if marvel wanted a convincing love interest for steve in each cap movie then they shouldn't have made steve doing something reckless to rescue bucky a plot point in all of them 💀 and. maybe there was a reason they had to put a canon love interest in each movie. to distract from the actual love interest. because bucky's role is how a love interest is written. i'll admit that i don't like staron or steggy very much at all (but i'm chill with romanogers, it's cute and it had potential), so perhaps i am biased, but i don't think that saying that sharon and peggy were written as more a sidekick role (if you take out the kissing and the flirty dialogue), is inaccurate. if marvel wanted a convincing die-hard love story for the ages with either of those ships (and. stucky literally lasted through the ages), then they should have written bucky into that role, not the damsel in distress typa-role, the person that steve's risking his life for every dang movie 💀 in most movies, THAT person is the love interest, not the sidekick. the russo brothers even said that civil war was a love story (later clarified a platonic one, but a love story nonetheless), so it was actually intended to be written like that.
but ohhhhhh man. they're such idiots when it comes to each other. steve raiding a nazi base with no fighting experience because there's an slim chance that bucky's alive. bucky refusing to leave a burning building without steve, steve therefore jumping across a firey (is firey a word? it is now) pit even though he's not sure he can make that leap-- he kinda just shakes his head like if you won't leave without me, here goes, even though this plan could literally go up in flames and just does it. bucky saying he'll follow steve into the jaws of death-- essentially, that he loves him to death, till the end of the line. steve dropping his shield in front of the world's deadliest assassin because said assassin is bucky and he doesn't want to fight him. bucky breaking through years of brainwashing because of a promise they made decades ago, which was basically a marriage vow but with different wording. and those are just the major points... there's still little things here and there. like that "your pal, your buddy, your bucky." line. even hydra knew what steve's weakness was, WHO steve's weakness was.
how was all of that not intentional?? not to mention those songs in the first two cap movies. somebody over at marvel had to be shipping it, and even the writer of the civil war comic does 😭 and even though chris evans never flat-out said he thought steve and bucky could be a couple, he also never denied it (that i know of) and lowkey seemed to ship it tbh.
and... you've heard about the infamous bar scene, right?? the song there was foreshadowing at its FINEST and i'm so, so, so normal about that. genuinely i love how marvel actually did their research there and chose that song even though it came off as, i don't know, a little bit in love...
but lol steve was actually pining after his dead love interest the entire time even though it really seemed like they both moved on and were satisfied with their lives!! the lines "i've lived a life, my only regret is that you didn't get to live yours" and "i'm home", among others, didn't happen apparently. so send him back to live out the cardboard-cutout american dream, which he never said he wanted, in the surburbs while his friends get tortured.
im upset about stucky and steve's awful ending in case you can't tell but also... PEGGYSOUS! man i love that ship and it sunk too :( but hey, post-endgame canon did give us sambucky as a ship, and they're cute too so i'm glad they got their moment before bucky dies in doomday.
okay sorry im rambling ihbdyugsutjkvhuyrx. sorry. i cannot shut up when it comes to them, it's my toxic trait actually
but yes. beach au. anything where they get a frickin break and the five minutes of happiness that marvel allows their characters ;-;
