So, I can't stop thinking about how emotional Tom was as he delivered that final performance speech and it made me think about the transitory nature of acting.
Most people build friendships with work colleagues over a long period of time, and of course it's a bittersweet moment when you have to separate. You might get a new job. They might. You might get a promotion and/or move to another department. But in most cases you've been building these relationships over a long period of time.
Actors (and by extension, those who work behind the scenes - whether it be on stage or screen) have to make quick relationships. And by the time they are reaching the point where they feel like they 'know' their peers, they're often moving on to the next project.
Even when they return to sequels such as Tom and Charlie with Marvel, there's been a chunk of everyone's life that's passed without their colleagues/friends having been there to be part of it.
So, it's hardly surprising that Tom and the rest of the cast got so emotional at the end of their run on Broadway.
Tom has obviously spent a lot of time with his MCU co-stars off and on over the years. But that's just it. It's off and on. Same when he was filming KSI. I don't think it's been such a concentrated, continuous amount of time with one group of people since he toured with Cheek by Jowl.
And, of course theatre is a different creature than tv or film. There's a deep level of trust required to step on a stage in front of a live audience day after day and hope that both you and your colleagues don't slip up.
There's also the fact that all four actors had their Broadway debuts together. You got an almost child-like and infectious sense of excitement and sheer glee from the entire cast whenever they talked about being on Broadway. And it has been just the four actors. No understudies were needed. They've lived and breathed the play for months and months. An emotionally draining play to perform.
So it must feel very strange when suddenly you realise that's it. You're not going to see the same faces you've grown accustomed to seeing every, single day.
But they've also had SO much fun. It's been wonderful to follow their antics and I will definitely miss catching up on the latest shenanigans every morning (although I'll be glad of a little break from the never-ending tsunami of new content to gif every day! 😂)
They'll all undoubtedly see each other again. And I imagine they'll remain close friends, even if they're physically far from one another.
But it is the end of an era, and you could feel that in Tom's speech. 💕
