Jesper losing the one person who saw him as blessed and falling in love with a boy who sees him as even more than that. Wylan seeing magic in every mundane thing, and falling in love with a boy with magic in his veins. Nina growing up knowing she would always be targeted and falling in love with a boy who vows to protect her. Matthias losing his love for the world as a child and falling in love with a girl who loves even the simplest of pleasures.

when each crow’s life went off the rails: an ordered list

kaz: when he was 9. depending on how you see it, it either happened when his dad died and jordie and he moved to ketterdam or when jordie died. in my opinion, it was jordie’s death

inej: when she was 14. when she was kidnapped by slavers, taken to ketterdam, the menagerie happened, etc etc

jesper: it’s debatable. it could have been when he was 7, when his mom died - the beginning of the end, if you will - or when he moved to ketterdam at 15 for university

nina: when she was 16. being captured by the drüskelle was the catalyst, and matthias’ imprisonment furthered the descent, but the ice court heist when she was 17 really kicked off her criminal fuckery

matthias: when he was 17. the shipwreck flipped his whole worldview upside down and had him questioning everything, and it only got worse from there

wylan: when he was 8. van eck finding out wylan couldn’t read caused the whole marya thing and that’s when the abuse started
