A Year and A Day: Day 4
Day 4 is about questioning your path. Really wondering why this journey was chosen.
I am exploring the Wiccan path because I was looking for something that seemed right for me. I’ve always been drawn to things within this spirituality and I finally see it. I asked the world what was right for me and then the Wiccan path seemed to jump out at me. It feels right. It feels like I’ve known this all my life, though I only began learning about it a short while ago.
My previous spiritual practices were not much to talk about. I was raised Catholic and I on and off put my effort and faith into it and never got much out of it anytime I tried. I just don’t think it was right for me.
I never considered Wicca before just recently; and my previous background didn’t lead me to it either. It seems to me that Wicca found me rather than the other way around. However I think that my own personal belief system brought me here and I’m quite glad for it.
I really hope to attain more knowledge about the world and the energies that reside in everything around me. I’ve always felt it and now I want to interact with it. I want to find confidence in my beliefs.
I only have one real fear while I embark on this path. I love my mother and my family dearly, and they are all Catholic. I know my mother might eventually come around to accept it, but I fear telling her. I don’t want her to assume the worst in me when all I’m trying to do is be my best self.
I am unsure of how I am going to handle situations where they don’t approve of my path. I have a few friends who are aware, as well as my boyfriend and sister. My boyfriend didn’t react badly, he told me that he himself at one point thought it was right for him but he found his true path to be with Buddhism. He told me to be careful because he believes some of the Wiccan ways to be “cookey” and he doesn’t want to see me become some sort of antivax, crystal-heal-all, witch that won’t see a doctor or something. I firmly believe in the sciences and trust what can be proven. I assured him I wouldn’t change in such aspects. He has given me full support. My sister has given me her support as well and has sworn her secrecy until I chose to reveal it to my mother. She won’t handle it well and will try to tell me it’s the devil and the demons and whatever other evil thing she can think up to tell me it’s wrong. I feel I have to do much more research so I can properly and accurately defend my path to her and hopeshe accepts it.
There is a lot going on in my life almost always. Along with newly following the Wiccan path, I just stared a new job, and am currently in the process of quitting the other two that I work regularly. I have a brand new niece who is so special and I am in the process of looking for an apartment with friends. (Some in which do not know of my Wiccan path.)
Maybe these things could get in the way of my spiritual path but regardless, if I don’t start now when will I? I have to make time for myself regardless. This is what I chose to do and this is the time for it.
A Year and a Day: Days 2&3
Unfortunately I was unable to access my computer yesterday to upload my day 2 so here we are, combining them in a single post.
Let’s begin with day 2 shall we. Day 2 is about words. Also comfort levels and information. Wiccan practices are not about words. They tend to be more of barriers actually. This is something I have always felt to be true for myself. I have a hard time explaining my feelings (as I’m sure many people do) but it goes beyond being uncomfortable about talking. It’s more about my inability to find he correct words that will capture how I think and feel. Words can be limiting.
As I read through my passage for day2 in my book, there are some questions that follow a set of 9 words. They are:
“What is my comfort level in using each word?”
“How do I understand each word?”
“How do I imagine that each word impacts other people who are not involved with Wicca?”
I’d like to share my thoughts and answers to these questions. Maybe not all of them, but a little bit for each word. I will not be including the way that Wiccans define them, as this is just me sharing my personal and original thoughts on each word.
Wicca:
“I feel fairly comfortable using his word. It has a whimsical ring to it. However it sounds so foreign to me as it rolls off my tongue. I know firsthand that people hear it and either think ‘evil witchcraft’ or they think neopagan and regardless there are plenty of people who would be morethan uncomfortable hearing it or talking about it. I feel they assume ‘devil worshiper’ (I know my mother does) and assume it’s something bad.”
Witchcraft:
“This is a word that would need some getting used to. Growing up I was taught that witchcraft is a bad thing and it causes harm, as I currently know to be not entirely correct. I’m sure there is some level someone could take it where it may cause harm but as a general rule I feel that if done properly and with only good intentions, will turn out to be good. Other people who are not associated will probably think of the wicked witch of the west from The Wizard of Oz or the Salem witch trials and I can’t say I would blame them, as I once thought similar things.”
Power:
“Power is a tricky word for me. I know that in the context of Wicca it is meant to be a personal power created by someone’s energy, or at least that is how I’ve imagined it to be up to this point, but power also is a corrupted word. Power sometimes equates to unfairness to me. Someone with power will generally use it in a less than great way. I imagine that’s why it’s a word on this list. These words are meant to make me think about their true meaning. About how it will have an effect if thought of in a certain way.”
