Thanks! A lot of people have been asking for this, so here it is... the Dave and Mom post.
Similar to Bro and Rose, I imagine their personalities compliment each other a little better than the original duos. Dave is more chatty and vulnerable, and Mom is the same. As a single mother she feels she can push some responsibility onto her doting son, who is very receptive to anything she says. If he does resist, he's just quippy and that's very easy to push past. This shared sense of humor also helps them collaboratively enjoy things such as her wizards, eccentric decor, and gifts. He is so into Maplehoof. Their relationship is much more light hearted.

Mom does serious work in private, and hides this from Dave, which is why she is often inebriated. She is positive that keeping secrets and pretending to be happy is the best form of parenting, and goes way overboard (huge gifts of course, playing dress up with him, downplaying conflict, or feeling guilty for downplaying conflict and then doing a full 180 and coming across as condescending instead of sympathetic. We know how she can get.) . Dave would benefit from a serious conversation once in a while.... Sooo yea that can get annoying, but he isn't even sure HE knows he wants! So whatever.
In all honesty there's not much more too it, since Dave doesn't really hold grudges. And frankly, if he could hardly bring himself to hate Bro I can assure you he would not find it in him to hate Mom. If anything, she needs something to love and he needs to be loved. Tell me you wouldn't take cleaning up your mother's spills over getting beaten up by your brother any day? ... I guess when you put it like that it sounds sort of boring for a little boy. Boring until he asks for the next best video game console, that is!
