brothers in arms, they never wavered from the other. they are a team; unstoppable and infallible, yet strong in their convictions. they are one in the same, alike in so many things but different in souls && voice. where one is heard, the other is silent. yet, where one is silent, they are never for long. it is a never ending system of support, their shared pain && grief, their shared innocence ( however rare that may be ) && shuttered lives always being held. for they have each other. they are brothers, things of war. they are soldiers && they are men.
okay but
There is a CONSTANT eb && flow that creates Ahsoka’s strong ability to adapt to the situation to handle it with FLAWLESS CREDIBILITY. She is the sea, TIDES coming in && flowing out, change coming && going with each crash of the wave against her blue && white chevrons — she is ever learning. Ever GROWING. Adjustments to feeling Cody’s Force Signature had been made as she felt the growing fear ( it settled into the pit of her own stomach ) && was quick to ease the tension. Kindness was something that a soldier was not acquainted with very well && it’s what Ahsoka was good at giving — especially to comrades. Cody would always have that from her, given he deserved it, which she hoped, would be always.
They have a language of their own, the brothers, that she does not UNDERSTAND. Part of her ( deep inside ) wishes that she could be a part of that, too, but it was not her place, it would NEVER BE HER PLACE for she was a Commander && they just the ( TOY ) soldier ; especially in the eyes of the Republic. She could never be anything more than a commanding officer, a friend maybe, but the line was drawn there. She wished it were drawn somewhere else.
❛ Sometimes I forget that I can’t say those kinds of words… especially around my Masters but I hear them all the time, from Fives mostly, and think to myself —- ‘Soka, one of these days you’ll be able to say what you feel without being reprimanded. Guess today ’s that day. ❜
More is expected of her, of an up && coming JEDI, of a young lady who should never say such words. But then again, young ladies, YOUNGLINGS should not be forced into a war they have no responsibility for. The Jedi were not founded on the ideals of leading soldiers into battle, no, they were there for PEACE which Ahsoka often found seldom of. This was not [ THE WAY ] to achieve all they had fought for ( SO MUCH FIGHTING ), and she didn’t know if there would ever come an end to it all.
Sienna hands, with dulled fingernails ( she has to keep them filed down ; Togrutan’s had CLAWS ) grasp onto the hook that is situated above her shoulder, as their descent begins to where she knows their mission will begin.
❛ Suppose we’ll both be learning then. The last time I was considered a civilian was when I was a baby, but that didn’t last long. Master Plo found me && took me to the Temple. After that I was simply an acolyte ready to be trained. This will be good, though — or at least I think it will be. ❜
Leaving out the fact that she was orphaned seemed to be a good idea — no one needed to know about that. And no one did.
He listens, head bowed slightly as if in conference to a battle plan in the works. It is in his nature; war in his blood. Fingers already itch for his weapon, already tighten their grip upon the hook as if he were falling to his end. It is like this every deployment, every mission. This thing he refuses to call anxiety, refuses to admit as anything. He is calm, yes. He is ready to see what this mission will bring, what being passive in and active war is truly like. Yet his bones ache at the knowledge that brothers are not so lucky, && that there will be less when he returns. There are battles to be won, death to be had. Nervousness, excitement they are replaced with a guilt he refuses to give light to, the feeling he makes sure cannot metastasize. It fractures the armour he calls skin, chills the ammunition set firmly into his bones, and stirs a cry inside his blood. It is for the good of the Republic, him unable to reach the others. He will be as if he were any other innocent in this war. He will not be who he is. He listens, ready to fight && claw && bite. He is a wild thing, yet the guilt does not stop the slight relief growing in the spaces of his borrowed code. It is there, he knows it is, slowly becoming acceptable. He can shed his armour in this. He can become someone, something, new. He listens as a weapon, but knows he will taste the freedom his brothers die for.
