it himself, so he's left with that barest and most essential truth.

and buck's 'i know' is so gentle. like, 'i know. i know you can't say it. i can't say it either. i get it. it's okay. i know.'
