ATEEZ ⯠BAD MV SONG MINGI
Stray thoughts about minhwa Trouble Maker
TLDR: they deliberately fucked with gender and in doing it they sent a big āfuck youā to whoever wants to cage them in a particular role.
Disclaimer: as per usual, being a meta reading of a performance this enters the realm of rpf and is just my personal opinion. Iām not trying to state some truth, Iām just trying to explain why this performance blew my mind.
So, my brain is still stuck there. I got those damn 3 minutes and spares on loop all day long since day 1 of the fanmeeting. I got that whistling haunting me.Ā
Because it was hot as fuck? Sure.
Because it made one of my favourite pairings finally a hot topic once again? Also sure. Love it.
Because Mingi pulled off some ballroom dance moves with a proficiency that left me mesmerized? (And I dare some other male idol to top that tbh) Oh yeah, hell yeah. I love the way he dances and once again he showed us heās great at it.
Because the vocals were something else and I need KQ to release the studio version of them so I can bask in them? All the yes, they exceeded my wildest dreams.
Because for the first time someone in a boy group did an actual cover, full on performance, of Trouble Maker and not a parody of it for shit and giggles? Absolutely. Fucking finally.
But also because of the gender fuckery it was going on, and I donāt mean it in general, but in relation to Mingiās and Seonghwaās idol personas. Imho they made a statement with this performance about themselves and gender stereotypes, a really bold and loud one, and I didnāt think I could appreciate them more than I already did, and yet.
Think about it. They subverted the expectations the fans might have had for them if they knew beforehand about the performance. No really, think about it.
Mingiās stage persona, FixOn, is the representation of the stereotypical fuckboy alpha male imaginary. We all know itās drag, we all know itās part of the performance and that Mingi is so much more multifaceted than that, still, since his stage persona fully developed, he never performed as anything other than that (aside from Mingi Wonka, but that too is not a feminine persona), so a lot of fans are prone to forget it, even if he has always been vocal about being different from his stage persona, both in pop lives and formal interviews.
On the other side, Seonghwa loves to fuck with gender becasue the male stereotypes are too limiting for him, we all know it because he said it himself, and he fucked with it so much that by now a lot of fans cast him by default in a female role (think about the pronouns used for him on socmeds and so on), but the point is that Hwa loves to fuck with gender, so I think that just as he doesn't like not being able to express himself beyond the classic male stereotype, he doesn't like being caged only in the female one either, finding it restrictive.
I understand why Seonghwa told Mingi heād take full responsibility of the falldown with the fans if things were going to go sideways, because they literally took all the preconceptions and stereotypes the fans projected on them and threw them in their faces and that, in a job that relies on fans approval, is brave and bold as fuck.
That wouldnāt have been the message if they took the parody way like everyone did before them in fanmeets, but they performed Trouble Maker as intended instead, delving deep into their characterās roles and portraying them with a level of perfromanship that left me in awe. And that is what makes the performance a big āfuck youā to whoever wants to cage them in a predefinite role. And thatās why I have so much respect for them.

The way Hongjoong pretended to collapse after lifting San - my dramatic squirrel!! Also, my HongSan crumbs!
Hi! We donāt know each other and you can toss this in the trash if Iām out of line (and donāt feel like you should answerāactually maybe please donāt answer), but I saw your tags and just in case this is helpful for you to hear: I donāt think what Yunho said about Trouble Maker is as terrible as itās sounding to some peopleās ears in summary form.
I wrote about it rant-style here but that was just my own screaming into a pillow and not meant to be screaming at anyone. The long and short of it is he seems to want credit for the idea of doing Trouble Maker (in any form) but he never said he could or wanted to do what Hwagi ended up doing. A bit silly because who cares about the source of the idea, but not the delusionally jealous desire to upstage that it could be twisted into.
You are so kind. I know we don't know each other and I can totally ignore the ask and keep being pissy about Yunho but the ask has good intention and Ateez deserves great fan like you so do you mind if I give you a rant? Please note that I was also, screaming into my pillow at 3am when I was putting in the tags.
Disclamer: this is a total vibe-based, personal rant. I have no solid proof and simply run things of my memory, bias and reasons.
First, Yunho keeps entertaining the what-if. He goes on lives to talk about Woosan's chanel and talks about what if they have a Yungi one too. I don't understand his intention. Thinking about the thing is not doing the thing. Talking about the thing is not doing the thing. Only doing the thing is doing the thing. I would love to see all the Yungi content he is entertaining about, but will he actually do it? I dont think so.