Ritual:
“This word to me has all the spiritual and religious significance. Having a Catholic background, I am able to see and understand that several religions have rituals that go by different names, commonly understood by its synonym, ceremony. I feel that perhaps some people don’t see it that way though.”
Magic:
“Magic has always been something I have wanted in my life. As long as I can remember. Again, being brought up Catholic, I was told that when I want something to pray to God and just maybe I’ll get what I’ve asked for. Well I used to pray to that God and I asked him kindly for the ability to manipulate water. Water has always been the element I’ve been entranced by. I love the way it feels and moves and even just exists. Needless to say this God never granted me and magical powers. I had given up hope. I see magic as a wonderful thing, and I always have. Other people however, maybe don’t see it the way I do. They imagine perhaps scary things and uncontrollable, unpredictable, chaos.”
Occult:
“I have to admit that this is a word that has always worried me. I feel nervous and a bit anxious about it. Scared even. I feel that people, including myself until reading further, associated the word occult with cult and therefore assumed the scary, women abusing, crime infested, fear inducing group that does what they want and make their own rules at the expense of others to satisfy the few in charge.”
Pagan:
“Pagan and paganism is something I was always taught was wrong and that it’s the religion for the devil worshipers and that they just make sacrifices and used blood to do the devils work. It was always a word of fear growing up. It still very much is for people who don’t associate themselves.”
Spell:
“Not exactly a word I would consider to have bad feelings associated with it but definitely some level of discomfort. Spells were always associated with witches and witchcraft and magic. Not necessarily words that cause grief for me, but the unknown is never comfortable. When I try to imagine what others think I assume they think of fantasy stories. Harry Potter and such.”
Earth-Religion:
“To be quite honest it’s hard to have any negative feelings towards this word. Who in their mind would hear Earth-religion and thing something bad? My first thought was people who love the earth, and then I imagined fairies and druids. I’m sure other people think similarly to that, or at least I hope so.”
--------
Hopefully I’m not alone in having similar first reactions to these words. I hope anybody who bothers to read this will look into the Wiccan definitions and attempt to understand, even if they don’t plan on following Wicca or some other pagan religion/spirituality.
Onto day 3 then. For day 3 I had to get a 5-7 inch white taper candle and a candle stick. These items I grabbed today, (not at my usual store because I couldn’t get there) but there’s always somewhere that has candles and candle holders.
The idea for today was to review my initial feelings about the words above and find some common word that fits the negative feelings I had. I had to think about why I thought the way I did about them. Almost all the negative feelings I had stemmed from misinformation fed to me by the Catholic church, my mother and other relatives (absolutely not their fault) and representation in the media. The word I came up with that fits all the negativity was “unease”. I feel it suits it best because I did feel uneasy. Even the words I felt alright about were still shaky. This word I wrote on my white candle.
I suggest you don’t be like me and wait until you are close to being ready to go to sleep to do this.
As the candle burned and the wax melted with the word with it, I made the vow to never allow myself to feel such unease about my path. I vow to do research on a topic or word before allowing myself to settle with an unfortunate assumption. This will apply to everything, not just Wicca.
To take part in this ritual was enlightening for me. I feel more comfortable with these words, and also with myself. I feel empowered and confident. I was able to release a bit of tension within me and I ended up feeling better about my path than I did to begin with.
Blessed be lovelies. I hope you find your way.
A Year and a Day: Day 1
How fitting it should be that I begin my year and a day on the autumnal equinox. Fall is my very favorite season of the year, and living in New England, it’s very beautiful and magical.
Day one of my Year and a Day is all about the Earth. Feeling it, connecting with it, and getting to know it. Fortunately I have plenty of it around me. The leaves have already begun to fall and change color. I spent some outdoor time sitting on the ground, searching for some fallen branches even. I plan to make a pentacle with completely natural items. (Branches, flowers, grass, etc.) Today was a good day for that. I found an acorn top and tried to use it as a whistle. I made all of one successful sound with it which was quite loud, however I was unable to make the sound again.
I feel as though I expected something different for the first day, but this was such a wonderful first day experience that I was able to do in my down time. It wasn’t time sensitive and it was at my own pace. Perhaps I should’ve expected that, I am after-all going to be more of a solitary witch and will be doing everything at my own pace in the future.
