hey just a heads up but even making the smallest comments on someones art style can have a negative impact on the artist (and no, this does not apply to people who draw fat characters skinny, whitewash characters, etc.)
im talking about comments that some people reblog art with that are along the lines of “the characters head is too big” to “this character looks like [insert random character here]” to “eh i feel like the art style could be a little better”
literally no one is benefiting from comments like those oh my god
sometimes….. artists are already going through a rough time about their art by being too critical and harsh on themselves, and even the smallest & simplest comments like those really dont help, like, at all.
well.. yes and no.
Formal art education is literally ‘draw this thing, then we’ll all sit around and point out all its flaws’
critique is how artists learn. The opinions of your peers and more experienced people are important. They can be a really valuable learning tool.
That being said! its not ok to go around and offer your harsh opinion on every piece you see! ask first! 'do you want critique on this?’ and respect when people say no.
Sometimes artists are done with a work, they know whats wrong with it, or want to move on or its a personal thing or wtev. Dont be a creep about it, respect boundaries!
And if they say ok? Samwich it, say something you liked or they did well, then something they can improve on, then something else that was good. 'The characters hair is well drawn. The pose seems stiff and a little unnatural. I liked the use of bright colors’
And be specific! nobody gets better hearing 'its bad’ or 'they look weird’ How? 'the proportions in the torso seem off’ or 'the colors blend together and make it seem flat’
Hearing negative things about your art sucks, but its a valuable way to learn, so instead of never saying anything bad lets learn to critique correctly so we can all grow as artists together!
