Collins is gone.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.

Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.

All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.

After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.

It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.

And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.

The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.

Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.

ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.

Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.

Reccer says: this fic devastated me in the best possible way. such a beautifully written exploration on grief and the ways it fucks you up. gorgeous gorgeous.

Instead of being shot by a sniper that day, Eddie vanishes from thin air—along with 25% of Earth's population. Five years later, he and everyone else reappear. Eddie finds himself suddenly in the middle of a world he doesn't recognize, where the people he loves most have changed significantly. 

Reccer says: I've read over a hundred of Cal's works and I have to say, this one is my favorite. It is so heart-wrenching and visceral. So delightful and enlightening. As always, expert prose. I get emotional just thinking about it. An absolute must-read!! 💕

the one where everything in canon is the same, except eddie diaz is secretly a bestselling romance author, and nobody knows. Yet. 

Reccer says: genuinely love everything about this fic, it could be silly with a premise like that but instead it's incredibly heartfelt and just. works.

Reccer says: Audio porn is a form you seldom encounter in fics, and it was fun to have Eddie being obsessed with Buck's voice and the way he talks in bed before they even meet!

This prompts him to think more about his relationship with Taylor. 

Reccer says: Absolutely fantastic what-if scenarios of Buck meeting Eddie at different points in his life, finding he can be what Eddie needs even when they're strangers and making him consider the places they keep in each other's lives.

In the weeks after meeting each other Buck and Eddie fell in love, got together, broke up, and forgot to fall out of love. When Eddie kisses Buck's hair right as he's loaded out of the ambulance after getting hurt, it all comes crashing back for Buck, and he doesn't know if he can try to forget it all again.

Buck struggles with his jealousy over Ana and lets Maddie set him up on a date with a guy, which to his surprise goes really well, but only complicates his feelings. Meanwhile Christopher engages in some parent trapping and Eddie keeps looking at Buck like he's waiting for him to say something specific. 

Reccer says: Wonderful post-S4 story of Buck trying to figure out how to move on from his feelings while Christopher is doing his best to pull Buck back in. While the fic is Buck POV, both Buck and Eddie struggle with jealousy over the other's partner and pining for each other.

King Alfred the Great’s lost remains 'found under car park', TV show researchers say

The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.

Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”

Reccer says: incredible teenage chris fic, captures all the angst and anger of being a teen in his situation, and the dynamic with both eddie and buck is pitch perfect.

Where they're hosting the first party of the school year, and two truths/one lie is too easy a game for the Buckley-Diazes.

Are you injured anywhere else? There is a conversation he wants to have - If I leave you here I don’t know that you’ll be alive when I get back. There are protocols, in disaster situations. If you can only save one person, you save the one most likely to survive. Beyond protocol, you always fucking save the kid. Beyond that, it's our kid. It’s our fucking kid, it’s Christopher, and I am going to get him to the surface and in doing so I am going to leave you for dead. But it’s Buck, and they never really needed words to talk, and Buck is still looking at him, and Eddie knows what he'd say. He'd downplay the injury. He knows the protocol. And he’d already said it, damned him out loud, he’s going to take you back up top and then come back for me.

Reccer says: This really grapples with ableism, religion, and trauma. On what it means to let someone else make choices in how to raise your child, especially if you realise too late that you disagree with the choices they make. It's aching and carefully written and painful and truly beautiful

Chris wants his dad. He wants his bed. But he can't have those yet, and he and Dad never really text because if Dad’s not working they’re usually together or one of them is too busy to text, so texting Dad feels weird, but Buck… He can text Buck.

