My cousin, at the end of episode 17 where Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing are arguing about the Golden Core switch but aren’t outright saying it’s that

My straight cis male cousin doesn’t really emote much, so he’s spent most of the time watching the screen with a stony face, apart for that time in episode 13 when Wen Chao threw Wei Wuxian into the cave and he audibly gasped.

Anyway, we got at the end of that episode, just after Lan Wangji felt the indignity of being assumed straight, my cousin turned to us and said “it’s been a couple of episodes now that I’ve got the impression they’re a little more than friends, but I’m not sure if it’s real or if I’m assuming things because I’m not used to Chinese shows”

The great experiment of 2021 thus concludes with a resounding success

So while I was watching episode 18 I was looking at the two guys working for Long Xiao, and I couldn’t help but think that their terrified stares were reminding me of something, and then, suddenly, the realization

But oh my god I was watching the end of Word of Honor episode 16 and all I could think was “wait, where have I seen this dynamic” and then I realized

One thing I can’t quite understand are the staunch defenders of Madam Yu

Yes, okay, so her treatment of her children and Wei Wuxian isn’t too egregious considering cultural standards of the past, but like... neither is Jin Guangshan’s treatment of Jin Guangyao, or everybody’s treatment of Jin Guangyao for that matter, but we do all agree that wasn’t good, right?

Like, I get fighting against the idea that Madam Yu is a one note monster, but also, her actions are framed as a darker shade of grey in the novel itself. “Madam Yu is, objectively, a massive dick” is a perfectly logical and understandable opinion to have.
