I’ve seen this post somewhere that explains why Stratt was probably put in charge. because of misogyny, men would likely tend to put a woman in charge for a really big crisis to use her as a scapegoat. which will has me thinking that if something grave were to ever happen on a global scale, these misogynistic men that are put in charge would likely do that.

it saddens me thinking of the possibility that the only time a woman is ever empowered is so that all the blame could be put on her.

The first christmas on the Vat you know Ryland bought Eva a Stanley cup for her coffees.

You know he wasn't the only one, and she instantly had a little collection.

All this resulted in is Eva carrying around TWO 40oz cups of coffee rather than two 20oz at all times. More efficient.

I've seen a few posts of Project: Hail Mary and Orpheus and Euridice.

I think if there's anything in this story that ties in to that it's Eva Stratt.

Eva Stratt is the Orpheus that doesn't look back. If she so much as falters, if she so much begins to doubt her choices and decisions: the Earth and Grace are lost. All of it is lost. If she looked back, if she let her sense and love for Grace overtake her, everybody would have died.

Stratt is a woman in an impossible position who cried when she watched Grace run away screaming because she was sending him to his death. She knew what she was doing and she had all the world on her shoulders.

I am not an expert in greek mythology, these are my two cents. The more I think about it the more it feels like you'd have to warp and stretch the metaphor, which then makes the metaphor not apply anymore Or I'm just too simple minded to see more.

someone once made a post about Stratt marrying Grace so he can’t testify against her in court and I keep thinking about it

it’s opened up a deep seated yearning for a post hail mary au where dubois and/or shapiro survive and strattland enters the messiest most toxic codependent marriage to ever grace the earth

What if Grace was the last person to hug her for the rest of her life?

It wasn't a heavy emotional moment, it wasn't "significant" in any recognisable way. They were together, talking, and maybe they got good news, maybe last preparations were successfully finished, and the launch is so, so close now.

Grace got excited as he always does and once the messenger left, he just turned to her with a huge smile on his face and saw her smiling back. So he hugged her, hard enough to lift her off the ground a little, and she let out a breathless laugh. Eva's surprised, and it took her a moment to react, but when she did, she hugged him back without hesitation.

Because no one was watching, there was no one she needs to be Stratt for, she could be Eva with him, she could be human. (They hug, she laughs, it makes him laugh, and maybe they both haven't slept in a day, and maybe they're both starved for touch. Maybe he quietly says you're amazing, maybe she takes the compliment without resistance, maybe she closes her eyes and clings to him just a little.)

Eventually, Grace set her down, thinking maybe he should apologize, but she was still smiling, all sparkling eyes and teeth, so he didn't.

It's how she tries to remember him, tries to remember herself — free of the weight of the world, for a single suspended moment, and happy.

It's always "hail Mary, full of Grace" and never "Eva, the first woman, whose sins cast humanity away from Eden (but humanity found it's place out there)".

Anyway, Eva Stratt, you did everything correctly, you made the wrong choice, humanity is alive because of your determination, the most woman ever. They coul never make me pin your morals down as 'good' or 'bad'.

Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.

Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.

And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.

Okay, i have to put my views on why i think Andy Weir made Eva a woman and doesn't think there's any political message in that. I don't think he intended to BE political, and im not gonna talk about that part.

Eva's character is a perfect foil to Grace in every single way. And as a narrative technique it does really drive home Grace's character and growth. Im gonna start using examples under the cut so Spoilers for that

Eva is perfect foil and I think Andy intentionally made her female to provide another contrast point between them and unitentionally sent a very political message.

Grace is a feminine man. Eva is a masculine (i'll explain) woman. Grace chooses to put his life above the lives of everyone. Eva would shoot herself dead if she had definitive proof it would save humanity. Grace is an undisciplined, unorganized, childish genius. Eva is a meticulous, focused, arrogant laywoman.

Grace is a character defined by running away from everything forced into a situation where he cannot run. He wasn't studying astrophage to save the world, that was a happy byproduct, but because he wanted to study them. Like, yeah he does want to save the world and humanity, but ultimately he removes himself pretty far from the astronaughts going to the Tau system. He doesn't even let himself register that Stratt checked for the coma gene on him. He doesn't accept that he's Stratt's second. He just refuses to accept that's a thing.

Okay Eva being Masculine, like in a straight guy's mind what a masc woman is. She doesn't wear make-up or do up her hair, she's arrogant to the point of getting into a pissing match with a prison guard, she puts everything at arms distance. And these traits are typically seen as masculine and counteract Grace's fun clothes. Stratt doesn't run away, she grabbed this authority and wields it as as delicately or as devastatingly as needed. She didn't get this job(if you want to call it a job) by being the smartest scientist ever, almost everyone she brings on knows more about science than she does. She was chosen because she's an administrator and a damn good one. She doesn't need acceptance by her community, she doesn't need to understand the tiny differences of astrophage, she doesn't need to do anything but direct the smartest minds to fix the solution.

Even down to why they don't make friends/relationships. Grace doesn't let people in because he's afraid of getting hurt. Eva doesn't let people in because it makes it harder for everyone when she has to make a decision.

So yeah, I don't think Andy Weir intentional was trying to say anything about women in power or men in power or anything. I think he was just creating a foil to our MC.

Personally, I can't see the character of Eva Stratt being anyone other than a woman, just based on my own experiences of managers in my life.
