Hi! Vulcan here with lots of Star Trek headmates! I think I've talked about this before but in my star trek alterhuman discord server someone found The Society for Earthbound Vulcans a fan club from the 70's which consisted of a bunch of people taking on Vulcan names and identities. a prominent member wrote: "In fact, many people suspect I am Vulcan, and I never claimed to be human," "Because the Vulcan virtues we admire are so alien to the prevailing Earth culture, that we are unbearably attracted to the Vulcan culture. Because we seem to be 'Earthbound Vulcans.'" and "It is no secret that I consider myself half-Vulcan & half Darkovan."
The Silver Elves also mentioned Vulcan and Romulan Identifying individuals briefly in a questionnaire they made, counting us as a kind of elf/fae.
another in the server found Temple of Bajor, a blog by someone who began practicing Bajoran spirtuality in 2017 and goes by a Bajoran name/title!
in my experiences in Star Trek fandom it is actually really common to see alterhuman-like experiences that are just unlabelled. I see people talk about not feeling like themselves unless they do their eyebrows and wear pointy ears multiple times, and when I have confessed that I feel that way, usually at least one person tells me they feel that way too.
it is also common for people to identify themselves as a species (such as referring to themselves as Vulcans) in a way that could be roleplay or could be something else. I don't know and I don't tend to label these experiences.
my hypothesis is that the Star Trek fandom is actually too big for it to have formed as part of the otherkin community. basically, there are lots of us out there, but most already have their own spaces, spaces where it is accepted to talk about feeling like you should be a Vulcan, and so they have no need to look for the otherkin community?
I think this is something that has arisen independently in a number of different spaces. personsally I think this is because spiritually non-humanity is real in some way, but psychological kin could easily see this as it being a real, natural thing the mind can do in some way.
the otherkin community also has more fantasy-focused origins and inhabitants and so I think that's part of why. I thought I was an elf before I thought I was a Vulcan, for example. the community formed from fantasy fandom and so people from sci-fi media might not always see ourselves in it still.
I actually want to make that poll. I've started drafting it, but haven't done a poll like this before so I have been hesitating. I really want to poll these communities, however. eventually I will get it out 👍