That leads me to the Troublemaker idea. Yes, who cares the source of the idea. Idea is just idea until somebody realizes it. And that person, this time, is not him. It is just not him. The fact that he mentions who comes up with the idea at all throws me off so bad. I am a fan, one of the audiences. I want entertainment. I want good entertainment. Frankly, I only care about who can deliver the great performance. I do not have the need to know the logistics behind all this. Being enivous or jelous is not a bad thing. They are like, normal human being feelings. What icks me about this is what he is doing about his feelings. Why do I need to know he just handed over his brilliant idea for his teammates? What can I do about it? What does he want his fans to do about it? He is the one who does his job, not me.
What pisses me off even more is that I sincerely believe he could pull this off. He has the skills, the talents, the looks, and they are not going where I wish it could be and goddamn I was freaking pissed. I have been shown multiple times he could be so so so good but not this time in particular. I want him to win too but for some reasons he keeps fading into the background? There is not a single moment of him from the recent fanmeeting that makes me feel anything anymore. I want to see him but he keeps freaking hiding. Wdym my shiny beautiful and pink oh so pink boy is almost invisible? Of course I would be mad.
God, stanning should not be this serious you know. I just want hihihaha at the end of a working day, turn my phone off and go to bed. But no, I must have so much thoughts and opinions about some guys on my phone screen. Absurd, dont you think?
Anyway, the last thing (?) pisses me off is that he does not seem to know what to do for himself, as an individual? as a solo performer? I know Ateez is a group, but the group can only last for so long and then, he will need to do something for just himself. Like, what does Yunho the performer/ artist want to do?! The new video of BBT crew compares him to like, high-tech vending machine is not the most flattering compliment you can give to someone like Yunho, I think. Really, who on earth would have a favorite vending machine? People come to vending machine for effiency, convenience, got the job done in 10 seconds flat, not to experience, not to remember, in other words, reliable but forgettable.
Yeah so I need Yunho to hurry the fuck up.
Yunho said before the fanmeeting setlist was decided, he thought that if he did end up in a unit, he'd definitely want to try performing Trouble Maker. He originally suggested the idea of performing it and he originally envisioned doing it with Mingi or Seonghwa! Eventually, the units were decided and it ended up being Mingi x Seonghwa.
I'm gonna be thinking about this all week. So many possible scenarios here...Yunho doing the Hyuna role with Seonghwa would be amazing, but I don't know if he'd be able to fully commit.
With Mingi, he'd be at war with his mind and heart (and libido).
@neither-blue-nor-green pretty much nailed it...
Much to ponder.
(deeep breaths, keep cool, you just said it first and got credit) *clears throat*
As others have pointed out, there's a danger that Yunho as Hyuna would have veered into caricature. Like with guard!Yunho doing the Chanel thing for the reaction, while Mingi's joy visibly came from the performance. I might be too mean to Yunho, but that's our dynamic ā®(Ėš·Ė)ā RN I'm sitting here laughing and pointing at our pouty puppy being jealous
SEONGHWA & MINGI 'TROUBLE MAKER' Cover 260719
i am gonna be a bit of a bitch and like. look i love yunho even though I also really like to kick him when hes down, but i dont like this thing he does when he goes live to be like 'i should do the youtube thing with mingi' or 'i was the one that came up with trouble maker' like.. its not a good look, babes.
because on one hand, I would be really interested to see yunho do trouble maker, but when when he reenacted it with wooyoung, it just kinda showed me why he couldn't. he would've made a parody of it, the way boygroups have done for years. i dont mean this negatively, but its always been a skit or a bit when boygroups do trouble maker with other guys?
and i think one of the amazing things about hwagi trouble maker is that it takes these two performers, whose skill is performance above anything else, and they took it seriously and did it with sincerity. it takes a generous partner to both give the hyuna part to someone else, and it takes a lot of trust to DO the hyuna part and put faith in that your partner isnt going to make fun of you for doing it.
the POINT is that mingi was the least expected to do hyuna, and that he took it seriously with his tallness and broadness and deep, low voice. and seonghwa took him seriously as it, and understood that the point was that mingi was taller than him, broader than him, and therefore didn't met mingi with any posturing to emasculate mingi in order to go 'no homo!!!'.
i really dont know if anyone else could've done it like them, and i am pretty pissy about yunho kinda nakedly being like 'i shouldve been the one' because sorry babe. it wouldnt have been the same.
