Fifty Shades of Alien Plants

Because of a combination of sunlight, the atmosphere and other terrestrial happenstance, the plants here on Earth are typically green.

A study out of Cornell and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy is exploring the possibilities that this isn’t a universal truth. Is it possible that plants on a planet with a star that emits 1/10 the energy of the Sun has black plants? These plants might need to find ways to compensate for the smaller energy source and by evolving a black hue, they’d be able to absorb all optical wavelengths of energy.

Just as the green of forests cover much of the Earth, could it be possible for us to detect the tint of an alien organism covering another planet even if it’s not green?

We don’t fundamentally know why chlorophyll evolved to reflect green light but it would be narrow-minded to ignore the diverse potential of life by assuming extraterrestrial plants (or something similar) would be green.
