Mom: “They’re cute. I’d put them in a boat.”
Me: “What?”
Mom: “Isn’t that what it’s called? When you think people would be good together? They’re on a boat?”
Sister: “You mean you ship them?”
Mom: “Is that it? I knew it had something to do with boats. I ship them.”

what I actually mean when I send the kissy face emoji
Being a good person is a choice. Don’t let people fool you into believing that truly good people never have bad thoughts, are never tempted by the easier path, by the low road, never mess up or act out selfishly. Never believe a person can be good without making a conscious effort.
Every single time you do something good, you’ve made a decision to make the world a little brighter.
Goodness is not an inherent trait, it is a choice. Keep making it! I see you, I’m proud of you, and I’m rooting for you!
Do you have any advice for someone who is 16?
Watch Star Trek.
I’m sorry anon. I realized belatedly that I basically just told you “turn to Jesus!” and walked away without explanation. I’m absolutely not kidding, though: Star Trek. Especially in times of difficulty and change: watch Star Trek.
I was sixteen in the 90s, which was a much more hopeful time than now in most ways, but was also a far more isolating time for anyone atypical. I had no idea where to go to get information about what was wrong with me, or reassurance that I wasn’t alone. Without the internet, alone is pretty damn lonely.
So I found myself turning to Star Trek captains to hear the messages I knew I needed to hear from an authority figure, but couldn’t find around me. Anon, I don’t know your situation or whether you’re among my Trek followers, so let me offer you a variety of options:

Agree. Also, Trek is such a lovely vision of a hopeful future. In their timeline, right now we're still supposed to be dealing with the aftermath of the Eugenics wars and meeting Vulcans (don't quote me on exact timeline because I'm too lazy to doublecheck myself atm). Humanity nearly destroyed itself but moved from that to erradication of war and poverty, and that's hope for a future I know I need to see at this current point in time.
technology related sensory memories from my childhood
sliding the metal cover on floppy disks
the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo
The heaviness and rubber texture of the roller ball in a computer mouse, and the little ring of lint
Unkinking the curly cord of a telephone while you talked
The -peww sound and slowly fading image of a crt monitor turning off, and then running your finger through the static on the dusty glass
The crunch of opening or closing a plastic Disney vhs cover
The sound effects in kidpix
Extending and collapsing metal antennas and using them as magic wands
…God, it is so weird these things aren’t around any more. Cause it’s true, the sensations are so distinct. It’s bizarre to think about missing these tiny relics.
The feel of cassette tape tape on your skin as you used a pencil or similar to wind it back up when it had gotten caught in the tape player.
The smell of 35mm film canisters. (also the jangle that coins made in them, anyone else use them as a sort of purse? Or was that just Granddad and I?)
The sound of dial-up. (I do not miss getting disconnected every time the phone rang…)

I blame the song “Princesa” from the Soy Luna soundtrack for making me draw Marichat.
“Ya no soy yo, es el amor Y siento que estoy despertando No sé quién soy Ni a dónde voy Aunque pensé que estaba claro
No quiero sentirme un cobarde Sólo espero, no sea tarde Para seguir el corazón”
