Reflection: Weaknesses 09/05/16

Looking back i did have problems.firstly.The look was not really achieved and the main problem is that i did not considered the that i was shooting outside.And yes, It is do able but i did not put in consideration that there are different technique in shooting indoors and outdoors.

                                        Story development

The other problem was the development of the story. The running sequence was meant to start with a longer opening sequence.For instance, Matthew is locked in a room, and in this scene this is about Matthew coming to the realisation that he is lock up. However in the final version of the running sequence.It just ended up with Matthew waking up looking around noting Kane.What i would of done was to add a scene of how and what Matthew life was like before(the same with Kane). The other reason why was lewis was not keen in acting, especially the running scene which was the most critical  part and the fact that Lewis did not wanted to run is the reason why i had to cut down some shots (a lot).

Front style

I used this front because it fits with the location which is an urban location.The effect it has is a gritty feel and the font helps capitalise the mood.

What i would do differently

Looking back at my short film there are some stuff i would change or add.firstly the dialogue was the least of my to do list which in turn lacked character identity.

If i had the chance to do it again i would of added a scene where Matthew is talking to someone in person or over the phone so the audience can get an idea of the type of person Matthew is. Secondly i would have shots of Kane catching up or running.the reason i did not do a running scene for Kane is because the actor did not want to run at all so i had to change things around.

Second edit

Ive kind of finished my first edit and Im working on a second edit the reason for this is because i want to change the look of the short film by adding different colour grading as this can make a difference in creating and establishing is short film  and the other reason why is i want to use the sound i got to kind of check if it works.

Reflection

Looking back at my final major project there were strengths and weakness.Firstly the framing of the shots were good for instance, when louis was running away from Lewis i was able to keep Louis in shot, even the handheld panning shots (Running in full speed).The effect of that shot brings dynamic motion making louis feel he is carrying the shot rather then the other way round. Secondly the pacing of the edit was by far the most achieved goal as my goal was to make the short film feel (trailer) feel energetic and momentum driven feel.

Editing 31/05/16

Today i was editing and i just notice there was noise problem.

The first scene in particular when Matthew is peaking through the window. The sound was great, however when we cut to Kane who is outside the noise was okay yes i did use a good mic but it was picking up sounds i did not want like horse totting. The problems was more related to me not taking my time with continuity (in terms of sound).For instance, Kane is outside on the phone and the shot transitions to Mathew then a reverse shot of Kane in a different  angle but because i was shooting outdoors the ambiance noise changed in between the same takes.

Now looking back through the editing i understand the problem and on Thursday I’m going to record some ambience noise for some of the shot so it sounds like it’s in continuity.

Location for the first scene

Today i went to look for a location in (WA004) so i went to ask jack if i was able to shoot in that room.However it turns out it  was for decommissioned so i asked someone if i was able to shoot turns out i got the go ahead.

Thoughts of test shots

I liked the test shots so much to the point i want to use these shots in my final major project.However it means i would have to work around the shots and match the scenes which is a task it self.

Yesterday i went shooting for test shots and looking back i would say that it went well.For instance, when i used the tripod to track Luis with the camera movements felt very energetic and thats because i was following his movement with a pan shot unlike the shot before which was a establishing still shot which felt like it was missing something. 

Using the fig rig unlike the tripod actually emphasis the effect because of the wobbly camera movement.Also the pros in using a fig rig is that you are not limited to an area.For example, there was i shot where Luis was climbing and without the fig rig i was not able to follow luis.

I Saw Somebody Yesterday

Yesterday i went to help a classmate to shoot a short documentary and as we was walking around the park to get an interview we walked into Bill Maloney.

Shooting overcast

The reason why i tend to stay away from shooting outside because you lack full control of lighting due to the weather.For instance, you could be shooting outside then all of a sudden it gets cloudy and then you will lose the quality of light.thats why when i do shot outside i can at least prepare to shoot in overcast weather.

This explains how to shoot in cloudy days and still get good shots.However there was a point he made that shooting in black and white is best shot in a cloudy weather because it does not overexpose the light to much.

Jason Bourne 25/04/16

My chase scene is inspired by the Bourne trilogy in particular Jason Bourne. What sets Bourne legacy apart is that the action scene such as fighting and running.the also use a wobbly camera.This in turn intensify the effect which portraying.

Initial idea (update) 24/04/16

                                                   Synopsis  

The story is about Mark who wakes up in a locked room, as he approaches the door he stumbles across a peculiar noise.Mark then pries through the keyhole only to see the man looking back at the same general direction as where Mark is.In a state of Shock he makes a noise, which turns the strangers attention to the door as the man opens the door Mark pushes the door with strenuous amount of effect knocking back the man, Mark then makes an escape then the chase beings.

Cinematography Part 1                     24/04/16

The use of cinematography in films is important in conveying the genre and mood to the audience, as well as conveying hidden messages and creating tension and enigma that keeps the attention of the audience.

                                              Camera shots

Film genres such as thriller use close ups, this creates tension and suspense which intern helps create emotion towards the audience.The most used shot in cinema history is deep focus, this is when the fore ground or the background of the subject is pulled in or out of focus.By using this technique it draws the audience to the focus subject.

Conventions of a chase scene.                            24/04/16

Fast pace edit. This creates an intensity and increases the tempo of a chase. It can also show down when the climax of the chase is.

Close ups that show the protagonists and the antagonists emotion.s

Wide  shots to show the location ie (establishing shot.)

The location is normally busy with extras and moving objects such as cars in the background. Or an interesting landscape.

Shot at night to create intensity (if day it tends to be as dark as possible).

The camera rarely stays stationary. It can dolly, tilt and zoom.

Diegetic sound that creates a realism and connote different things. For example a gun will draw the police attention.

The music usually starts off slow then  builds along with the chase until it reaches climax.

The key is to make it appear to the audience that the escapee could get caught.

Initial Idea

My first idea for my final project is a short film preferably a drama, thriller or both. The story is about a single parent who lost his child.Then three years later we see the parent just finishing up his job.As he is walking home he comes across a kid who appears to be getting rob by some thugs.the parent helps out the kid from getting robed.Then the kid then informs the parent that he is  is in trouble for helping out the kid.

At the start of the course i wanted to be a director just for the sack of being in charge and displaying my name in the film credits however after my final major project i now know what it really means to be a director.
