In which I ramble semi-coherently on why we crave medieval novels, tv shows, and movies in the modern age.

Game of Thrones. Braveheart. The Last Kingdom. Pillars of the Earth. Endless iterations of Robin Hood. Vikings. The Serpent Queen. BBC’s Merlin, not to mention countless other riffs on Arthurian legend. No matter how many of these stories emerge from our collective consciousness, we crave more, more, more.

The appeal of historical fiction as a genre is easy to understand. It allows us a safe window into our collective memory—access to the intrigue and high stakes of the past, without having to survive all the pesky smallpox, syphilis, and brutal social and economic inequities. Even within the context of historical fiction’s general popularity, though, our obsession with medieval stories stands out. With all the violence and flagrant oppression of everyone who wasn’t in the wealthy ruling classes, you’d think modern readers and tv viewers (with all our accompanying noble and evolved sensibilities) would want to leave the ‘dark ages’ cast onto the trash heap of history. Yet ratings and books sales stats don’t lie: no other historical period has inspired so many bestselling fictional depictions and retellings (except perhaps the British Regency era, though I’d argue it’s not as widely popular outside of its niche in romance.)

So what is it about the thousand-odd years between the 5th and 15th centuries that keeps drawing our imaginations obsessively back again and again? As both an unabashed fan and writer of the medieval subgenre of historical fiction, I have some theories, which I’ll attempt to untangle in this series of…essays? Articles? Semi-coherent ramblings on a question no one asked? No matter what you call it, the answer, I think, has more to do with our modern lived reality than romanticizing of the past.
