MyĀ interpretation of Beauty and the Beast:
Iām getting really tired of hearing people complain about Beauty and the Beast, and saying that Disney is condoning bestility.
The entire movie is a metaphor!
The beast is not an animal, but a man with an ugly personality, an ugly attitude, an ugly perspective on things.Ā
The castle workers arenāt furniture pieces, but actual people, actual workers, but the beast views them as object, possessions since they live in the castle, since they work for him - he can tell them to do anything he pleases!Ā
He holds Maurice because Maurice was on his property, his land; and anything on the beastās land is his.Ā
When Belle comes around and offers herself in her fatherās place, he tries to control her like he does his castle workers; when she doesnāt, she starts testing his patience. But eventually, she begins to grow on him, not without a few hiccups. Slowly, he starts to learn how to have fun, to be gentle, to be patient, etc.Ā
She teaches him to be civil, to be a person, a decent person.Ā
She teaches him how to take care of things, people; teaches him to love.Ā
And he realizes it at the end of the movie - what itās like to love - and to be loved.Ā
It makes him feel human, and be human. Ā Suddenly, heās seeing things in a different light, a different view- castle workers are no longer objects, but people; the castle is no longer an unwelcoming, dreary place, but a home; Belle is no longer an annoyance to him, but a beautiful heart.Ā
And the enchantress that cursed him? A woman he had given all his heart to, and she went and broke it. The description of her appearance? His petty way of trying to hurt her feelings.
He was never aĀ ābeastā but an ugly heart.
