Our final weekend at Nishi Gallery New Acton, and the "Internecine: The Vanished Musicians" exhibition is almost over. The collaborative aspect remains open until late September, and all audio and video remains online. You can still purchase digital copies of 'Resettled', 'Railway Spine' and 'Hay/Yass' at Bandcamp including the Internecine DVD. Proceeds to charity and translation of 'The Vanished Musicians' book to English. Thanks all for your amazing support, and feel free to drop by 11am to 3pm today and 11am to 4pm tomorrow!

Using piano timbers, felt hammers, vintage sheet music, violin strings, reel-to-reel tape and components, Lorna Crane performed a public response to The Vanished Musicians exhibition and story using handmade brushes constructed from the above materials. The work was completed to aged pianola rolls, using coloured ink to the project colour scheme, in her unique calligraphic style. lornacrane.com

Belated formal thanks to Pambula contemporary abstract artist Lorna Crane, who stopped by Nishi Gallery over the weekend, performing an ink based response to the exhibition and story.

Lorna and I had much fun constructing some brushes out of reel to reel parts, piano hammers, reel tape and other associated material. Lorna’s work can be viewed at the gallery until close on Sunday, and the brushes are available for purchase, with proceeds of sales to be directed to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne.

SILENT AUCTION

Good morning all! 

As we move into our final week of exhibition at Nishi Gallery, a few of of our artworks remain unsold. In the interest of getting as much funding to our charity partners as possible, we are entering into a ‘silent auction’ phase. If any of the works you have seen are of interest, we are accepting bids for assessment by the artists. Nishi is open 11am to 3pm weekdays, 11am to 3pm Saturday and 11am to 4pm Sunday (our final day).

FAQ’s on remix submission

A few questions have come through about reworking, reinterpreting and resubmitting material for our remix project:

When are submissions due by?

There is no fixed submission deadline for submission, but we are trying to finalise the track listing by end AUGUST (revised - see below). Feel free to email at [email protected] if there are any queries.

Can I only remix one track?

No! Feel free to do as many as you like. You may use multiple stems across multiple tracks if you choose to.

Is there a required length of time for tracks?

No. As long or as short as you would like.

Is there any style, or brief?

No style will be excluded - essentially, community participation is the key. The brief provided to artists for the exhibition so far has been to explore EXILE and INTERNMENT as themes.

UPDATE: Since being contacted by interested participants, we’ve decided to extend the nominal submission date to END SEPTEMBER, to allow time to complete detailed work. Thanks for your feedback, and best of luck with your works!

“Internecine: The Vanished Musicians”

Exhibiting at Nishi Gallery, Kendall Lane, New Acton, Canberra.

For the Vanished: a Loop of Werner Baer’s arrangement of Jewish hymn “Emet Ki Ata”, processed through reel-to-reel tape. This loop was used as the starting point for the string arrangement developed by NY jazz arranger and composer Scott Arcangel and myself, which was recorded at Infidel Studios NSW by cellist Alex Voorhoeve of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. Stems were distributed internationally to seven sound designers and musicians in sequential order, with each participant reworking the arrangements of the previous – “a remix of a remix of a remix”. Video graded by Ian M Hazeldine. The result was 'Resettled' - available at internecine.bandcamp.com/album/resettled Proceeds of sales are to be donated to the ASRC Melbourne.
