yesterday at work we were all talking and i mentioned south america and one of the teenaged girls i work with went “what’s south america” and i was so taken aback that her twin sister answered before me and said “it’s like mexico and shit” which gave me even more whiplash. and i went “mexico is in north america. have you ever heard of brazil” and the first one went “i dont knowwww…..😣” like i know not everyone has a knack for geography like i do but that was fucking scary. they’re both recent high school graduates. today i went to dunkin and the girl making the coffee was chatting with a regular who said he wants to pet lions and tigers someday. i said “well they still eat people” and the worker handed me my coffee and said “yeah, like they’re still venomous animals” and i think ive just started to accept that the average person knows fuck all about the world as long as they think it won’t affect them. i’m not even particularly smart. i just know a thing or two. yet people irl say im the smartest person they know. towards the end of rome’s industrialization period they were smelting a lot of lead, which produced toxic fumes that are believed to have lowered the cognitive capacity of almost every single person in the region by a noticeable amount. i have to wonder if covid and lead (in vapes and the air) and other man made chemical contaminants today are doing the same thing. i wonder if thats part of why fascism is becoming so popular in the west
