((And yes, I'm aware that's a girl under that scarf. I picked the image when I first found it because it fit exactly with how I pictured Djinn, and so it's now canon that he has somewhat feminine features.))
Djinn waved an absent hand. “Because business is business, I suppose. If I don’t do any business, I lose profit having come here.”
"Then you should not have come," Námo shrugged, "It would have saved us both a lot of hassle," He dearly wished the woman would hurry up. He was loosing his patience.
"I go where desire calls to me, and there’s quite a lot of it here." He tapped his fingers irritably. "I do hope Moira is unharmed. I should not have let her go." He looked worried, or as worried as he ever looked, which, admittedly, wasn’t very.
They waited in an extremely awkward silence. Námo focused his attention on the door for most of it; should she come back with fëar- if she came back at all- they would not get far inside.
Moira, meanwhile, was utterly lost. And she was surrounded by cats. And she was sure she'd seen a spider. Today was not going well. Curse Djinn and his stupid pride. And curse Nemo or whatever his name was for not just asking Djinn to leave.

The teacup rattled a bit in its’ saucer as she set it down. She stood, folding the blanket neatly over the chair, noting with some amusement that her clothes were dry.
"Well…there’s no harm in asking, I suppose."
Moira gestured at the door again. “Go on. He doesn’t charge just to talk to him, and if you don’t like what he has to say, just say no. It’s as easy as that.”
What did she have to lose, really? And besides, she was curious about this whole genie business. Might as well go and see.
Steeling herself, she tiptoed over and slipped through the door.
Djinn was sitting with his hands steepled before him in what he hoped was a mysterious and broody way (in fact, it was fortunate that his face was covered because all it did was make him look constipated). He straightened and gestured to the empty chair across the table when she entered.
"Have a seat, my dear. You have been talking to Moira, I presume? And now you long to find out for yourself..."
((Going to come hang out on Djinn this afternoon to see if I can revive him a bit. Does anyone want a starter for then?))

"A genie…? Wait a minute, I’m not about to go and rub some bloke’s lamp, no matter how many of my wishes he can grant."
She might be homeless and starving, but she had her pride, damnit.
Still…what if Moira wasn’t pulling her leg? Stranger things had happened.
Moira laughed. She wondered if Estella had realized how her words sounded, but decided not to mention it. “You don’t have to rub any lamps. That’s only to summon him, and he doesn’t give out his lamp sequence anyway. In fact, best not mention the lamps anyway. He doesn’t like them. Says the gods who set that up had a lousy sense of humor.”
Estella gave a woman a strange look.
"You’re really not joking, are you."
Her mind went in a dozen directions. Wishes? What wishes did she have? Oh, too many to count, and nothing that she’d ever ask seriously for. They were too big and grandiose, she’d never be able to pay back whatever debt was asked of her.
Perhaps a small one? She didn’t have much to give, but she could cook and clean well enough. Maybe they’d let her work off the price of a small wish. Something reasonable like…new shoes. Or maybe, considering the weather, a good umbrella.
Moira shook her head with a smile. "That's what I thought, when I first wandered in here. It's really true- in fact, if you don't believe me..." She stood and moved over to the window, pulling back one of the curtains. Through the open door, it was still pouring down rain, but through the window... it was a sunny day. A bright sunny day. She let the curtain fall again.
"It's really real. Djinn is a genie. He sells wishes, and you're the only potential customer we've had come in today. You don't have to. It's entirely up to you. You can just stay out here playing with Chowder and chatting with me until the rain lets up. Or you can go talk to Djinn, and find out what it would cost to get your heart's desire." She shrugged. "Like I said, it's up to you."

