Nine things about being brought back from the dead

You will be cold

You will wake up screaming, you all do.

Your entire body will throb, the pain will eventually subside; being brought back is never a painless task.

Do not get up immediately, you will be nauseous and your body will need time to readjust to this realm.

Ask for more blankets, you will feel very cold.

You will not remember how you died, do not ask.

Do not ask the practitioner how they performed the ritual, this is considered bad luck and you will not last long.

Your loved ones will be ecstatic to have you back, consider this a blessing.

Thank the practitioner and let them be on their way, if they do not look you in the eye consider this a bad omen.

Hey! I hope this helps people who are having troubles with colouring. Please don’t be disheartened if you don’t get it right the first time. It’s normal. Really. Every artist/designer faces problems with colouring ^^, practice!

This tutorial uses the following codes/abbreviations/tools:

Lasso Tool is used to determine where you want to paint

Layer Mask Tool and Brush Tool are used to erase away unwanted parts of the painted portions 

Solid Colour Adjustment Tool is used to determine what colour you want to paint with

Colour Balance Adjustment Tool is used to further adjust the shade of colour

Levels Adjustment Tool is used to adjust the intensity/ brightness/ darkness of the colour

Colour Saturation Adjustment Tool is used to change hue, saturation and lightness of colours

Colour codes have 6 digits/alphabets. For e.g.: f7d4b1

Blending Mode refers to blending mode of that layer. For e.g.: Colour, Multiply, Screen etc

O refers to opacity of that layer. For e.g. 48% O = 48% Opacity

F refers to fill of that layer. For e.g. 40% F = 48% Fill

Should there be NO O or F, automatically assume 100% O and 100% F

(A) Colour of turtleneck: use “1. lasso tool” and draw over his turtleneck. Once selected, you should see dotted lines around his shirt. Click “3. Solid Colour” under adjustments and do the following

Colour: 0c145b; Blending Mode: Colour Dodge

(B) Colour of Face/Skin: Use the same method above, “1. lasso tool” to select his face –> “3. Solid Colour” under adjustments and do the following:

Colour: f7d4b1; Blending Mode: Colour; 48% O; 40% FColour: 7c4e35; Blending Mode: Overlay; 48% O; 40% FColour: c5a990; Blending Mode: Overlay; 54% O; 42% FColour: 815646; Blending Mode: Colour; 70% O; 76% F

After this, you can duplicate or hide any of the 4 layers above to adjust the skin tone, depending on your reference photo. Use the “2. Layer Mask Tool and Brush Tool” to make sure the paint covers ONLY his face and erase parts of the colour layer that cover his eyes. I added “4. Colour Balance” adjustment layer above the 4 layers to edit the colours. Leave this colour balance layer unclipped.

Midtones: Cyan Red: -25; Yellow Blue: +22

© Colour of Lips: Use the same method above, “1. lasso tool” to select his lips –> “3. Solid Colour” under adjustments and do the following:

Colour: df4364; Blending Mode: Colour; 63% O; 48% F

(D) Colour of Hair: Use the same method above, “1. lasso tool” to select his lips –> “3. Solid Colour” under adjustments and do the following. I also used the “5. Levels Adjustment Tool” to make his hair colour brighter.

Colour: b78662; Blend Mode: Colour; 100% O; 82% F

(E) Colour of Eyes + Contact Lenses: Google search “Colour Contacts png” for a pair of contacts that you like. Ignore the colour of the contacts. That, we can change later. focus on the patterns of the contacts. This is what I chose. Adjust the size of the contacts by selecting the contacts layer and press Ctrl+T (windows) /Command+T (mac). Use the “2. Layer Mask Tool and Brush Tool” to erase away parts of contacts that jut out of his eyes and erase the centre white of the contacts. Change the blending mode of the contacts:

Blending Mode: Linear Light; 100% O; 82% F

After this, go ahead and adjust the colour of the contacts to something you like. Use “6. Colour Saturation Adjustment Tool” to change the yellow contacts to blue contacts. That’s cuz I like cold blue contacts but you can choose whatever colour you want by sliding the “hue” bar.