A moment’s hesitation. Is it dishonoring Shannon to ignore this shade? Or is it dishonoring her to go talk to it, to her? The woman gives a sly grin that Eddie saw a hundred thousand times on Shannon’s face, and as she looks up, she makes direct eye contact with Eddie, and it softens into a different smile, into an expression he never thought he’d see again.  This has to be a sign from the gods. Eddie might not like to call on them, not if he can help it, was always taught it’s safer to escape their notice, but he knows better than to ignore their direct wishes. History is littered with examples of exactly why that’s dangerous, the knock on effects of hubris are myriad and world-changing. It doesn’t matter whether he wants to approach this woman, he has to.  “Hey, I’m going to hit the head, I’ll be right back,” he says, getting up from the table, and Chris and Marisol wave him off easily, chattering away.  He circles, just a little, walking up past the bathrooms, wending his way closer and closer to her shop. Throughout, as she talks to customers, she throws glances his way. It’s like she can’t help herself, finding him like it’s fated. Eddie feels outside his own body, like he’s in story, a myth of old.  It’s rare for the gods to bring people back from the dead, and he didn’t make the journey to the underworld himself, and besides, he can see she’s not Shannon. She’s just also not not Shannon.

He’s been woken up by pain before, though it’s been years now. You don’t forget what that feels like though. Pain so sharp it dulls again, a throbbing ache that makes up the backbone of your world. He lies there, panting through it, aching waves of pain that wash over him in rhythm.  It takes a little too long to realize an alarm is blaring as well. The pain sharpens in waves because there’s a loud noise screaming at him in those moments. It all seems very urgent for a guy who was sure he wasn’t waking up ever again.  He’s up and moving before he even realizes it, the nature of their training so drummed into them. You hear alarm, you start moving. It’s infinitely easier to fall back on training, to practically let autopilot take over, and focus on the realities of what this all means later.

As he approaches the pew with the 118 sitting in it, he can hear the susurrus of whispers around the room, and then clearer than any of the others by virtue of who’s talking, “So that’s him?” “Yeah, Adriana,” says Eddie. “That’s him.” “He seems sweet,” says Adriana. “He can hear you,” says Eddie pointedly, and Buck has to stifle a little laugh.  “I’m not complaining,” he mutters, as he takes a seat between Maddie and Bobby.  “I’m sure,” says Eddie dryly, and in the same moment Bobby asks, “What was that?” so Buck has to focus up. “Oh, nothing, just talking to myself,” says Buck airily. “How are you doing?” Bobby looks like he’s aged years in the few days since the hit and run.

Buck pauses, hyper aware that they have a much larger audience than Maddie could know. It can’t hurt to remind everyone here that he’s on good terms with the head of their pack. “Yeah,” he says after a moment. “We met after she broke her leg, she cooks the best enchiladas I’ve ever had.” As they get closer to the front, and he sees how incredibly stiff looks up ahead, he adds, “She loves Eddie and Chris more than anything.” Up ahead, he sees Eddie soften just a little at the reminder.  “I’m glad,” says Maddie, “And it’s nice to see so many of his family flew out for this as well.” “Yeah,” says Buck, tries to be as neutral as he can be. “They’re a close family, for all that they’re across multiple states.” A beat of silence, and Buck thinks for a brief moment about the difference between the Diaz pack and his own. Between the fact that the Diazes might not have approved of Shannon in a variety of ways, but so many of them are here to show their love and support for Eddie and Chris despite that. Between the unshakeable fact that his own pack can only really rely on the people in this room, and Athena Grant, who was working today. The 118 has almost inadvertently collected people who don’t really have anywhere else to turn, who don’t have a strong support system. They’re a close knit group, and there’s a reason for that.

“Evancito,” says Isabel, from just inside the entrance, “It is good to see you.” She pulls him close, drops a kiss on each cheek, and Buck can feel his own shoulders relaxing. “Thank you for coming,” she says, earnest, as she holds him by each shoulder.  “Nowhere else I’d want to be,” says Buck earnestly. “Here, let me introduce you to my sister, Maddie, and our coworkers, Chimney, Hen, her wife Karen, and our Captain, Bobby.”  “It’s a pleasure to meet you all,” says Isabel, “Eddie is up at the front with Christopher, I’m sure he’ll be glad to see you all.”  “She seems nice,” says Maddie in an undertone as they walk up the aisle towards Eddie and Chris.  “Isabel?” asks Buck, “Oh yeah, she’s the best.”  “Didn’t realize you knew his grandmother so well,” says Maddie thoughtfully.
