DS9 characters rated by how well you could name a dog after them.
(For simplicity reasons I am splitting this into two posts for surnames and first names, this is surnames, first names will follow)
Sisko: 10.0/10, it's got a nice sound to it, two syllables, good nickname potential, could work on any breed I think. People could get the reference but it's subtle enough to fly under the radar, just the right balance between generic and nice for my taste, perfect name for a dog
Kira: I mean it's a solid name, which is most likely the reason every second female dog (hyberbole) is called Kira, so like a 5.0/10. Beautiful name, but its abundant use putsits score that low. Sorry to all dogs named Kira, ownersof dogs named Kira, Kira (the character) enthusiasts and of course Kira herself.
Bashir: 3.2/10, Also two syllables, but just doesn't have that nice ring to it. I also don't really see it on a dog, maybe on certain breeds or mixes of certain breeds.
Odo: Good, distinct name. 7.9. Loses points because I once had a dream where a hybrid out of him and one of my teachers played the antagonist. Also, knowing Odo, I couldn't imagine this name on any long coated or stubby dog.
O'Brien: 8.7, Good name, breed versatile but especially fitting for like a working or active dog. Most likely going to fly under the radar.
Dax: 9.5/10, just one syllable but otherwise the same as Sisko, except for maybe being a tad more recognisable as a reference PLUS it's gender neutral.
Worf: 4.1/10, sounds a bit silly. Thematically fitting for a bigger dog, funny for a small one, but not in an out of place way. Reference is obvious, you have both tng and ds9 fans on your side.
Quark: 2.1/10. Please don't name your dog Quark.
Rom: 2.6. Better than Quark but not by much.
Nog: 1.8. Don't.
Leeta: 10/10. Cute, suuuper breed versatile, unique yet simple. Even more subtle than Sisko, I just love that name so so much.
Garak: 6.0/10. Sounds a bit like the sound a frog makes or perhaps a dog puking (Good name if the dog has a weak stomach) .Definitely more on the obvious reference side, but could very easily get nickname'd into Gary.
Dukat: 7.8/10 just by the sound of it, but what did the puppy do to deserve that???
Winn: 0.9, Sounds bad and there's no crime a dog could ever commit to justify this name as punishment.