( he will live another day; a promise rarely seen in his life. he revels in it, if only for a moment. ) ‘ Is that how the Jedi work? Taking children before they can see their own families? That’s like forcin’ me away from Rex, my men all of ‘em. Seems a bit harsh, if you ask me. ‘ It takes him only a moment to clear his throat, eyes downcast as he realises the boundary he had crossed. Hand tightens once more, until armour sets fire in his skin, his arm && he allows it, as any soldier should. ‘ Pardon the question, ma’am. Just curious and all. We don’t get much info on you Jedi. You can understand my, ah eagerness, ma’am. ‘ The conflict begins once again inside of him, heart and soul aching as he returns to the tool-to-be-used creature he is known as. Formality sounds strained, foreign to a voice only moments ago so carefree. It is always the outside, he knows, that he works the hardest on. For others can see him as a capable commander, while on the inside a war is waged. That is all he can do, all he is made to do. War && death && guilt. ( he blames the sinking feeling inside of him on his lack of civilian training. ) A deep breath is taken, shoulder slumping slowly as his war comes to an end within. The mission comes first. He can relax. He can become a man untouched by blaster fire and immeasurable loss. He can forget that, on the outside. He can. He will. He has to. ‘ What I mean to say is it just sounds odd. The Jedi talk about peace, unity. I overheard the general once discussing somethin’ about how bonds are important. Then why split up a family? I have mine just as anyone else should have theirs. Seems like somethin’ the seppies’ll do, not the Jedi. Not the people I fight alongside with. Seems too cruel to be them. That’s all. ‘
i’m just curious

he, often, has very good GUT FEELINGS. though, perhaps that needs to be rephrased. obi-wan’s INSTINCTS were heightened & his SENSES to the world around him & those around were more TUNED. he had a FINELY TUNED gut feeling, but that did not make it GOOD. because this — this was FAR BEYOND good. this was SINKING this was CONSUMING DREAD.
splitting up was REASONABLE, they covered more ground, but he knew it to be more DANGEROUS. nothing they hadn’t handled, though. nothing they COUDLN’T DO or hadn’t done before. he had the UPMOST FAITH in his commander to lead this — but he knew things were always able to turn DREADFUL at the blink of an eye. what was in the PAST did not define the FUTURE & this was no exception now. his FAITH remained but he is SHOT with this sinking & thinks … this time is DIFFERENT.
he can IGNORE, though. he is GOOD at IGNORING. he ignored many of his gut feelings. he had to. if he focused on EVERY gut feeling he had then DUTY would be a SECOND CHOICE & as a JEDI this wasn’t something he could not allow. he doesn’t REACH OUT to this instinct until he has a FLEETING moment of time; a small GAP in this fight that he would be SURE to utilize.
arm RISES towards him & he TAPS the device there. it SINGS with a ring then it is only a matter of WAITING ( h o p i n g ) for REPLY. seconds are STRETCHED in this waiting. his eyes NARROW at the device as his thoughts linger BACK to the sinking. the small amount of TROOPS around him engage in CHATTER but obi-wan’s hearing is focused INTENTLY on the SILENCE that faces his from his comm. it’s becoming TOO LONG of a wait until —
a crackle. a SPARK of an answer from the other side. brows rise & his lips are OPENING to form a NAME but before anything leaves his own mouth he is greeted by something ELSE. a CHOKED OUT, depressing confession that has his heart GIVING IN to the sinking. he EYES a trooper looking his direction & BREATHES deeply. CODY … it is LOW of him to admit that MOST he would know there is nothing to do about. MOST he would inform that they preformed valiantly & would be REMEMBERED. there was NOTHING more he could do, no VALIANT HEROICS he could commence for EVERY clone. but cody — he COULD NOT leave cody to DIE when there was a chance at SAVING his commander. it was not ATTACHMENT, that was too unjedi-like for him to call this, this was PRACTICALITY. it was PRACTICAL to have cody remain living. he had done well as a commander, one who had worked long & WELL at his general’s side.
swallowing, he replies. ❛ what is your position, cody? ❜ they had a SHORT WINDOW of time still. if he was fast, & HE USUALLY WAS, he could make it & his commander would LIVE another day.
The words that come through are unexpected, yet a tired smile falls upon his lips. Trust the general to always ask the important questions. Lips part to answer, yet there is a disconnect between words that want to be spoken and the noises that follow. They are strangled, demonic things that do not amount to much. He keeps trying though, keeps fighting the pull that of beyond death has upon him. He is so tired, so exhausted, and he wishes the pain will stop. Wishes to be free from this hell born into his bones. ‘ Northeast, sir ... Drop zone ... Four klicks out ... ‘ At least, that was where he last remembers fighting, watching his men be picked off one by one as the droids kept coming, endless in their capacity and strength. He would not give up, would not give his life to those freaks of a maddened mind. Even as he was the last to stand did he fight, and he remembers, if for a moment, why he now lays beneath the wreckage of the dropship. It was the only option left to get the job done. He drew them towards him, the army before him trapped as he sacrificed his only means of escape. It worked well enough, the seppies thrashed beneath the exploding metal, crushed just as he is now. He was caught in the crossfire, unintentional but needed all the same. It was a calculated risk, he remembers, but then lips go slack and he loses time, the stars welcoming him like a second home. He does not know how much time passes before he reawakens, but his comm is still active. He laughs this time, head spinning and eyes no longer able to stay open. He blinks once or twice before they fall closed in what feels like a permanent goodbye to the night around him. Yet the laugh is bitter and scalded with the hot taste of blood within his throat, the last true vestiges of his strength going into the effort of talking. He needs to keep talking, keep the comm open. There’s a chance, so small and meaningless it almost makes him weep, but it’s there. It’s there and it’s real and General Kenobi is on the other side. He can fight through this. But he is so, so tired. What he wouldn’t do to sleep. ‘ Sir, there’s a large ... large amount of debris ... that should, ah ... should help ya’. ‘
In my life I had no other choice than to become a strong person.