I’m also happy to see that this isn’t going to be a crash course. It’s going to be more of a gradual, bit by bit, information source with all the basic knowledge at a more than manageable pace.
I look forward to day 2!
Druid Craft Tarot Deck
My First Tarot Deck
I was already well aware of the fact that I had absolutely no knowledge of Tarot whatsoever, except that my mother is terrified of them. She always told me that they will attract demons to me, and bad things will happen and it bring nothing but bad luck.
In my mother’s experience, she knew someone who had worked with and read Tarot cards. Her own mother. My mom told me about her a lot seeing as I never got to meet her. My mother was an orphan by the age of 12 so I obviously never was even a thought by the time they passed.
Anyways, my mom told me that she read Tarot cards and that she predicted things that actually happened. My mother has 3 sisters and 2 brothers. The three older sisters ended up being all pregnant around the same time. My grandmother predicted that, along with the sex of the babies accurately for her three older daughters. She had also predicted the accident my uncle got in while stationed in Japan during his time in the military. He lived but became paralyzed from the waist-down. She also knew how her husband and herself died. All these things she said would happen, happened. I’m not really convinced she read that in the cards to be honest. I have a feeling she may have had some sort of a gift, and maybe the Tarot cards helped at best. I also wonder if she was also secretly pagan while the rest of the family was catholic. Of course I will never know, and that’s okay. It just a very comforting thought. In her honor I also plan to change my last name to hers.
So honestly, my thoughts on all of this were conflicting at first. When I grabbed the Tarot book off the shelf in the store, I read about what they really are. I researched online people’s thoughts and opinions, and beginner knowledge and read plenty articles written by people like me. The ones who were once in my shoes. I had heard mixed feelings about buying your own tarot deck. I figured I have nobody in the world that knows me and knows that I have begun this path. I’m unsure if I plan to tell my family or not. So I doubt I was going to be gifted a Tarot deck by anyone. I had no choice but to buy my own. And so far that has worked for me.
Before I did anything with the cards I read about them. I felt like I read enough to give them a try. So I asked my question. I don’t remember exactly what I asked because I didn’t write it down. But I have a photo of the first cards I got from it. I did a three card spread and got: Princess of Swords, Seven of Wands, and XXI - The World.
I had no idea what to do with these. I read that it helps to study the photo and memorize it to the point you can close your eyes and picture it exactly. And so I did exactly that and it did not help at all. So I went to the book to see its meanings. I interpreted it as my interview would go well and that things are going to get financially better.
So the next day I went on my interview and it went incredibly well. I was hired on the spot and I would be making my own schedule and have an hourly pay of $4 more than my higher paying job and $5 more than my lower paying job. I am working two jobs and going to school full time. No days off. Ever. But that is all going to change. I will be making more money at a job that suits my lifestyle better. Throughout that day I had received several compliments by people I had near me. People I didn’t know went out of their way to come up to me to tell me how nice my shoes were or they loved my dress. It was a great feeling. Shortly before work I had gone to dunkin donuts to get myself some apple cider. I ordered and paid for a small but they accidentally made me a large instead. What an amazing day I had.
The next day I had told my friend on campus about my adventure into learning to read Tarot. For some reason he had brought it up. Honestly now that I am writing about it I wonder if he saw the book in my backpack. Regardless he asked if I could read them for him. I said sure. I figured I would do what I did for myself.
That did not work out.
I know some people don’t want other people touching their cards but I feel like the reading would be more accurate if the cards had their own energy. So I had him think about his question and shuffle the cards. Then I laid them out and told him to pick three and put them in order from left to right. I don’t remember which cards he picked because again, I didn’t write it down. I read out loud to him the full description of the meanings of the cards and my answer to him is he will is on the right path for school. Later I felt like it probably wasn’t accurate. I have a feeling I know what his question was though I can’t be certain. And if it was what I thought it was then my answer made absolutely no sense whatsoever. So I messaged him and asked if it made sense to him. Sure enough it did not. I asked him if I could try reading for him again once I have a better idea of what I’m doing and he said absolutely.
It made me the happiest to find out someone in my actual daily life who would support me and do their best to help me on my journey. It gave me the courage to tell one other person, which was my best friend in the world. She has known me for going on over 10 years already. We’ve been best friends ever since we met. She got a text telling her briefly the new things in my life sine I hadn’t seen her in a little while and her response was nothing short of my expectations. She said of course she would support me and love me and that as long as I’m safe and happy she is too.
