self care is not a face mask, it's washing your face daily and using spf and a nongreasy moisturizer to maintain the health of your skin.

i like to think of it as: if i was caring for a child, would i give in to everything they want just because, or would i make sure they get their sleep, their nutrition, physical movement?

when a kid is having a meltdown screaming that they wanna eat icecream for dinner, you don't just let them eat icecream for dinner. you make them eat at least a few pieces of broccoli and a forkful of chicken first.

when a kid has to clean up their room, but shirks that cause they'd rather play, you don't just drive them to their friend's house and ignore the mess. you don't tell someone else to clean up the mess for them, and you don't leave it to get worse and worse.

you make your kid wash up and brush their teeth cause the alternative is being the stinky kid, cavities, and being scolded for letting your kid's teeth rot. to say nothing of the pain and financial cost.

you install adblock so they're not bombarded with commercials for a gazillion shitty toys they already have too many of. you don't buy them a "little treat" every day or every week just for doing the bare minimum. that's not a treat anymore, it's an expectation.

you turn the ipad off when they've reached screentime quota. enough with the flashing lights and colors, it's time to log back into reality.

when they socialize with kids that are mean to them, you don't tell them to pretend it's not happening, you get them out of that situation. so why are you following influencers and shops pushing you to buy crap you don't want to feel better about a problem only they think you have? why are you friends with people who are shitty friends?

you make them go to bed and go to sleep at a certain hour because you have to be up in the morning for activities, and dealing with their shitty mood from lack of sleep is no good for anyone. if they scream at the teacher and punch another kid in the mouth, you're gonna have to deal with that. you really don't want to deal with that. no amount of green smoothie is going to fix the fact that they didn't sleep enough.

when they're upset, you take them aside and talk it out. you get to the root of the problem and decide how to fix things. you don't slather them in clay and tell them to do yoga.

German here. This is, essentially, what happened in 1939. The Nazis got the majority in parlament through democratic process and then applied terror until the rights of the people to vote them out again were taken away. I should add that they did, among other things, send out their paramilitary to provoke fights and also took advantage of the Reichstagsbrand. (It should be noted that I´m currently unclear on whether or not the Nazis caused that fire and blamed someone else, or if they indeed only took advantage.) Back then, the enemy was the communists and jewish people. The SA was on the street, terrorizing people. Abducting people. Taking people around the back of a house to be shot. Until they got what they wanted: absolute power.

That´s what this is. Trump tried it the soft way in his first term, and the people voted him out of office. This time, his cabinet isn´t fucking about. (I´m saying his cabinet because I shit you not, I highly doubt Trump could find his own ass pockets at this point.) This is, essentially, a terror campain. They hope you´ll grow tired of caring. They hope that if they disappear enough people, you´ll grow too scared to fight. They hope to find the right enemy to present to you as the cause of all your problems. They hope that they can somehow prevent the midterms from going to the democrats.

Here´s the important bit: Do. Not. Stop.

It´s tiring. It´s scary. Giving in will feel easier at some point. Your brain is wired to keep you alive, and going out every day to fight the Gestapo isn´t very in line with that goal. But it must be done. You´re scaring them. The fact that people of so many different backgrounds are deciding they hate ICE more than they hate each other is killing their entire spiel.

They have, ironically, succeeded splendidly in giving the nation a common enemy to unite against. Unfortunately for them, the enemy is their off-brand Gestapo and the pumpkin in chief.