‘ You gonna shape up or what? ‘ There’s a grunt or two mixed in his sentence, arms crossing over armoured chest in an obvious sign of disgust. He doesn’t stand at attention as he does with others, trying to get the point across that he does not respect this man before him. Not yet, at least. Generals Skywalker and Kenobi, Commander Tano, even Captain Rex have all earned his respect. This one, even if he is a Jedi, has nothing. ‘ Are you even listening? ‘

It is subtle, but Ordo recognizes the change in the other man. It’s a hunger. Oh, he had misjudged Cody. And that only makes his answer easy, so quick he nearly verbally steps on Cody’s apology.
‘ On one condition: you drop this leverage business. Simply put if you ever find yourself in my position, with a brother asking you to teach him, you’re gonna do it. ’
Ordo does not begrudge Cody’s desire to have something to set him apart. It’s a human desire, amplified many times over in an army of men identical down to the genes. However, Ordo will not allow him to withhold from their brothers what, should they want it, is theirs by rights. Perhaps, he could convince him the merits of a teaching position. Perhaps. Until then…
‘ It’s a practical concern. Mando’a isn’t very difficult, as far as languages go, but like any tongue, it’s harder to retain when you’re talking to yourself. And there’s no point in knowing a language no one else speaks. I don’t think you plan on talking to me all the time. You must’ve noticed I’m no conversationalist. ’
Speaking of practical concerns, there are many. He takes a deep sip of his caf, his eyes focused on something faraway and invisible as he sorts through them all. The measure of his voice sounds as serious as it would planning a military op. This, in its way, is that serious. He will give Cody whatever pieces he can of the heritage denied him.
‘ You must’ve also noticed I’m not a patient man. I may not make much of a teacher. And there’s the problem that neither of us have a lot of free time. We are, Commander, fighting a war. ’
Eyes look to the side in something akin to shame, a small frown etching across his face. He knows he was being selfish, yet to be called out, so to speak, makes him all too aware of how that had seemed. He is a commander, always looking out for others && making sure their lives are just as valued as any one else’s. He is the figure of selflessness and action; a soldier who has been bred and trained to make sure their lives matter, especially those taken in this war. To have some form of leverage, to have some form of anything, anything at all, that separated him It sounded impossible. He shakes his head slightly, a chuckle leaving him as he continues his internal debate. Yeah, impossible. His brothers deserve whatever he has. He’s said that since day one, since he met those serving under his command. To revert to something so greedy && selfish is to undermine his character, his DNA. ( and another chuckle is given at his own choice of wording. ) ‘ Who said I wouldn’t be talking to you? You’re an interesting man. Not one I can say I fully understand, though you have gotten a thing or two of my respect. But I ... see your point. Doesn’t matter. I wanna learn and you can teach. If any of my brothers wanna learn it to, that’s fine. Simple enough solution. ‘ Back straightens again, trying to place itself into that state of perfection needed and expected for one such a him. The other’s voice sets that principle into action, hands now leaving the caf and instead placing themselves onto the table. They clutch at it not it anger, excitement, or nervousness, but in the trained response to intimidate, their grip pushing him up just slightly. Gaze snaps to Ordo, and lips are forced into a thin line. It’s a transformation in and of itself, one Cody knows is quite often described as terrifying. Though that’s usually the Shinies. ‘ We have time now. Besides, I know all about this war. If a soldier can’t have something to keep his mind off of it, then he’s gonna go mad. We all need a vice mine, preferably, is less destructive than most. Everyone needs somethin’. And I’m choosin’ mine right now. I know what this war costs. Trust me when I say I’m not a stranger to separation before. Rex && I have a lot of stories about that one. Promise. ‘ He remains where he is, body still retaining that commander attitude. He doesn’t speak for a few beats until hands return to his drink, a smirk at the end of his lips. ‘ We’ll have time when we time. We’re soldiers. But it doesn’t have to be war all the time, yeah? That’s why we stick to our brothers. Keeps us sane most nights. And I’m gonna stick to you. When we can, of course. No harm in that, is there? ’
