His name is John Egbert. He was the first of many characters you were bound to meet. Back then he was the main character, the hero in a sense. But the more pages you read, the more people you met, he slowly became less and less significant. After a while you began to think of him as boring in comparison to everyone else. He became nothing more than a baseline. A character made for the sole purpose of ensuring that your introduction to this intricate tale ran smoothly.

That is John is it not? Another carbon copy of the “lovable jokester” character that’s been recycled by hollywood for ages.

Tell me, is this who John is?

I’m afraid not.

Just because you didn’t see more to him doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

You didn’t get to see the days when he felt so terribly wrong for a reason he couldn’t figure out. Nor did you see when he crumbled under that weight of trying to live up to who he was supposed to be. He didn’t show you the fear he feld when he realized he wasn’t the standard issue “main guy” everyone assumed he was. It wasn’t something you needed to see.

You saw what came after. The desperation to cling to what remained of who he thought he was. You saw the notes his father left, a silent gesture of support and acknowledgement. You saw a boy who liked shitty movies and pulling pranks. Someone who wanted to be a hero and never let anything get to him.

You saw all of that, but you did not see everything. You didn’t see him struggle between wanting to throw away the standards he held himself to and the fear of losing control by doing so.

You saw him claiming not to be a homosexual.

You didn’t see that he was just a kid trying to cling to whatever shred of normalcy he had left.

John is a lot more than you give him credit for, but he is not cis today.

A small part of me wonders, seeing how many notes this post has come to have since I made it, how many people didn’t see my url and missed the part about John not being cis at the very end. Either way is nostalgic and nice to see that this post I made a couple years ago when I was in high school and was new to my identity as a trans guy and John Egbert was a character I really connected with. I dunno it’s just kinda wild looking back at how things have changed. But one thing that’s stayed the same is that neither John nor I are cis today.

Hi y'all, I’m Charlie! Thank you so much for visiting my fundraiser!

I’m a 16-year-old trans man who is in the process of medically transitioning (a very very slow process) and I’m hoping to have top surgery as soon after I turn 18 as possible, which is May 2019.  This surgery is a medical necessity which will greatly reduce my dysphoria and would allow me to be able to go through the world without being questioned or harassed.

Top surgery is a gender reassignment procedure for transgender men that creates a masculine chest. It involves breast removal (Subcutaneous Mastectomy), male chest contouring, and nipple/areola resizing and repositioning. I wouldn’t be nearly as afraid of going into men-only spaces and would reduce the main portion of my dysphoria.

I need your help. My parents are not supportive and are forcing me to pay for this surgery by myself. I am still in school, so the jobs I can work is limited, so anything you could give would be a literal and figurative lifesaver.  If you’re unable to donate please share and spread this as widely as you can, that also is a huge help. With Stephen Hawking’s passing, today is a sad day for science. But amongst all his praise and achievements in the fields of physics, for me personally his biggest achievement was making a grand, full life despite the terrible misfortune of being diagnosed with ALS. It would have been easy to become a recluse, embittered with the hand he’d been dealt, a brilliant misanthrope. But this was a man who maintained his sense of humor and refused to be mentally beaten. Three years ago, he told One Direction fans that the theory of alternate universes could provide a reality where Zayn Malik was still in the band. He conducted an interview with John Oliver where his factual, deadpan delivery was funnier than his interviewer, managing the cheekiest grins as he did so. And let us not forget that Stephen Hawking is the only person to have ever portrayed themselves in a Star Trek episode (Next Generation, “Descent, Part 1″), where he appeared alongside actors portraying Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton, whom he proceeded to defeat in poker.

Hawking’s observations on black hole radiation, string theory, alternate universes and artificial intelligence are things that will probably forever remain beyond most of us. But we could all learn a thing or two from his humanity.

I think letting this blog go inactive is the best ending. Because having this blog has taught me that I love John regardless and it will forever stand as something promoting diverse head canons without being mean to those who disagree.
