Spoilers for the Pixar film Luca.
I think my favorite part of the film was the relationship between Massimo and Alberto.
When Alberto was first talking about his Dad, and Luca was telling him how lucky he was that his Dad let him do whatever he wanted. Alberto's reaction was pretty telling that there was more too it then he was letting on.
And I think one of if not the saddest part of the film is when Alberto admitted that his dad didn't come and go, he abandoned Alberto because he didn't want the responsibly of being a parent anymore.
Massimo came into Alberto's life when he really needed a parent. He was starting to think that everyone was better off without him. That all he could do was ruin things for everyone else.
Massimo didn't care if the boys were a little weird. He warmed up to them very quickly. He didn't mind explaining what happened to his arm or just taking Alberto on the boat and letting Luca help Gulia. When he heard that Alberto had run away he didn't hesitate to go out and look for him. Even when Luca said he probably wouldn't want anyone to find him. He went out anyway just in case.
As soon as he was introduced he told the boys he believed in sea monsters. He was with the rest of the town at the end, ready to attack them. But as soon as he realized that it was the boys, he didn't hesitate to defend them. Even when some of the others acted like they were going to attack them anyway. He got behind the kids and gave them a look that said "Don't even think about it." He even stayed with them until they all left.
And Massimo didn't have to offer to let Alberto live with him. He could have sent him to school with Luca and Gulia. Or he could have convinced Luca's family to take him. But I think it shows how much Massimo loves and cares about him. Especially when you watch the end credits and saw them spend a lot of time together. (Making Pizza, celebrating Alberto's birthday, hanging out with Luca's family etc.) I liked that the end credits implied that Massimo adopted him or is at least a foster parent to him. Alberto helped Luca with his dreams. But Luca helped Alberto "get off the island" and find a family that really loves and cares about him.
disney: *puts out a movie about sea monsters that EXTREMELY queer coded during pride month, but in a way that makes sure they won’t lose any profit for it being openly queer*
disney:
Visual Representation of me, a grown man, watching Luca (2021), after I specifically promised myself not to cry over yet another children's film.
Those two old ladies who are actually sea creatures live together with a bunch of cats? Oh yeah they’re lesbians.
