This is my writing blog!!!

Everything was getting a teensy bit confusing on my main, so poof here’s to organization (finally)!

Actual stuff about this blog under cut :)

I have a heck lotta stories and also a heck lotta fanfics, but my biggest one is The School of Love and Magic*, which is currently under a full rewrite and reconstruction. Here’s the new premise:

Elena Archer’s a girl born with incredible mastery of ferrokenesis. This type of mastery earned her the title of Enchantress. She resides at a boarding school for magic. The school is one of the only magic systems in the world that runs completely on one type of magic. Their magic is called loiw.

When her first year of 9th grade starts, she gets a new roommate named Takka Reyes. He sucks at everything. He also claims that “he isn’t usually this bad”. Elena has no reason to believe him and therefore doesn’t. She probably should, though. There’s something wrong with the magic.

- I know a parent shouldn’t have a favorite child, but… yeah his name is Takka he’s the cinnamon roll on my pfp

- I made a concept AU where no one dies and it’s pretty fun, 10/10 would recommend

- When this was just another concept put on paper, I made a stupid space pirate named Jacques to appear once and never again. His boyfriend is now the main antagonist and he is very very important

also i’m curious, what’s been your favourite part of your story to write so far? is there a particular character or theme that stands out, or any specific scenes? i’m just curious as i think it can reveal a lot about a writer :)

Oh, it’s definitely Elena and Takka’s friendship. Their personalities are practically opposites, and they clash a lot at the start. Though, as the plot pushes forward, their values begin to match and their personalities become complementary.

I just think their dynamic is so cute in every phase— it’s how I cope with everything else lol (everything else that was wholly my fault and choice but um). Friendships are always my favorite thing to write, and I love making characters choose between their best friends and goals~

I literally haven’t written that part in this story yet because I can’t choose either. Their values AND love for each other are too strong and I love that.

The magic system in my books basically works because atoms interact with each other, and I just now realized that it should work differently on different planets.

So there's probably a period of time where a planet-transfer magic user has to relearn magic in order to live on their new planet.

Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

Takka but he'd share it with Elena and- actually here's a small scene

As I enter my dorm, I hear some chewing sounds. I suspect it's Wendy again. "Takka, your rat's chewing on the power cables," I call.

No response, except for a rustling sound where I suspect Wendy is hiding- in the crack between Takka's bed and his nightstand. The boy himself is most likely outside. I roll my eyes and walk towards the chewing sound. Why I have to care for my roommate's rat is beyond me. "Wendy, you'd better-"

I meet a pair of deep brown eyes. Wendy has red ones. Obviously it's not her. No, it's Takka, and he's sitting in the corner of our room, gnawing like a dog on... a blue stick.

"What are you doing?" I'm incredulous.

"Shark Brick," Takka answers mid-chew. "Want a bite?" He offers me the stick and looks at me expectantly.

"N-" Actually, the Shark Brick looks pretty good. I've always wanted to feel the thrill that dogs do when chewing on bones. "Fine."

I take a bite. I was right. The Shark Brick tastes amazing. It has a pretty good texture too. I wish I were a dog. Then I could experience this daily.

Takka beams from his spot on the floor, and I sit down as well, still chewing on the blue stick.

"This is amazing," I tell him.

Takka grabs the other end and starts chewing as well. "I know," he says.

Five minutes later...

The door to our door opens. Probably Lillian. She's the only other person who has a key. I keep chewing on the Shark Brick. It's really that good. My jaw is tired, but my mind forbids me from stopping. I don't care.

Lillian scans the room and spots us in a matter of three seconds. She smiles, but I barely get to see her dimple before her expression changes to disgust. "What the fuck are you doing?"

Takka and I continue our relentless gnawing.

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.

adding to this. the probabilistic framing is great but there’s another layer: fiction is working under serious time and space constraints. grief in real life might look like eating cereal at 11pm and forgetting to answer texts for a week. you don’t always have a week. so characters end up doing things that are statistically rare but emotionally efficient, and that’s not bad writing, that’s compression. the name-dropping dialogue thing is still a crutch though, because it’s not compressing anything, it’s just substituting for actual voice work. heightened behavior = often necessary. heightened language = usually lazy.

Believe

“…and the battlegrounds, where we fight to the death. Well, not really, but I like to say so.”

“Aren’t tour guides supposed to give accurate information?” Takka asks.

“Aren’t you supposed to believe me?”

Run

“Takka,” I start. “Do you have—“

His cauldron fucking explodes. I have no clue how he managed it. Clearly, he messed something up.

“‘I don’t need help,’” I quote. “You can’t run from your problems, dude.”

Break

Arany unsheathes his sword. Hundreds of soldiers behind him do the same, yet I sense nothing.

I squint. The swords are sleek, polished so I can see the army’s reflections on the surface. There’s a yellowish tint to the white material, and as I take a step closer, it dawns on me.

Their weapons are all made of bone.

I only remember two facts about bone. The first is that teeth are made of bone. Useless fact, I know. The second is that bone is easier to break. Although I can’t disarm the army with a wave of my hand, we’re still at an advantage.

Rain

It literally never rains in SoLM so take this from (one of) my zombie story(s):

It’s pouring when we get back to The College.

Bennett sprints.

Everett rolls her eyes, shutting his door before driving the double-wagon to the entrance.

“Hey!” His voice calls. “You splashed me.”

“You ran headfirst into a rainstorm,” Everett states. “What was I supposed to do?”