The next person to tell is going to be my boyfriend. I’m unsure of his reaction because he likes to find how how he can prove that things like this are wrong. Not the belief part but the things we do. Reiki is something he doesn’t believe has any sort of healing power and thinks is complete nonsense. Which is fine for him to believe but not okay for him to push onto me. Update on that conversation in the next few days.
So I know I can’t remember shit so I began to keep a log about the questions I ask and the cards I pull. My first written down experience was wonderful. I got so much more out of the reading. Instead of simply memorizing the look of the card, I looked at the scene before me and wrote down what I see. If I see a man in bed with his head in his hands, it seems like he is conflicted about something or mentally struggling with whatever is going on in his head. And I felt that it fit my situation with the question i had asked. The book seemed to tell me roughly what I had grasped from the image. I felt amazing. I had successfully read my Tarot cards. At this time I have written in my book for it twice. Both times were great. Hopefully soon I can give my friend another attempt at reading.
So the deck I have are in a purple silk drawstring bag along with some amethyst. The crystal helps with visualization and enhances psychic abilities. I store them in the bag with the cards as a way of protecting the cards from negative energy and cleansing them at the same time.
Blessed be friends, I hope this was helpful.
Starting My Journey
Merry meet dear humans.
I have just recently begun my journey down the Wiccan path. I am brand new at this, (I just began a few days ago) so please to those who are more experienced than I am, feel free to give advice, input, and correct me kindly if I explain something wrong or give misinformation.
With that said I’d like to explain my origins. I was raised similar to countless other children in the world; a catholic who fears the pagan ways and rituals. My mother always told me to never see a psychic and to stay far away from tarot cards. “Never ever get your palms read.” And any amount of the color black or my love of spooky things would be in her eyes considered “goth” and unacceptable. For a long time I felt uncomfortable in my clothes I didn’t prefer and the faith I was forced to practice. Don’t get me wrong, she is a wonderful mother and I love her dearly. She did what she truly thought was the right thing and I can not hold it against her.
Friends of mine introduced me to witch shops (I’m unsure if that is correct for what I’m talking about) and I started getting into crystals a little bit. I had about 4 or 5 crystals and I began meditating with them. I looked into Buddhism but decided pretty quickly that is isn’t for me. There was a lot of information that didn’t exactly suit the ideas and concepts that fit for me and my lifestyle and true beliefs.
To make it short, the things I decided I definitively believed were...
1. There is some sort of higher being (a god/goddess) and that there had to be more than one.
2. Everyone/everything has a soul or a spirit of sorts.
3. The way you feel greatly impacts day to day activities and routines. (example if I woke up and I had a negative view of the world then I would be granted more negativity vs having a positive view would attract more positivity.)
I’m unsure entirely of how I came to the idea of paganism. It seemed as though I woke up one day and had the answer. Something told me to look into Wicca and so I did. I purchased a book on Amazon called, Wicca: Finding Your Path by Lisa Chamberlain. I have not yet received it. Because I am so impatient when I put my mind into something, I couldn’t wait a week for the book to be delivered. So I went to Barnes and Noble because it was the only bookstore open near me that would be sure to have something in stock.
Right away as I walked in the doors there was a shelf that held books on Wicca, Tarot reading, Reiki and other such materials. I just thought that there couldn’t be a more clear sign that I’m on the right path. I grabbed two books from that shelf. One called, A Little Bit of Wicca: An Introduction to Witchcraft, and the other, A Little Bit of Tarot: An Introduction to Reading Tarot, both written by Cassandra Eason.
That’s when I got excited.
I got those books and at this point I had already done a small amount of research. There is so much to explore and I want to know all of it. It’s just too bad I can’t retain ridiculous amounts of information all at once. I decided to start slow. I will begin my path with what seems right to me. I already know some about crystals so that is included, and Tarot reading is something I am beginning with as well since there is so much to do already with that. I also joined a Facebook group for beginners to Wicca. Everyone there has been so helpful and wonderful to converse with.
Today I am three days into this. I have read my cards a few times and the answers to my questions have seemed to make sense as far as I’m concerned and I’m now collecting items to use to set up my altar. I picked up a tiny cauldron, some witch salt, a new incense holder (I didn’t need it, it was so cute I couldn’t resist) and some extra amethyst to keep with my cards.
I’m entirely excited to begin my journey and I’m happy to share with other newcomers like myself and I look forward to learning more from more experienced witches.
Blessed be my dears
