Jax’s Abstraction 💫

(explanation of process and the separate artworks below!)

This was fun and experimental. I feel like I found a sweet spot between figurative and abstract (heh… get it) art. I like how the negative space and positive space blend together. To do this, I returned to a technique I learned in undergrad.

This process involves drawing in oil pastel on watercolor paper. After drawing, you then soak the paper entirely in water. While the page is wet, drip black ink onto a few spots and wiggle the paper around. This helps direct the ink to where you want, but it will really travel wherever it wants as long as there is water to guide it. Water and oil do not mix, so naturally the ink avoids where you drew. Isn’t that neat?

I think the method suits the theme of abstraction. The black ink is all consuming, chaotic, and the artist has very, very little control over where it spreads. I highly recommend it for recovering perfectionists 🙂‍↕️
