Art creates pathways for subversion, for political understanding and solidarity among coalition builders. Art teaches us that lives other than our own have value. Like the proverbial court jester who can openly mock the king in his own court, artists who occupy marginalized social positions can use their art to challenge structures of power in ways that would otherwise be dangerous or impossible.

“My name is Ofelia. Who are you? - Me? I’ve had so many names. Old names that only the wind and the trees can pronounce. I am the mountain, the forest and the earth. I am… I am a faun. Your most humble servant, Your Highness..”

PJ Harvey by Seamus Murphy.
this is the first time the US deliberately hit assad regime targets, but it is the 7899th US military strike in syria. i’m sorry, but it is completely selective outrage that the same people who have promoted assad’s massacre and defended the US’s murder of defenseless civilians in their fake war-on-terror are now acting like they care for syrians’ humanity because a single air strike was aimed at bashar himself. this isn’t going to start any world war, and it isn’t going to hurt you. the only people it will hurt will be syrian, and not one of them will be bashar. the sympathy this is creating for assad may be just as bad as what it will mean directly for the syrian people. almost nobody giving their two cents on this actually cares about syrians. bashar will take this out on syrians and the same people condemning this strike will defend him then. i am so tired all of the time. i miss when half of the world didn’t know we existed. after all the years we spent pleading with the world to hear us, i wish we could just suffer in silence.
just last month trump authorized 400 marine ground troops in syria & killed hundreds in air strikes which included two against a school and a mosque. where was the world crying about syrian lives then. where were the cries of non-interventionism then. this is the equivalent of a slap on the wrist to assad, nothing is going to happen to him. the US has been occupying syria since 2014, thousands of innocents have been murdered as a direct result of its occupation. what has changed now? this is the best PR bashar could have been handed.
