not every mutual fits neatly into an archetypal medievalism but there are some mutuals that im like yeah addressing you as “my liege” would come strangely naturally
LOVE failed chosen ones. Chosen ones who failed and chosen ones who aren’t special and never were and chosen ones by chance and chosen ones by a choice not their own and chosen ones who succeeded at what cost
Cannot imagine Rocky's thoughts about Stratt if he was told the full story. There's a lot of opinions about this going around, and I get the "Rocky would just hate her" theory, but it's so much more complicated. Like Grace's own opinion.
There's this woman who was doing everything imaginable to save her species, her planet. Your friend worked for her, trusted her, cared about her. You love your friend, and he's the first sentient being you have met in decades, half a century. He's the reason your world is saved and you can go back home. He's the reason you're alive and gave you hope. His mission was supposed to end in death, by design, but you saved him. He uses that gift to save you instead. Save your planet. There's a woman who did awful things for the sake of the world knowing she would pay the price. She (thought she) killed your friend. But he's not dead! But she couldn't know. The woman sent you a saviour, a gift from the sky beyond your perception. She betrayed your friend. She's the reason you can go home. She hurt him and made him scared scared scared. She saved her world, gave you your best friend. She took his memories (eridiana don't forget. Can't. Amnesia must be a horror story) and autonomy. She is the reason no other crew will die, because now you know the dangers of space.
I don't think Rocky hates Stratt, but I'm not sure he would like her either. Respect for doing what had to be done, anger for following through with it.
Grace mentioning to Rocky that he used to watch his ship every evening after they parted ways (and do complex math to figure out when he's going to lose sight of it completely). Grace is. a little bit embarrassed about the whole thing.
Rocky is ecstatic.
"Grace watched Rocky sleep, question? Even though we were apart??"
Okay wait, I know that there are only so many stars specifically within plausible visiting distance (on a human lifespan) that we also think could have habitable exoplanets to namedrop in sci-fi, but was anyone going to tell me that Erid supposedly orbits the exact same star as Vulcan or was I supposed to read that in the "In Fiction" tab of the Wikipedia page for the 40 Eridani system myself.
i just know grace and rocky are going to be linguistically unsalvageable after so long alone together in such a high stress environment.
the mixing of eridian and human languages (and not just english! even english speakers use phrases from other languages! youre telling me grace isnt c'est la vie-ing this entire goddamn trip?) and idioms and body language and various non-word sounds is going to be a sonic nightmare for humans and eridians alike.
in the short window of the story they've already morphed several, now multiply that across the entire trip!
i keep thinking about rocky picking up gesticulation from grace, but on erid it's the equivalent of a human talking with a hand in front of their mouth.
and i shudder to imagine all the scientific short hands they come up with to speed up research! hey rocky thanks for solving the astrophage problem too bad no one knows what the fuck you're trying to explain to us!
This isn't for any particular prompt for @lotro-week, but quite honestly I'm just glad I got it presentable in time for this week <3
I have for a bit now been working on a Runekeeper class for D&D 5e. I had one iteration that was largely a prismari wizard with some reflavored spells specifically for a lightning runekeeper, but this one is a full class with three specs and a bunch of spells. There will definitely be future versions of this as, among other things, I need to write more spells and also ah. playtest it. At all. That said, I wanted to share the current version for LOTRO week so! Here we are! The rest of the pages + commentary under the cut (pdf version here):
I used Homebrewery for the template, which really worked quite well! (It does support images, I just didn't add any). If you know the runekeeper text from LOTRO character creation and/or some of the class quests, I imagine a bit of the flavor text will look quite familiar lol. I also borrowed prismari features for second and sixth level abilities and several of the spells are just reflavored standard D&D spells to change damage type and/or add attunement.
I intend to add a number of additional spells, eventually, especially for the higher levels, but as it stands now I've got most of the runekeeper skills in here.
(Also for the record, I haven't had the opportunity to test this at all, but if anyone does try them out and/or have some input I'd be very interested to hear about it)
I had other things I was going to ramble about... ah! This version is an intelligence caster. You can very easily argue wisdom or charisma too- it's scholarly study, it's observation and understanding, it's arguments spoken in words of power. Intelligence is imo closest to how I write my runekeeper (and also this whole project started life as a modified wizard so. there's that too lol), but it doesn't change much if you wanna play yours wisdom or charisma. Also there are so many charisma casters already.
One of the things I'd be very curious about in real play is how the concentration spells ~ heal/damage over time skills translate. Lightning rk is easy- it's just ten different versions of Hits You With Lightning. HoTs/DoTs aren't a huge thing in D&D (much easier to let the game engine keep track of them lmao).
Final Word, or, the Casters Hate You Now ability, is a full action bc they have to make the concentration check against your spell DC, which is likely to be rather high.
Even the healer spec is locked out of any resurrection spell more powerful than revivify for LOTR reasons. Part of the balancing here is the extensive HoT abilities (including a healing cantrip) & shields, but also the short range on those abilities. Your blue rk may have to heal-tank a little bit. It's fun it'll be fine :3
Spells known/slots modeled off sorcerer. RK has a very narrow range of abilities here but damn are they good at [hits you with lightning] [hits you with lightning] [hits you with lightning].
I think that's most of the commentary I had in mind atm. I am prepared to immediately notice seventeen more typos I missed on all my edit passes. Happy runekeeper time
