I was rereading Prisoner of Azkaban and I completely forgot that Sirius was canonically described as James and Lily’s best friend? It’s mentioned way too many times to be a mere coincidence:
“Why hadn’t anyone ever mentioned the fact that Harry’s parents had died because their best friend had betrayed them?”
“He was going to live with Sirius Black, his parents’ best friend … He felt dazed.”
“For maybe half an hour, a glorious half hour, he had believed he would be living with Sirius from now on . . . his parents’ best friend.”
“He was my mum and dad’s best friend. He’s a convicted murderer, but he’s broken out of Wizard prison and he’s on the run.”
It’s not like the text had to include Lily here. She was not involved in the story of their animagi transformations or the creation of the map. Nor are Remus or Peter ever linked to Lily in such a way – their friendship with James and Sirius is repeatedly emphasized, and I think it’s probable they were friendly with Lily as well, but their own connection to her is never textually highlighted the way Sirius’s is. So I think the emphasis of Sirius being Lily’s best friend as well is purposeful (and even if it wasn’t, it doesn’t matter, it’s textually canon regardless)
It’s unclear when or how they became friends, but I love that James was clearly not the link connecting them together – Lily and Sirius remained in contact with each other entirely independently from him, as her letter proves. I remember reading somewhere that Sirius is the only one of Lily’s canon relationships that’s about her receiving support rather than giving it, which is what she deserves.
I think the revelation of Lily and Snape being best friends has overshadowed her connection to Sirius in the fandom, which sucks, because I think Deathly Hallows paralleled these two friendships in really interesting ways:
Lily got sorted into Gryffindor and looked back sadly at Snape … and then turned away from Sirius, who specifically tried to make room for her at the house table.
Adult!Lily wrote a letter with “lots of love” to Sirius … only for Snape, her former best friend, to tear it apart and claim it for himself after she and Sirius had both died.

i love blackevans friendship so much as well! it's just delicious they have such potential for a fun connection--and it doesn't need to have anything to do with James, it can be about them (though ofc they are also both close to James. they talk about him lol).
Okay but Sirius and Lily who had an extremely close sibling-like bond? Like, full on big brother-little sister dynamic between them.
Sirius and Lily who are mean to each other, calling each other names and picking arguments over the stupidest most insignificant things, only to turn around and be laughing and joking together not even twenty minutes later. People will genuinely think they can't stand each other, but really they're best friends who will always have each others backs no matter what.
Sirius and Lily who can be open and vulnerable with each other in a way they can't be with their other friends, because they're the only ones who know what it's like to watch your relationship with your blood sibling crumble right in front of you. They're the only ones who understand the grief of that, the anger and regret, how it feels to have so much love for someone who won't accept it anymore.
Sirius and Lily who give that love to each other instead. Who help each other move on, who listen to each others thoughts — no matter how cruel or selfish they might sound — without judgement. Who remind each other that it's okay to hate them, or miss them, or wish they'd never been brothers/sisters at all.
Sirius and Lily who both understand that blood isn't always thicker than water. Sirius and Lily who help each other learn to be okay with that, because chosen family can be more loyal than the one you're born into.

Lily was going on auto pilot, hands shaking, clutching a crumpled piece of parchment. A letter. From her sister.
“Don’t ever try to talk to me again, freak. All you are is a burden”
Petunia’s cold words rang through Lily’s skull, sharp and insistent.. They have been for the past hour. They wouldn’t leave her alone.
She couldn’t do this anymore. Couldn’t deal with Petunia’s bull shit. She’s been trying to repair their relationship for so long. Asking about her day every time she sent a letter, complimenting her every chance she got, showering her with love. And this is what she got in return.
“All you are is a burden”
Lily furiously blinked the tears away from her eyes, refusing to cry over something as stupid as this. No less in public. If anyone saw her wailing over a letter? Her perfect facade would be shattered.
All she wanted was to be alone. In her dorm. Sobs muffled by the soft pillows.
At that thought, she sped up considerably, catching sight of the Gryffindor common room. Great. Solitude.
No one would be awake at this hour, it was almost the middle of the night. She could cry in peace.
Muttering the password to the portrait guarding Gryffindor tower, she swung the door open to the common room and froze.
Something, someone, was rocking in front of the fireplace. Back and forth. Back and forth. Much like her, they were clutching a piece of parchment. Except they let the tears stream down their face freely. A boy. Sirius Black.
Wait? Sirius Black?
Petunia’s words stopped echoing through her head, her thoughts now clouded with confusion.
That can’t be right. Sirius Black was loud and reckless. He pulled harsh pranks on innocent people, laughed boomingly at cruel jokes meant to hurt. His presence took up rooms, some may say he was larger than life itself. She hated him. The feeling was mutual.
Now he was not that person. He was small, curled in on himself.
She stalked forward slowly, like one would towards a wounded animal.
