Thoughts About Sesshōmaru's Mother and Father, Or What Immediately Stops Me from Reading a Fanfic
I’m getting real tired of writers portraying Sesshōmaru’s mother as some victim of a husband with a wandering eye. The poor Lady Mother, or “Gobodō-sama,” sits passively by while the Inu no Taishō abandons her and Sesshōmaru for Izayoi and Inuyasha.
Really? Is that all fandom can come up with, now that we’re all the way in 2014?
The Inu no Taishō and his family lived during a period of Japanese history where polygyny was embraced (polyamory optional). If the Inu no Taishō could support two wives (and it appears he could, until Ryūkotsusei decided to act up), he’d have no reason not to do so.
“But,” you say, “the Inu no Taishō and the Lady Mother are yōkai, not humans! They were mates!”
I’m going to have to stop you right there. inu-fanon has done a marvelous job of systemically proving that the idea of “mating” in InuYasha is total and complete fanon. There’s no proof that the Inu no Taishō and the Lady Mother were connected through anything other than having a son by each other.
They obviously met up however many times it took to conceive Sesshōmaru, and when the Inu no Taishō delivered the Meidō-seki to the Lady Mother. At bare minimum, they shared space with each other two times.
As fans, that’s all we have canon support for.
Does that mean the Inu no Taishō and the Lady Mother didn’t love or like each other? Not at all. There’s just as much evidence for them being a lovey-dovey couple in perpetual honeymoon as there is for them being distant with each other––which is to say that there is no evidence for either idea.
It’s up to the fans to come up with any backstory for them, and that’s why it’s so annoying to see the same backstory every single time.
The Inu no Taishō, the Lady Mother, and Izayoi could have been one big happy threesome. Or perhaps the Lady Mother and Izayoi were friends, and the Lady Mother introduced Izayoi to the Inu no Taishō.
“Izayoi, you must meet this fellow. He’s ridiculous and has funny eyebrows, but he fathered a wonderful son for me and has a charming personality.”
“Are you sure? I mean, I have never thought about male yōkai like tha––oh!”
“Did I mention he pulls off those eyebrows very, very well?”
I know some readers are shaking their heads at the idea of the Lady Mother being friends with Izayoi or any human. After all, didn’t she ask Sesshōmaru if he planned to eat Rin and Kohaku?
Here’s another thing that gives fanfic writers a wonderful amount of flexibility (which is being thoroughly wasted): we know next to nothing about the Lady Mother.
She’s Sesshōmaru’s mother, she slept with the Inu no Taishō at least once, she’s an inuyōkai, and she has wonderful fashion sense. That’s the sum total of all the facts canon gives us. We don’t even know if that enormous floating castle belongs to her. For all we know, she was vacationing at a friend’s place. It certainly would explain why Sesshōmaru had such difficulty finding her.
As for the comment about Rin and Kohaku serving as Sesshōmaru’s snacks, she could have been straight up trolling her son. She’s quick to say he’s not as charming as his father, which could mean Sesshōmaru’s own mother doesn’t like him.
But we don’t know that! As fanfic writers, we have an enormous blank canvas to paint our imaginings upon. There’s no need to draw the Lady Mother as a victim of adultery in every fanfic.
If you must have your adultery fix, why not go with Izayoi cheating on the Lady Mother with the Inu no Taishō? It’d be original, at least.

Honestly now that I’m getting heated about SessRin again, let me be frank:
RIN:
Spent a decade around Kagome, a sexually liberated modern young adult woman, so not only is she fully aware of sex, she has probably learned things about female sexual liberation previously unheard of for a feudal Japanese teenager.
SESSHOUMARU
Stares dead-eyed at two women who were confirmed to be in love with him in a way that makes Castiel Supernatural look like giant slut and has quite possibly never had sex a day in his life until Rin went “dude come on” because his entire personality is The Blade and Revenge.
We know more about Sota as a parent than Rin as a mother and that is fucking bullshit
i often think about rin's pain as a mother and how underexplored that was in yashahime; i understand tonally it isn't the vibe. but to have longed-for children - only to have their entire childhood taken away from you, and when you wake up, then they're grown!....and not only grown but suffering, imperiled. the literal worst thing for rin given what she went through as a child.
i know that yashahime had less of inuyasha's dark fantasy tone; but if i could have it my way, yashahime would have been just as dark, and would have had more exploration of rin as a mother, as a condemned woman/sinner woman. rin's parallels to kikyo, in a sense; the shared identity between kagome, rin, and kikyo
reincarnation and soul splitting + the hells of japanese buddhism + conflict between civilizing foreign forces and indigineity represented by love of yokai + the shared destiny of all womankind + "there's no hope for women" -fiona apple + living under the dominion of men who hate you and men who love you + dogs and their owners. it's on my vision board
Oh, I am so glad you said this. I was composing a post in my head all day, but I didn’t want to be a downer. Seeing Rin and Sesshomaru have their moments was beautiful, but Rin’s story as a mother is gut-wrenching and not addressed at all. At the end, Towa may as well not have been hers, and while Moroha proudly declares herself the daughter of her father and mother, the twins end with only claiming Sesshomaru.
I know she doesn’t have magical powers, but it was a spit in the face to Rin. Also, telling their father to make sure Rin eats well and stays covered up at night was not funny to me. It infantilized her and made her a joke.
Her story should have been so much deeper and more powerful than that, and while it was nice to see her romance at the very end, I am so bitter about the rest of it.
The way Sesshomaru went from hating humans to broadcasting to the entire world that these hanyou girls are his daughters. *chef's kiss*
Holy shit, they seriously gave Rin a fucking gun
Die Grim Comet, you don't stand a chance against RIN AND HER GUN.
Seriously, they should've just given her that thing from the beginning, it would've been all over
I’ve tried to make it work, but let’s be honest, Shiina was trying to polish a turd.
However, even he has made decisions that I find all the worse because he can give good moments for Rin and Sesshomaru. The last bait and switch where we are shown what could have been with Rin and Sesshomaru raising their children and almost immediately having Towa reject that because her adopted family made her who she was (and yes, she didn’t like what Kirinmaru had become which showed that Sesshomaru kind of made her who she was too…but whatever) was just the final break for me.
The girls are shown to have their own unique power which I assume is from their humanity, but once again, Rin is relegated to the shadows. No mention of her at all, and Rin has gone from a caring, respectful girl with a streak of humor and mischief into a very foolish woman in this series. Rin wouldn’t have acted like an idiot over talking about her husband. She never had any doubts about where she belonged and in the original, spoke about his kindness and such openly with more dignity that she has shown in this series. I hate what both the anime and the manga have done to her.
I just can’t with this anymore.
Yashahime is booty.
