love it when two characters are obviously sherlock and watson parallels and are therefore forced into the weird platonic, vaguely romantic, soulmate but they actually like other people, but they are certainly not just friends, relationship that befalls all sherlock and watson variants. even the straight ones. you’re all doomed.

I know John still mourns Mary but honestly I see Mary ( her current role in the story ) as more of a manifestation of John's guilt.

Yes, Mary was a love intrest for John, but she was also someone John failed to protect.

While she is the most obvious example of this, there's been a few others John failed while actively working on a case (The Manager in The Dancing Men.) This has to have had at least some effect on Jonk, there's a difference between a decaying body, and the corpse of a man you were talking too less than a day ago.

TLDR; Mary is John's biggest failure, and a symbol for everyone else he's let down on the job.

sherlock holmes movie idea: by 1888, rumors (which are by then really only rumors) concerning the two bachelors still living in 221b have reached a new high. watson finds himself forced to invent a wife to fight the suspicions, which works for a while. except he's never seen anywhere with said alleged "wife".

one day, he's invited to a large public event related to medicine that includes a large dinner as well as a ball, to which watson knows he has to bring a woman. and so, holmes and watson set off to find a woman who'd be willing to play the part of mary watson. maybe this could make room to bring recurring characters into this - irene adler, violet hunter, any other female client of holmes. none of them is available, however, and watson finds himself on the brink of despair - if he doesn't show up with a wife, his and holmes' reputations are fucked forever.

what solution do they find? holmes disguises himself as mary. he's not at all like watson described her, but holmes says he can just chalk it up to wanting to preserve her anonymity. they dance. they kiss.

and watson finds that he wants nothing more than for holmes to be his "wife" (husband) in real life

can we actually just talk for a sec for the REAL possibility of johnlock in sherlock and co? now i MIGHT be sounding extremely delusional, considering joel has said that there will not be any canon romantic relationships within the main 3, but guys. it would make sense for him to say that even if, or especially if, johnlock were to be canon.

and like one thing i’ve noticed is the gradual build-up of yes, let’s call it what it is, romantic tension between sherlock and john. ever since the six napoleans, we’ve been getting so much consistent ‘what the fuck was that’s. we’ve gotten sherlock saying that he loves watson, we’ve gotten ‘it was worth a wound’, we’ve gotten insomnia buddies, sherlock tucking in john to bed, we’ve got THE ENTIRETY OF THE LAST EPISODE, i mean it’s genuinely feeling like a build up.

and im afraid it might culminate in one singular moment during the fall, where john realises exactly how sherlock is important to him, through the loss of sherlock.

I liked this moment. Holmes profusely apologizing for putting Watson's life in danger. "Upon my word Watson. I owe you both my thanks and apology. It was an unjustifiable experiment even for one's self and double so for a friend. I am really very sorry." Followed by Watson being touched by Holmes care and saying, "that it is my greatest joy and privilege to help you."
