And since it's autism acceptance month, I want to talk about masking.

When I'm not alone, it's pretty hard for me to just be myself 🫠

I always control everything in social interactions — the way I smile, the way I talk, the way I move. I must not forget to make eye contact (but not for too long), I must not stim in public, I must not talk about my hyperfixations... oh no, I'm being weird again.

All of this makes me exhausted very quickly.

Masking is the reason I need so much time alone. But without it I just don't fit anywhere.

I wish one day I will be brave enough to stop hiding who I am.

The beds-on-the-ceiling misunderstanding, rag-doll pointing, the sitting nook, bowl of mints. And the excitement, but also a slightly wistful tone as they realise they’ve never had a room to call their own before, and the full weight of responsibility of hosting visitors…
