How do you guys get good at detail. like vivid “shit, i can see it in my brain” detail? can someone give me some tips??

Build an emotional connection with the scene. There’s always a main feeling going on in each scene, an overarching tone and/or mood. The characters should be feeling something with each setting, it should be telling them something, if they’re paying attention to the setting (if they aren’t paying attention to their setting that says something too, though) so you should be trying to get into the emotional mindset of what the characters are feeling. If you can’t relate to the characters emotions you might want to try changing the intent of what you’re going for. Once I find myself feeling exactly what they feel, getting into that mindset, it becomes really easy to paint the scenery not only for what it is but with that extra ‘umph’ of putting it through the words of personal eyes. That, I feel, is what turns something from simple visual fodder to keep the reader in the story to something that speaks and does far larger to the characters and to the story.

But that’s just my experience with setting, I’m sure other people have their own ways. Hope I helped, though, it can suck to feel stuck. Good luck with your projects! I’m sure you can handle it.

WOW everyone here has GREAT ADVICE AND I REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT. I’m fairly new at taking writing seriously and kind of want to do it as a career (instead of some cringe worthy fan fictions that I wrote lol) so this advice is GREAT. A Slump Session of Depression #5

Hey guyths. (lol) im really sad rn. like a make these little sessions for when i’m feeling down, but rn is one of my lowest points of the year. (yes even lower than dropping out of school). I was out with my mom and my mom gets mad SO QUICKLY and if your thinking “well lol so is my mom. she aint special” no your mom might be MOM crazy but, MY MOM???? loco. anyways i always tread very lightly around my mom so i dont make her upset. i’ve been doing that all my life and you would think i would have all her ticks but there’s a new one every fucking day. So i’m driving and she wanted to stop at the store,so i pull in to the store parking lot. So i’m saying i’ll wait in the car while she goes to the store and she goes off. “why so you have an attitude?” “ You’re being annoying.” “ stop being a little bitch.” “ take me home.” so im telling her that im staying quiet and stuff so i dont make her upset and she’s like. “ its not working. your annoying. stop acting like a little bitch and take me home.” Then i said ok lets go into the store then and she got out the car like nothing happened. and when she was done we got in the car and it was quiet. Now this isn’t anything new. Me and my mom get into arguments like this (aint really an argument it’s her getting mad at me then me doing anything in my power to make her calm down.) like once a week. but this one just made me go “I’m done.” she only does this shit to me now because. (it’s bout to get personal but no one reading this lol) my dad doesn’t live with us anymore.my twin brother doesn’t talk to her, my other brother moved out also and doesn’t really talk to her unless it’s a holiday. So it’s really just me because she knows im not going to stop talking to her or respond or anything because i live in her house, i cant move out, and because im her daughter. There’s alot of people in my life that talk to me a certain way, or act a certain way because they know i wont respond. But it just hit me (my dumbass lol) that my mom is doing it too. and that hurts :( Also. my twin brother doesnt have a job or go to school and he doesn’t leave his room and that’s so unlike him and my mom’s (being my mom) reaction to this was kick him out. which, okay. like if you’re not paying rent or in school my parents get pissed which is understanding. but this isn’t something my brother does AT ALL and it really scares me. and my parents think it’s because ive dropped out of college which really hurts me. like i think about that alot. :( and i kinda feel that. sorry it’s getting really sad. and what hurts me the most was that he wont talk to me. We’re twins. we tell each other everything. and he’s lying and this isn’t like him. everyday i try to help him get a job but he tries to get out of it every time. Also i don’t even trust my dad 100%.
