Where I live squirrels are mostly in the city parks, except it's a pretty touristy place, so they see people every day at every hour (mostly drug deals at night but still).

The squirrels. Fear. Nothing.

They come by looking all cute, let you pet them and then pretend food. If you don't give some to them sometimes they just take it

Once my toast was stolen by a little crittery fucker and I am never going to forgive him for it (we named it Maurice because of the inherent humiliation of it and because he looks like the Maurice from the Madagascar movie (?))

Then I saw another squirrel attack both a dog that was possibly ten times its size and in another occasion a pigeon named Billy (long story)

I fear them and I respect them

One correction:

The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".

In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinion™️ is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.

it's all very well to say "friends are just as important as romantic partners" but in practice this simply is not the case lmao. you can share a flat with a friend but it's expected that sooner or later that friend will meet someone and will move out to go live with that person instead. if you're hanging out with friends you can bring your partner along but your friends can't come on a date night with you because that's third-wheeling and it's weird. you can know somebody for most of your life and still be second-best to some guy they met on tinder 6 months ago. you're meant to just accept without question the fact that your friends will prioritise time with their partners over time with you. being single is treated like a problem that needs to be fixed. we casually use expressions like "just friends" or "more than friends". everything we read and watch reinforces the idea that romantic love is what gives life meaning and therefore your life is meaningless without it. i try to keep my chin up but my god it is bleak out there