"Er…of course." Estella blinked at her host’s sudden exit. Had she said something amiss? Perhaps he’d seen through her little white lie and wasn’t pleased about having a homeless urchin in his tidy shop. Her heart sank; if he called the police to come and remove her, things would go badly. She did have a record for petty theft, but sometimes it was the only way to find something to eat, and even then she only ever swiped food, never anything pawnable.
These were nice folks. They’d given her a blanket and a cup of tea and they had a kitten. But the odds wouldn’t be in her favor if they discovered a thief on the premises.
A weary sigh escaped her. At least she could be warm and out of the rain for a few more minutes. She finished her tea, leaned down to pet Chowder, and waited to be tossed out.
"Don’t mind him." Moira came back with a fresh cup of tea and a cup of her own as well. She sat down beside the girl. "He likes to appear mysterious and aloof. Good for business." She scooped up Chowder and poured a little of her tea into the her saucer, setting it before him. He lapped at it happily, purring the whole time. She tickled his ears and stared through the open doorway at the rain with a small, content smile on.
"I’m supposed to sit here and talk to you for a few minutes, dropping the odd vague hint about what sort of business we do, but never out and out saying. You’re supposed to get intrigued, and then as soon as I make an excuse to walk away, you slip into the back room to see for yourself. That’s how it usually works. Or at least-" She laughed. "-how he wants it to work. They’re supposed to be mysterious, but he can’t seem to get it right.”
"This…isn’t a curio shop and tea room?"
Well, well. Curiouser and curiouser, as the saying went. For a moment, she forgot her fatigue and her melancholy in favor of a growing sense of, yes, intrigue.
"What is it, then?"
"We-eell, it is a tea room. Not a curio shop, though, no. We only have the tea room so clients can have something to do while they wait to speak with Djinn. And it draws in a little extra money on the side."
She eyed Estella. "You are intrigued, aren't you?" She gestured to the door. It was a perfectly ordinary door. The paint was chipping from the handle and the lock wouldn't even click. "Behind the door, all your wishes can come true- if you're willing to pay the price. Master is a genie."

((For some reason Beru's posts aren't appearing on my dash. There are probably other people too, but that's the one that's brought my attention to it. Has anyone else had this problem, and can tell me how to fix it? I've already checked my settings and I've unchecked anything to do with safe-mode, before anyone suggests that.))

"Oh, that’s a nice change of pace, then.", she says, grinning under her niqab.
"Well, in this, We’re near to, but not actually in, Central Park, in New York City. It’s a nice enough place, I’d suppose."
"New York? Haven’t been there in awhile." He looked around. The last time he’d come to New York humans hadn’t quite worked out cars yet. "…Quite awhile. And to whom do I owe the pleasure, my dear?"
"Ah, I am Atiya."
She shrugs slightly.
"I like New York, it’s a nice place."
She smiles at him from behind the niqab.
"And who are you? And, if it’s not too rude, where are you from?"
He gave a flourishing bow. “I, my dear, am known as Djinn. I hail from the Great Starry Mountains and I have come to your world to peddle my wares.”
She inclines her head politely to him.
"That is an interesting name, indeed!"
She laughs softly.
"I am also very sorry, but I have no idea from where you hail, I’ve never heard of such a place."
Her eyes sparkle in amusement, before she adds, “Ah, but what then, are your wares?”
"Not my name," he said swiftly. "Merely an address. Never my name." There was a pause. "Ah... that would be wishes, my dear."

A nod of the sodden blonde head. “Yes, please. It’s very good.”
The tea had settled in her stomach like a little liquid campfire, thawing her right down to her poor aching feet. She snuggled into the blanket. For some reason, this place felt immensely comfortable.
It wasn’t often that Djinn actually made tea manually. He hummed softly to himself while he did, trying to make sure he had all of the steps right. In the corner, a little white kitten traipsed over to inspect their new guest. He sniffed her once or twice and wound around her legs, meowing to be petted.
Djinn shooed him away- ineffectually- as he brought the tea and handed it to the girl. He took a seat beside her with a cup of tea of his own. “I think you’re a bit more comfortable now. I am called Djinn.” He inclined his head slightly. “My assistant over there is called Moira-” Moira, now toweling up the water, raised her hands slightly in a cheery salute. “How may we address you?”
Nodding her thanks, she took a sip and sighed appreciatively. “Estella Callaghan. Pleased to meet you. Sorry again about the mess.”
The sight of the kitten brought a light into her eyes and she reached down to let the tiny creature sniff at her fingers. “And who is this little darling?”
"We call him Chowder." Djinn sighed. "He likes to inspect our customers personally, I’m afraid. I would think he wouldn’t want to get near you when you’re soaking wet but I suppose he felt it worth the risk. It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Callaghan. What brings you out in a deluge such as this one, may I ask?"
Granted a nuzzle from the tiny cat’s nose, she rubbed behind his ears. “Awww, such a sweet thing.” Her expression turned sheepish.
"I was out, and I…couldn’t get inside in time. The weather turned when I wasn’t looking."
The rather worn state of her clothes and the fact that it had been raining for some time would seem to belie this.
"I see." He watched her for a moment. She had quite a lot of desire coming off of her, and no doubt she had more than a few wishes that she would like granting. He hummed thoughtfully for a moment, then waved a hand. Moira came to join him, arms full of damp towels. "I shall be in the back, my dear. Please look after Miss Callaghan for me? Her tea is on the house. We don't charge for kindness here. My lady." He bowed politely, then spun on his heel and strolled off to the door at the back of the tea room. Moira snorted, amused.
"All right here while I dump these?" she asked. "Won't take a moment."
