Marlin opened his mouth, then closed it again, his eyes lingering on the potter’s wheel. There were far too many things he could say, and just as many reasons why he couldn’t say them at all.
I want to drown myself in tequila. I want to smoke a million packs of cigarettes. I want to indulge in a body that I never should’ve touched in the first place. I want to bury myself in experience before it’s too late.
He gathered himself up again, coming back from the edge of his thoughts. “I…happened by your classroom,” he finally said. “Thought you might be working on something. Wondered if perhaps I could watch.” Because admitting that he was correct - that Marlin ached for company right now, especially from someone who barely knew him and wouldn’t ask too many questions.
He slunk inside the room, shoulders hunched forward as he walked, and tilted his head to the side. “What are you creating today, then?”
Marlin’s hesitation went unnoticed, and thusly, unremarked on. Gaius only ever had one foot in reality when he began his work after classes, and while his attention might have been scarce outside of his ceramics, he appreciated having the company.
❛ I see! Well, You’re always welcome to visit me, Marlin. ❜ even if they’d never spoken more than in brief passings during meetings. Their fields of expertise never crossed or lined up, and Gaius wasn’t exactly the best at introductions or conversation beyond those topics . . . ( he’d have to make an effort to change that now! )
❛ Come sit down next to me! Watching pottery is a great way to clear your mind; I find it to be a stress relief, ❜ his hands appeared to already be covered in clay and water, mostly from his class prior. Gaius reached for a chunk of clay and placed it in the centre, forming it into a more workable shape before the wheel began to spin.
❛ I’m making a bowl for my brother’s wife, ❜ he hummed to himself, ❛ I wasn’t there to attend the wedding myself . . . but she expressed an interest in my designs, so I wanted to make something she’d enjoy. I was thinking of painting flowers or fruit on it, but I’m not sure. ❜
