The days all blended together. Honestly, Gaster preferred it that way. The only time he ever got a real sense of the passage of time was when he came into the Underground. There was one area – a small cave in waterfall, well hidden. He could manifest there physically, or something close to it. It was hard to tell. But even when he was there, he never saw anyone. Once – he’d seen a human. It seemed like they’d stumbled into the room by accident, unsure of how they got there. At first he didn’t think they could see him. But then they’d approached, and tried to speak to him. He’d vanished instantly, too shocked by the realization someone could see him. And since then, he hadn’t seen anyone else.
Which was fine. If he couldn’t see Sans and Papyrus, what was the point? He was lonely, but he was dead. And he’d accepted that.
Except… he’s not alone this time. There’s someone else in here with them. Though vaguely humanoid, he’s certain they’re not actually human. They almost look like…. a ghost?
He decides not to say anything. A human can see things normal monsters can’t, so he doesn’t expect this ghost to notice him. He lets his mind wander, wishing he were anywhere else. And then the voice shakes him from his thoughts.
– !
Wait – the ghost is looking right at him.
ARE… ARE YOU SPEAKING TO ME?
Hand constructs appear in the air, detached from his own form, and he signs rapidly, hoping the other can understand. His face, though disfigured, cannot hide the smile that widens beyond what should be normal.
HOW IS IT YOU CAN SEE ME?
Napstablook appears visibly confused when the other seems surprised that he’s acknowledging him. And there’s a small pause from the ghost, before he laid back down in the grass again and tilted his head a bit so he could continue to properly talk to him... Ya know, without giving too much effort. “Oh...... Sorry.... I probably should have said hello first..... I didn’t mean to be rude.....” Another pause, and then he frowns sheepishly while looking even more confused at the other’s quick questions.
“I mean....... That’s pretty easy......? I just........ You were kind of making noise....... And I know you probably didn’t see me here...... I’m pretty easy to look over........... But um............ Yeah...........”
There’s the tiniest shrug, before he runs a hand through the grass (quite literally). Then he continued. Dead eyes staring in a very nonchalant manner as he spoke again.
“I’m not sure how to answer that........... Are you used to people ignoring you too.........?”