Colour Saturation: -180 Hue, -80 Saturation, -12 Lightness

(F) Extras: Eye Shadow, Eye liner, Blush: I suggest that you do this when you’ve covered the above. These are just extra stuff that make subtle differences to the final product. They aren’t that important, lol. Use the “2. Layer Mask Tool and Brush Tool” to draw over his eyelids and cheeks like you’d do when applying makeup. 

Blush - Left cheek: Colour: 835957; Blend Mode: Overlay; 25% O; 60% F + Levels: 0, 3.26, 255Blush - Right cheek: Colour: 46050f; Blend Mode: Overlay; 64% O; 100% FEyeshadow: Colour: 4f3e2c; Blend Mode: Overlay; 42% O; 91% FEyeliner: Colour 352719; Blend Mode: Multiply; 49% O; 85% F

(G) Final Touches: use Tools 3 - 6 to change and further edit the colouring of the photo to suit your personal taste! :)

What's that keypad thing next to your tablet? It looks cool!

It’s actually a USB numpad that I reprogrammed to use as a Photoshop  hotkey/shortcut pad! There’s an entire tutorial here on how to do it. 

But I ended up doing this because with the way my work area is set up, it’s much easier to have all my shortcuts close to my left hand while I’m drawing with my right hand, instead of having to reach over to use the keyboard.

I bought the numpad at my local computer store on clearance for $6 (regular price was $10) and the sticker paper for $4 at Wal-Mart (it’s actually 8.5″ x 11″ shipping labels). The tutorial I provided above already has everything you need to make one of these keypads yourself, including the sticker files, so it only cost me $10 to make mine. Compare that to the brand name programmable hotkey pads (like X-Keys) that cost $100+!! 

It’s very useful and I highly recommend doing it if you find yourself frustrated with your work station (like having to reach over your tablet for your keyboard).

One thing I suggest tho that the tutorial left out, is that when you print the stickers out, make sure you put strips of scotch tape over the printed image before you cut them out, that way the ink won’t rub off from your fingers touching them on the keys all the time.

More Dæmon Questions

In HDM, the focus tends to be on the positive relationships between people and dæmons, but there must presumably be people who have bad relationships with them as well. People with dæmons who belittle them, ignore them, point out the worst in every scenario. Could that be how many mental health problems manifest in Lyra’s world? 

On a similar note, would hurting your own dæmon be a form of self harm? How common is it in relation to other kinds?

If a person with a dæmon had a dissociative identity disorder, would their dæmon change to reflect their different personalities? Or would the dæmon simply display different personality traits and names?

Do the dæmons of people with young mental ages ever settle? 

What is the youngest age at which a dæmon has settled?

Who names dæmons? I would imagine there must be a pool of names which are used specifically for dæmons, never for people. But who chooses them? Is it the parents? Or is it the parents’ daemons?

What is the largest form a dæmon has ever taken? In the books, they never seem to take inconveniently large forms, but is it possible for a dæmon to settle as, say, a shire horse or a killer whale?    

Do the personality traits associated with dæmon forms vary by culture? For instance, some parts of the world view dogs as loyal and friendly, but others see them as dirty and dangerous creatures. Is it possible that two incredibly different people could have the same kind of daemon, because the form represents different things in each culture?

Are there laws against touching other people’s dæmons without permission? Is it treated in a similar fashion to sexual assault?

Which dæmon forms are the most discriminated against? What unfair stereotypes do different forms carry? 

How true to the animal are dæmon forms when it comes to biology? Do snake dæmons see in infrared? Do bird dæmons have magnetoreception? Can the humans share in these sensations to some extent, and does this make them better suited to certain jobs? Imagine police officers with dog dæmons that can follow scent trails.