“Black?” she said, not concerned, but utterly confused.
He jolted, looking up at her, his face all red and splotchy with tears. He blinked up at her, rubbing his eyes before quietly replying:
“Not now, Evans.”
Quietly.
Something was really wrong.
He turned back towards the fireplace and curled back into a ball, rocking back. And forth. Back. And forth. His hands were still holding onto that piece of parchment, knuckles white from how harshly he was gripping it.
He unfolded it, seeming to forget she was there. That piece of paper was actually a photograph. Two almost identical looking boys were printed on it, both with rumpled, snow dusted clothes. One had long, flowing hair, eyes sparkling. He was ruffling the other boy's hair, grinning up at the camera. That one was definitely Sirius. Lily’s gaze drifted to the other boy. He seemed more reserved, not quite grinning like Sirius was, but a small smile was still on his face. His hair was shorter, swatting Sirius’s hand away.
Towards the bottom of the photo, a small note was scribbled down hastily. It read:
“Me and Reginfrithew, Christmas before Hogwarts!!”
She had heard about Regulus Black. In fact, his sorting had happened today. He got placed in Slytherin-
Oh.
He was crying over his brother.
At this, Lily’s stance softened considerably. She came here for the same reason she presumed he did, to cry over a sibling of her own. She knew how complicated sibling dynamics could be, the letter in her hand evidence of how woeful they could be.
Tonight, Lily decided she would set her hatred towards Sirius Black. Tonight, they were nothing but one boy, and one girl, bonding over their respective issues.
She sat next to him cautiously, then began to speak.
“You know, I get how you’re feeling, Sirius.” Lily said, her voice barely a whisper. She glanced at him, he didn’t react. He just kept on rocking. Back. And forth. Back. And forth. She continued on anyway.
“I have my own… issues. With my sister.”
She uncurled her fist, revealing the letter from Petunia. She didn’t think she would ever let anyone see this letter. She was probably going to burn it the second she entered her dorm. But alas, here she was. Showing it to Sirius Black. This is not how she expected things to go.
Sirius finally looked up at that, his brows furrowed. He glanced down at the piece of parchment, a disbelieving look on his face.
“Perfect prissy Evans? Having problems?” His voice cracked, eyes still red. She nodded, unable to say anything. Petunia’s words were rattling through her mind once more.
“All you are is a burden”
“You can read it, if you’d like.” Lily responded, placing the letter on the floor. She stared at the flickering flames raging in the fireplace. Petunia had once compared Lily’s hair to flames, bold and bright. That was before she had gotten invited to Hogwarts, back when they were the best of friends.
Sirius gently picked up the piece of parchment, his eyes skimming through the words her sister had written. She avoided Sirius’s gaze, dreading his next words.
“Oh.”
Lily peeked up at him, expecting to see pity written all over him. But instead, all she found was understanding. It coated his words, making Lily feel warm. She wasn’t the only one with a dysfunctional sibling relationship, she realized then.
“Yeah,” She said softly. “Oh.”
Sirius placed it back down, as gentle as he was when he first picked it up. He slid his own piece of paper towards her, the photograph he was clutching before.
“Regulus and I… we used to be really close, you know. And I thought he would be different. I thought he wouldn’t be like the other- the other people in our family but-” he choked out, tears threatening to spill from his eyes once more. She waited for him to finish, but he never did. After a moment's silence, she spoke.
“Tuney and I were the same. Attached by the hip. Now…” she trailed off, voice faltering.
“I get it.” Sirius responded, running a hand through his disheveled hair.
They sat in silence for a while, both of them getting lost in their own worlds.
They didn’t need words. The solemn tranquility was enough. Finally, Lily cut through the quietude.
“You’re not so bad, Black.” she managed a small smile, nudging him on the shoulder.
He smiled back, looking a little more like the Sirius she was used to.
sirius and lily have a bit where whenever someone comes up to flirt with the other they stage a scene that always tangles into some insane storyline. like some hopeful guy will walk up to lily’s seat and sirius will slam his hands on the table in mock jealousy and profess his bleeding heart for lily then she will angrily accuse him of cheating on her with her sister while sirius gasps and breaks down into apologetic tears pleading with her to take him back and the person who just wanted to ask lily to hogsmeade slowly backs away
There's something so special about Lily and Sirius' friendship. The way they relate to each other because of their sibling issues and even they have the same problem they keep assuring the other one that leaving was actually the only option
Hc that Lily came around to Sirius before she started liking James. she didn’t hold fondness for Sirius at first, but an understanding. She would never tell Sirius this of course, lest his ego get too big, but she felt a silent kinship with him; the way both their fire and ferocity was to mask their insecurities, the way they would look at their siblings with equal ire and affection, the way they both felt they had to put on a facade of perfection in order to hide any perceived weakness, the way their fear of being abandoned manifested into undying loyalty for those they loved and trusted.
