I was already devastated about Satrapi’s passing— Persepolis was one of the first comics I ever read, one of the first novels that taught me what a comic even is, and my mother’s first gift to me when I decided I wanted to study art— but to hear that she passed from sadness? From grief?
hi ito! hmmm... it might be strange asking you stuff like this but i was just curious to know if in greece you have to go through an undergrad program before some niche professional degree (heard mostly happening for medical as kids have to go through pre med preparation in undergrad before applying for medical school especially in america and canada) is this true there as well ? y'know for other niche professional degrees too and not just medical ? (i was just curious as i come from india and we just give national exams for most professional degree in high school years until and unless its an master's degree) just curious, it might not even relate to you in the slightest lol but i just felt like asking so feel free to ignore this if you want !
So yes, but also no, not exactly/really/technically.
The process starts with you choosing a general orientation of studies early in highschool (age~16), like stem, economics, med-adjecent, or humanities and then you take a huge exam on the subjects of your orientation only, and have to then choose a university that abides to your orientation. For example, a stem student cannot apply to med school because biology is not included in their orientation subjects, or a humanities student cannot apply to architecture because they haven’t studied math.
Then, if you get in, that’s it. It’s all called “university” and not separated in undergrad, post grad, and sometimes it also includes a masters in your program that you applied for at 18, in your freshman year.
I’m not explaining this very aptly, but think of it as us not having Bachelors degrees. The minimum time you can spend at a greek university is four years for a regular degree, and then for stuff like med school and engineering, it’s five or six years, and your one degree you get once you finish is both undergrad, grad and sometimes even a masters (in some cases like in biomedicine for example. My biomed friends finished their 5 year schooling this year and are eligible to apply for doctorate right away because their final year of what we call a “basic” degree also doubles as a masters.)
So no, no undergrad programs for anybody really, just one huge program depending on your degree, and it can dabble as a masters sometimes, even if you’re out of stem (like for some reason Russian philosophy here is 5 years of uni)
Hope that was explanatory enough :D
It does indeed not affect me at all because i went to a private university however! I did have my orientation exams as normally though
I reread “everything is romantic” in honour of pride month kicking in, just to once again confirm to myself that I am ace and I did write all that, and it wasn’t a product of mass hallucination, and it indeed does slap
not sure if ive already sent an anon telling you this but your bsd works are like... ingrained into my brain. particularly the way you write fyodor. oh my days they're amazing!! thank you for writing and sharing them<3
it's always a treat to see people still liking my bsd stuff :))
Writing these characters now feels like taking an old toy out of a dusty box, trying to remember how to play with it, and I'm not sure I know how, anymore.
But it still reminds me of good times so !! thank you !!
So I'm still in the process of editing csoaw, right? and im on chapter 7? the one we get fyodor's pov in the apartment, with the virtual assistant....which he calls an AI....and he mentions he and nikolai have very different views in AI ethics, in those exact words.....
I wrote this shit in 2022, but now im wondering if csoaw fyodor would canonically-not-so-canonically be pro AI.
main trio is done gang, 3 hours before June hits too, I've never been this early for anything in my life
it's crazy how in the Bitter Work episode, Aang's plotline resolves with a joyous moment of triumph and him learning to be more rooted and standing his ground--
and then it cuts straight to Zuko's PG13, divinely intervened self-harm attempts, where he's scream-crying at presumably God (who has never been alluded to or mentioned before or after that point again) to hit him with lightning.....?
Hi! For the ask game (after you are well of course) would be 20,56,58,85,87 and 94
oooo it's been some days since i posted that but let's go !
20. preferred place to write (i.e., in a note book, on your laptop, sketchpad, post-it notes, etc.)?
I usually write in my notes app but only for convinience, I much prefer to write on paper. After I moved apartments ive started writing more on post-its and sticking them on my wall
56. favorite tradition?
I'm really fond of the part in orthodox weddings when they exchange flower crowns. It's also the base of why you can refer to your spouse as "my crown" in a genderless way, which i think fucks hard
58. four talents you’re proud of having?
I perceive talents as a result of some pronounced biological traits that facilitate certain activities, not as just individual and specific gifts. Like if someone is born with an aptness for flexibility, they'd have a really good base to be a ballerina or a gymnast, get it? For me, based on what I've been told over the years, I think that's memory. I have a very sharp memory, and so that instantly makes me decent at a bunch of stuff with less effort than it would take an average person. Like language learning, card games, or navigation. And remembering birthdates?
85. fairy tales or mythology?
fairy tales, maybe. kind of ironic considering I'm standing on one of the most mythologically rich countries, but since mythology was taught to us at school at great length, i consider it more of history, and it has sucked some of the fun out of it.
87. your greatest fear?
That the conviction I have about "making it" as an artist in whatever medium I put my mind to, is actually less of a conviction and more of a delusion of grandeur, supported by a handful of small wins, and that my previous years of failure do not constitute for any interesting backdrop to my eventual success and are just that; years of utter failure with no payoff to my trying again and again
94. favorite season?
summer!
Last year on artfight so many more people drew Kiyan and Mercy rather than the Anahtar and while that personally makes me so happy, knowing that female characters are sidelined a lot in the event (at least in the past), it's also really funny, 'cause I think he'd be pissed the fuck off about not being more popular
I hope you find this even slightly funny.
oh god this is literally it
who of you recommended me Slay the Princess last year? this shit fucks harddddddd
I'm out
My brother and my partner put Netflix on my hospital room’s TV to watch Rick and Morty while I was coming off meth and drifting in and out of sleep, and I had the weirdest, slimiest, most lazer-gun-sound-filled, anesthesia-induced nightmares
10/10 would recommend
On this episode of ito is actually a 90 year old man of victorian durability— pneumonia!
hi ito, any unconventional tips for learning a new language? aside from speaking w native speakers (cause sometimes its a little hard to find people to talk to)
I do !
1- set your phone settings in the language you want to learn. Chances are you remember most of your phone’s general button names by heart like “back” “enter” “send” “delete” so you press them by muscle memory but now you’re seeing them constantly in another language and it’s lowkey helping you learn basic commands subliminally
2- foreign youtube! Look up if there’s any youtubers that are native to the language you want to learn and look if they have some generic reaction video to a movie or a game you already have watched/played. That way you can just focus on the YouTuber’s words that are 90% conversational annnd really enunciated as with all content creators
3- foreign movie with the same language subtitles. You might not grasp just about 50% of the plot but hearing natives speak while also having a transcribe of what they are saying in the same language helps a lot
4- similarly, foreign dub of an animated movie you’re familiar with. It might sound absolutely shit if it’s some obscure language but you’ll get a good laugh about it. Disney movies especially used to get dubbed to the moon and back
5- foreign music! There’s got to be even one song you’re very into and you’ll learn the lyrics subconsciously if you listen to it enough
Generally, the more you can overexpose yourself to the language outside of learning spaces, the better! Also the variety of accents and tone of voice and enunciation you get from actors and youtubers and singers, much closer resembles how a regular person would talk, rather than the Listening exercises you’d get in an app or a class.
I remember spending 5+ years learning french in a class and then not being able to understand 3 words from a Parisian’s mouth , so don’t be me
im going to be really brave right now okay
And by the way, I'm starting preparations for artfight this week (and generally working more on my original stuff) and you can see more of my blorbs here: @hyachrome
